RELEVANT DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION (such as population or principal industries and institutions):
Thurston County, Washington, is located at the southern end of Puget Sound in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Majestic Mount Rainier and the rugged Cascade Mountains are nearby to the east, while the Pacific Coast is just an hour's drive to the west. Thurston County is 60 miles south of Seattle and 100 miles north of Portland, Oregon. Thurston County, one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Washington since the 1960’s, has consistently exceeded the state’s overall rate of growth. Between 2000 and 2009, it had a 2.1 percent growth rate. As of 2009, Thurston County has grown to a population of approximately 249,800 people.
The population growth experienced throughout the county has little to do with increased rates of birth. Instead, the majority of population increase has been due to the migration of people into the county. This continued migration is the result of Thurston County's stable economy and exceptional quality of life. The low-cost living, award-winning education choices combined with the area’s competitive cost of doing business, create an outstanding environment for businesses and residents to work, play and live.
Although Gateway Rotary will draw membership from throughout Thurston County, it will focus its identity on the Gateway Development. Located on I5 north of Lacey, Gateway is a 400-acre development including retail blocks centered around a public plaza, with offices and housing on the second and upper floors.  In addition, a 270-room hotel is planned for construction as part of the Phase One development. Offices, professional and medical, will be included. Later phases will have an office park. The anchor business in the Gateway area is Cabelas’ flagship store. The 185,000 square foot, $40 million store employ’s approximately 350 people and generates approximately $7 million in state and local tax annually. At full build-out, Thurston County expects the 400-acre Gateway project to yield $57 million in state and local tax revenue annually and create 8,000 new jobs.
New Generations.  With the recent addition of the New Generations avenue of service, the well-documented community problems of child homelessness and hunger, and the associated social burden and impact, Gateway Rotary will focus on addressing the real challenges facing the youth of Thurston County.
Gateway Rotary will provide:
·         A gateway for younger business professionals to become Rotarians
·         A gateway for young Rotarians to assume club leadership
·         A gateway for minorities to help Rotary diversify its membership
·         A gateway for Thurston County youth to have a better life
·         A gateway for businesses within the Gateway Development to participate in Rotary.
