As part of our partnership, Community Youth Services (CYS) and New Market’s YouthBuild (YB) agreed to provide opportunities for Rotary volunteers from the three clubs to work alongside CYS/YB students to help build their technical skills, life skills, and self-esteem. Below are the details for volunteering:
When will volunteers be needed?
- Volunteers will be needed November through February.
- YouthBuild will provide two volunteer shifts per day
- Shift 1 occurs between 8:00 to 10:00 (one volunteer needed)
- Shift 2 occurs 11:00 to 1:30 (one volunteer needed)
- Shifts are needed Monday through Thursday
- A Volunteer may do both shifts in one day and join YouthBuild staff for lunch at nearby Meconi’s
What would volunteers be doing?
- Volunteers will be working side by side with students
- Volunteers will be present and interacting with students
What skills should volunteers have?
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Willing to interact with students
- Serve as a positive role model
- Basic carpentry skills – helpful, but not necessary
What will the volunteers need?
- All volunteers need to submit and pass the Tumwater School District volunteer application and background check. Go to this website to complete the application process AND allow two weeks for the district to process the application and background check.
- Closed toed shoes
- Long pants
- Short sleeved shirts – preferred, but not necessary
Where will the volunteer activities occur?
- At the New Market Skills Center in Tumwater
What are the significant tiny house building activities?
- The team will be building four tiny houses at the same time.
- The sequence of construction is essentially: framing, flooring, insulation, roofing, painting, trim
Do volunteers need to bring their own tools or equipment?
- No – all equipment and materials are provided
What would volunteers be doing?
- Volunteers will be working side by side with students
- Be present and interact with students
Who are the students?
- Students will “try out” for the program to ensure good fit with the program in September
- All students receive safety training in October
- A total of 30 students will be working with volunteers
- Students are between 16 and 20 years of age
