Rotarians Tour History Museum

Rotarians spent Spring Break on tour. Due to Midland College being closed for Spring Break, the club decided it was time to take our meeting on the road and learn a little more about our city. Rotarian John Dzubinski lead a tour of the Midland County Historical Museum. The tour covered everything from the prehistoric "Midland Man" to the World War II era. Did you know that Midland was once known for our grass? Sheep and cattle ranchers saw Midland as the perfect opportunity to raise their herds. If you missed the tour, you can check out the museum on your own. It's located at the corner of Main Street and Texas Avenue. The volunteer-run museum is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm.

Rotarians Take Action on Mental Health Initiatives

Instead of our regular meeting on March 5th, Rotarians attended a workshop on "Caring for Youth Mental Health in the Permian Basin." It was a gathering of mental health professionals, religious leaders, and Rotarians for a great collaborative session. Our Rotarians walked away with tools we can put into action to improve access to mental health. Rotary International President R. Gordon R. McInally has challenged Rotarians to create hope in the world by championing mental health and wellness initiatives. For the past several years, the Rotary Club of Midland West has provided mental health grants to the Basin Dream Center to assist youth and young adults transitioning from foster care and homelessness. The workshop Rotarians attended today provides another resource to address and improve mental health in our community. If you are interested in taking further action, consider joining the Rotary Action Group on Mental Health Initiatives. You can learn more at www.ragonmentalhealth.org.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

Rotarians and Interact students from YWLA gathered at Midland Park Mall to help ring the bell for the annual Salvation Army red kettle campaign. Middle school students from the YWLA Interact Club helped kick off the event with caroling. The red kettle campaign started in 1891 in San Francisco by Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee. The funds were to be used to provide a free Christmas dinner for 1,000 destitute and poverty-stricken people of the Bay town. The campaign was successful and was eventually replicated across the United States. The red kettle campaign can now be found all over the globe in Europe, Asia, and South America. In the United States, the Salvation Army feeds more than 4.5 million people between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Rotarians Get Social at Summer Mummers

Summer Mummers is a Midland tradition 75 years in the making. Each summer, the Midland Community Theatre puts on a melodramatic production with the end goal of funding their many programs. For the attendees, it’s an opportunity to let loose and throw bags of popcorn at friends and strangers alike. This summer’s production “Rascality on the Rig” features Rotarian Gary Fulton as villain Lester Leasehold. 18 Rotarians and guests gathered together to take part in the revelry.

Rotarians Support the Community

The Rotary Club of Midland West presented a check in the amount of $3,000 to Christmas In Action. The organization was started in 1972 by Rotarian Bobby Trimble to repair homes of low-income elderly and disabled homeowners. Since its inception, Christmas in Action has repaired over 11,000 Midland homes with the help of volunteers. Christmas In Action has become an annual service project Midland West Rotary Club led by Jim Morris. Each April, Rotarians join forces with other volunteer groups to rehabilitate the home needing more significant repairs. The houses we take on are weeklong projects that often involve replacing shingles, siding, and windows. We are proud to support and continue the mission started as a simple way to help our neighbors.

What is a Rotary Fellowship?

Paul Harris founded Rotary in 1905 as a networking group with the goal of meeting other business professionals and developing lifelong friendships. Rotary’s service missions didn’t begin until years later. Over the last century, Rotary has grown in size to over 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. So how do Rotarians stay connected? Aside from networking at the club level, Rotary developed an enhanced membership experience through Rotary Fellowships. Rotary Fellowships are groups of Rotarians that share a common hobby, profession, or passion. Whether you’re an avid table tennis fan, have an interest in estate planning, or want to network with French speaking Rotarians, there is probably a Fellowship out there for you. Check out the Rotary Fellowships page to learn more!

Membership & New Club Development Month

Rotary International’s focus for August is Membership & New Club Development. With the strength of 1.4 million members, there is nothing that Rotary can’t do. Rotarians all around the globe are working together to solve some of the world’s biggest problems – fighting disease; providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene; saving mothers and children; supporting education; growing local economies; protecting the environment; and promoting peace. Members can join Rotary Action Groups that tackle problems on a larger scale than what local clubs are capable of. Not only do Rotarians improve the community – they improve themselves. Rotary offers a network for members to enhance their own skills and interests through Rotary Fellowships and the Rotary Learning Center. With Rotary, you can find your passion and do what you can’t.

Pink the Basin Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness; Resources

Roughly one in 1,000 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. Even though the diagnosis rate is significantly higher for women, Pink the Basin Executive Director Carolina Keith advises that everyone - men and women - regularly conduct self-exams to check for irregularities. Keith was the featured guest speaker at Midland West Rotary's July 11th meeting. She passed out Pink the Basin "shower cards" that detail how to properly perform breast exams. Early detection offers the best chance of survival. For those that have been diagnosed with breast cancer, Keith wants them to know they are not alone. Pink the Basin has support groups for current cancer patients and survivors. They also provide financial assistance for some diagnostic and treatment procedures. Pink the Basin works directly with local hospitals and clinics to reach patients in need.

Maternal and Child Health Month

Rotary International's theme for the month of July is Maternal and Child Health. An estimated 5.2 million children under age five died mostly from preventable and treatable causes in 2019, according to the WHO. Globally, preterm birth, birth asphyxia and trauma, and congenital anomalies, as well as infectious diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria, are the leading causes of these deaths. More than 80% of these deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa and central and southern Asia. The UN Sustainable Development Goals include specific targets for reducing the preventable deaths of newborns and children under age five by 2030. How can you take action? Develop or support programs that provide immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases for children under age five.

We will be start meeting Tuesdays at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1412 Illinois. 11:30AM to 1:00PM. Murrays will be catering the meals for the time being. They will be set up to start serving at 11:30. There is parking in the rear of the church on Ohio Street along with parking on the west side of the church on Illinois Street. We will continue to look and try other options but for now this is our best one.
If anyone would like to suggest something, feel free to contact one of the  Board members and we will research it.
Things to look for:
  • Room size big enough to hold 50 members and visitors comfortably.
  • Cost of the room
  • Cost of a meal if they serves food
  • Adequate parking and ease of access to the facility for all members
  • Is there a place to keep some of our set up materials (badge box, banners and stands, American Flag)

See you Tuesday.

New Lunch Format

Posted by Cindy Fisher on Aug 07, 2017
Last week's meeting room was not set up due to a mis-communication with Furrs.
As a result of this, we went through the regular line and many of you liked the idea. So Cindy and I met with the General Manager last Thursday and we agreed that we will try using the regular line for the next 2 weeks to see how it goes with getting everyone through.
We will  be starting our Meeting at 12:15 so that we can get everyone through. He said the crowd  doesn't start getting there till a little before noon, so if you show up by 11:30 to 11:45 we should be able to get everyone through the line before we start our meeting.
There will be no change in what we pay for our meals. We will still have tea, coffee, and water in our room for those who want re-fills.
Let's give this a try and see if we can make this happen.

Thanks
Cindy

Women in Rotary

The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.

"My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world," said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.

The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

The response to the decision was overwhelming: By June 1990, the number of female Rotarians had skyrocketed to over 20,000. By 2010, the number of women was approaching 200,000.

Rotary International Leadereship Institute

Posted by Mike Hunter

Harold Howard, Steven Palma, and President Elect Matt Vercher represented Midland West Rotary at the 2016 Rotary International Leadership Institute this past weekend.  The goal of the program is to create, develop, and deliver a leadership training model, uniquely Rotarian, that inspires and awakens greater passion for leading and serving through Rotary's avenues of service so that the Rotary motto "Service Above Self" comes alive in every Rotarian.

Planning for Foundation Month

Posted by Dianne Anderson on Oct 08, 2015

Dear District 5730 leaders,

November is Foundation month and I want to share some great resources to help you promote The Rotary Foundation to the family of Rotary!

Kickoff November by attending a Foundation Learning Webinar
Encourage club leaders to learn more about the Annual Fund, the great works the Foundation is doing, and why donors support the Annual Fund by attending the “Top Things You need to Know about Every Rotarian Every Year” webinar on 3 November from 10:00-11:00 am CST.

Promote Our Foundation on social media
Let's tell the world about The Rotary Foundation!
  • Download the Proud Donor image and use it as your Facebook, Twitter, or other social media profile photo during November.
  • Share your Rotary Story! Tell all your friends about the amazing work that Rotarians do all over the world! Add a link to share a story about how Rotary makes a difference or add a story that’s particularly inspiring for you.
  • Follow Rotary International on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – share stories that inspire you with your networks!
  • Encourage others to give by this “give” link: www.rotary.org/give.
  • Use videos from Rotary’s dedicated video page to share Rotary’s story and engage other Rotarians in the work of the Foundation. You could even dedicate a few minutes during each club meeting to showing a video!
Promote Rotary Direct and the Paul Harris Society
Encourage members to sign up for Rotary’s recurring giving program (Rotary Direct) – just select an amount and giving frequency online or use the Rotary Direct Form.  Members can also join the Paul Harris Society by completing the PHS Online Enrollment or filling out the PHS form. Learn more about contribution options by visiting Rotary.org.

Inspire others through storytelling and presentation
Gifts to The Rotary Foundation funds high impact, sustainable solutions to pressing needs around the world -- through projects directed by Rotarians. That means you and your fellow members are the best equipped ambassadors of the Foundation.
  • Tell the story of Rotary: follow this link for tips on great story telling about your philanthropy
  • Use this presentation to promote The Rotary Foundation in November.
  • Through Rotary Showcase, learn about service projects worldwide demonstrating Rotary’s global impact. Put your club’s projects on display and include photos and/or video to help share your service activity with the world.

Gear up for #GivingTuesday on 1 December
Celebrate the end of Foundation Month and the beginning of the holiday season on 1 December by participating in #GivingTuesday, a global movement to celebrate generosity and to give to the charities closest to your heart. Last year, Rotary clubs joined together to give over $100,000 to our Foundation on #GivingTuesday and this year we want to do even more! Look for more information from us as we get closer to the date, including details about how you and your clubs can participate in #GivingTuesday and help support the work of our Foundation.

Throughout November, I'll share weekly emails with tips, resources, and inspiring stories about Foundation-funded projects to support your efforts to help your clubs learn about and celebrate The Rotary Foundation. Share these stories with you clubs, especially those that aren't as engaged with The Rotary Foundation.

Thank you for all you do for Rotary.

Best wishes,

Christine

Rotary at the Rockhounds Social

Members of the Midland West Rotary Club and their family and friends gathered to enjoy a Rockhounds baseball game on July 23rd, 2015.  Those who attended were served hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn and drinks.  While most of the Rotarians were able to take in the game, those with children were able to enjoy other activities throughout the baseball park.  Young children could be seen playing basketball, riding the train, playing on the playground, and running around the splash pad.  It was a great evening and a nice opportunity to socialize with fellow Rotarians.

Exhange Student Recognized as Paul Harris Fellow

Exchange Student Daphne Burger of France gave a presentation at our June 9th meeting showing all of her many experiences during the year.  She was very appreciative of the opportunity given to her by the Rotary Youth Exchange program and the many people involved.  Following her presentation, Midland West Rotary President Andrew Mellen and Past-President Joe Campbell honored Daphne with her first Paul Harris Fellow recognition.  To be recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow, an individual must contribute $1,000, or have a contribution of that amount made in their name, to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.  The members of Midland West Rotary made a contribution in Daphne’s name for her accomplishments during her year as our in-bound exchange student.

Salvation Army Results

Posted by Ed Anderson
We raised more than $1,000.00 for the Salvation Army with our bell-ringing efforts on December 20.  The final count is not in, but the pot had $942 in bills, and about $100 in change.  The average take for the Salvation Army regulars is $200-$400.  More than anything else, we had a good time doing it.  Thanks to Wes, Gary, Andrew & Jackie & Natalie, Clayton, Roy, Cindy & Jack, Tim, Matt, Mark & Denise, Dianne & Ed, Caren, Eva, and Steve & Carolyn for being part of this project.

Crutches 4 Africa

The Crutches 4 Africa project is still active.  We have collected wheel chairs, crutches, walkers, walking boots, and other associated items.  Please continue to ask friends and relatives for donations.  Garage sales are a good place to find these items, and they are usually very cheap.  Bring collected items to Rotary, and hand them off to Michael Brown, Kathy Dunn, or Ed Anderson.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing Project

The Club has agreed to ring bells for the Salvation Army at Midland Park Mall on Saturday, December 20, 2014, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m.  We will ring bells during this time in one-hour shifts.   A sign-up sheet will be circulated at Tuesday's meeting.  You can sign up individually or as a group.  Have some fun with fellow Rotarians or with your family, support the Salvation Army and all it does for the less fortunate this Christmas, and earn a makeup.

Membership Update

Posted by Jeff Worley on Apr 28, 2014
The most recent update I have received is that the District was a plus 20 in membership as of the end of March.  This is a reversal of the downward trend of membership the past couple of years and we should all be proud!!

Spring means fundraising events for a lot of clubs and these events are a perfect time to ask prospective members to get involved.  A nice round of golf, or whatever your fundraising activity may be, can help form a relationship and get someone interested in joining your club.  Let's see if we can increase that plus 20 number even more and finish out the year on a high note!!

March D5730 Update

Posted by DG Ken Patterson on Mar 16, 2014
DID YOU KNOW?
  • Congratulations to the Monahans Rotary Club on their 75th Anniversary. The club was chartered on March 2, 1939 and became the 25th Rotary Club in then District 127.
  • Chris Atkinson Congratulations to Chris Atkinson for being named as Citizen of the Year by the Post Area Chamber of Commerce at the organization's recent Awards Banquet. Chris is currently serving as President of the Post Rotary Club and will be Area 6 Assistant Governor in the 2014-15 Rotary Year. Also honored was former Post Rotarian Kerry Dixon with the Distinguished Service Award.

Elyn and April Shamrock float Shamrock Rotarians April with Plaque shamrock fundraiser
  • Congratulations to the Shamrock Rotary Club on winning 2nd Place in the Non-Commercial Category at the St. Patrick's Day Parade. The parade had over 140 entries. In addition to the float, the club also had a successful fundraiser with their hamburger, hot dog and Frito Pie concession stand and a Chili Cook Off Event. All of these activities were in conjunction with the 68th Annual Official Texas St. Patrick's Day Celebration in Shamrock.
  • Could your Rotary Club use some help in determining any or all of these:
    • a clear set of goals?
    • a strong path of leadership?
    • a viable and effective direction of service in your community?

Your District has a gift for you and your club, and it's a gift that keeps on giving. Starting in August 2014, clubs can engage in the RI Vision Facilitation process, at no cost to your club other than the four hours your leadership and interested members will invest in a one-time gathering. This is a by-invitation-only gift and is in no way imposed or mandatory; your club leadership must request it. The Vision Facilitation process helps your club determine not only concrete goals over a three-year span, but also timelines, means, and accountability for achieving them.

In order to make this gift available, District Vision Facilitators are needed. Facilitators are committed Rotarians who will be trained in the Visioning process in a one-day workshop, and who will then be available to work in pairs in response to invitations from clubs. Training will be held in Lubbock on Saturday, July 12. (Facilitators don't serve in that capacity for their own clubs.) This is a great way to contribute to strengthening individual clubs in D5730 and thus the district itself. For more information about training as a District Vision Facilitator, please contact District Vision Facilitator Chair SarahLee Morris (sarahleemorris@hotmail.com; 806-441-1346; or message her on Facebook).
  • Unsung Hero Metropolitan Lubbock Rotary and Prosperity Bank recently co-hosted their 11th annual Unsung Heroes Award Recognition Ceremony. An EMS person, fireman, policeman, and sheriff deputy were honored as the 2014 Unsung Heroes of Lubbock for their sacrifice, dedication and willingness to risk their lives in making Lubbock a safer place to live. Each Honoree was selected by their peers in their respective organizations.

The idea of this event arose after the horrific event of 9/11/01
and the heroic actions of the First Responders in New York City.
The Unsung Heroes Award Ceremony provides all the citizens of
Lubbock an opportunity to express in a small way their thanks
and gratitude for the sacrifices that Lubbock's First
Responders exhibit each and every day.

The Midland Double Hitter - District Assembly and the Come
Celebrate the Foundation Banquet - is less than two weeks away .
Hope you making your plans to attend.

  • D5730 continues to show a positive number in regards to membership with a +22 to 1786 Rotarians from the July 1, 2013 number of 1764. Thanks to each and every one of you that hasinvited a friend toyour weeklyRotary Clubmeeting.
  • Big News! On 27 February, the world's leading Islamic scholars, led by the Grand Imam of the Holy Mosque of Mecca, stated that protection against diseases is obligatory and admissible under Islamic Shariah, and that any actions which do not support these preventive measures and cause harm to humanity are un-Islamic. The scholars adopted a strong 'Jeddah Declaration' and a focused six-month Plan of Action to address critical challenges facing polio eradication efforts in the few remaining polio-endemic parts of the Islamic world, includinga ban on vaccinations and lack of access to children in some areas, deadly attacks on health workers, and misconceptions by communities about mass vaccination campaigns.
  • The 2014 District Conference is May 2-3 in Lubbock at the Overton Hotel. Remember that the $2500 Come Fly with Rotary Gift Card will be given away on Saturday night so be sure and get your Raffle Stubs turned in.
  • Looking forward to seeing everyone in Midland on the 29th.

·         Tickets for the Come Fly with Rotary $2500 Southwest or United Airlines Gift Card Raffle are going out this week to all Rotarians in D5730.  Raffle Chair Susan Wierzba has announced that the clubs in the Small, Medium and Large Categories that sell the most tickets will win a Traveling Trophy that each club will keep for the next year.  The cost of the $2500 Gift Card is covered in the District Budget so that 100% of the money raised by the Raffle will go to the Annual Fund.  The drawing will be on Saturday evening, May 3rd at the District Conference.

·         Congratulations to Perryton Club President Jessica McCallie on the birth of her daughter Layla several weeks ago.  Jessica is already back leading her club.

·         Lone Star PETS is less than three weeks away.  If you are a President Elect for your club, then put PETS on your agenda for the March 7-9 weekend.  If your President Elect can’t make it, then consider having your President Nominee go in their place.  PETS has also developed a training program for President Nominees that is totally different than what a President Elect receives.  So if you are a PN and want to get an early start, then plan on attending this year’s PETS.  Currently four PNs from D5730 are signed up.

·          The roll out of the new District 5730 Website and Facebook Page designed to attract non Rotarians is just around the corner.  This effort is part of the Public Image Grant and will use an updated website and social media campaign that will be targeted to an external audience of young business professionals, both men and women,  2 4 years of age and older who rely on social media as their primary information resource. The goal of this effort will be to heighten the target audience’s awareness and understanding of Rotary activities within the local communities of the District, and thereby encourage new members and participation in the Rotary Clubs of District 5730. Success of these efforts will be measured by the number of new Rotarians signed up District-wide during the period of the campaign. ·          LATEST POLIO NEWS
·           Pakistan - 15 Polio cases have been reported in 2014 with the most recent on 1/31/14 in North Waziristan, FATA - 93 cases recorded in 2013.  The quality of immunization activities must improve in Peshawar for the country of Pakistan to be safe from Polio.

·         Surveillance, at the heart of India’s polio success story

Surveillance was the game-changer in the fight against polio. It marked a strategic shift in India’s polio eradication efforts.  “The setting up of a surveillance system proved to be the most important milestone in the journey of polio eradication in India as it formed the backbone of the eradication drive by helping identify areas and populations that were at risk and the type of poliovirus circulating in different areas besides measuring progress,” explains Dr Nata Menabde, WHO Representative to India.

Richard Dunham

Richard Dunham died last Thursday, February 13 in Houston at M.D. Anderson.

Richard was a much beloved member of the Rotary Club of Midland, and was a past president. He was generous to The Rotary Foundation, as well as many other charitable enterprises. While hospitalized at M.D. Anderson late last year, he pledged to match our club's donation to the "Pink" campaign for Breast Cancer awareness. His match put our club at $4,000.

D5730 Bylaw Amendment Final Proposals

Posted on Feb 09, 2014
Greetings Rotarians:

This email is a follow-up to the one that Webmaster Cesar sent out on January 31st concerning the Proposed Bylaw Changes that have been presented by several clubs.  Please refer to this email in the future for all of the updated information.   Proposals to change the Bylaws have come from the following clubs:

1.    Metropolitan Lubbock – Major changes that came out of the Bylaw Committee composed of Chair Ed Anderson – Midland West:  PDG Charles Cotten – Greater Odessa;  AG Steve Walthour - Dumas and myself.
2.    Levelland
3.    Sweetwater
4.    Greater Odessa
5.    Lubbock - Their motion is to Table all the proposed Bylaws until the 2015 District Conference.
A Round Table Discussion has been set for March 1st at the Holiday Inn Lubbock – Park Plaza, 3201 S. Loop 289, from 10 am – 12 pm, to answer any questions that your club might have concerning the changes that are listed below. & nbsp; This discussion will be a great time to offer suggestions and, hopefully, develop an agreement across the District on what is best for D5730.  DGE Dianne Anderson, DGN John Scott, DGND Susan Brints and I support these Bylaw Changes which have resulted from situations in our District where the Bylaws have limited how we are able to respond.  Bylaw Chair Ed Anderson and I will be present for the discussions.
If you plan to attend, please email,  d5730-dg.2013-14@sempai.org , or call me, 806-790-5175.  If you are not able to attend, but have questions or suggestions, please let me know prior to March 1st.
The Major D5730 Bylaw Changes involve the following Articles:
Article II Definitions
Greater Odessa – The following term be added to the definitions:  “Parliamentary Procedure” means the latest edition of Robert’s Rules of Order Revised shall be used for purposes of discussion and voting on any issue before the District Delegates at any called meeting including any discussion concerning amending the District Bylaws.

Article III Nominations Committee
Change the DG Nominating Committee to three Past Club Presidents and two PDGs from the current makeup of two Past Club Presidents and three PDGs.  In addition, the three Past Club Presidents would be elected at the District Conference and not appointed by the DG as is currently done.  The benefit with this change is that it would allow all the clubs in the District to have direct involvement in the selection of this very important position and ensure that this process is a bottom-up process,

Article VII Finance Committee
·          Expand the District Finance Committee from 3 members to 6 members,
·         Require that one of the members be a PDG,
·         Allow the Finance Committee to decide if Reserve Funds need to be spent (the Advisory Council currently is charged with this responsibility).
·         The selection of the chairperson has three separate proposals:

o   Levelland – Chair is one who is in his 3rd year on the FC and has been in Rotary the longest.
o   Metro - Allow the DG to appoint the chairperson he/she will be working with.
o   Sweetwater – Allow the FC members to select the chair of the FC
This change will allow additional training opportunities in district leadership positions and allow the Finance Committee to make all decisions regarding the D5730 finances.

 ·          Add the Financial Management Chairperson on the District Foundation Committee to the District 5730 Foundation bank account signature card.  Account will still require two signatures on all checks written .

Article VIII District Leadership Plan for Assistant Governors
Allow the DG to appoint as many Assistant Governors as the DG deems necessary.  Current limit is a maximum of 10.  The DG will still be required to stay within the Budgeted Amount for AGs that has been set by the clubs at the District Assembly.

Article XIII Method of Amendment of Bylaws
Change the club notification to 45 days from the current 90 days on any proposal to change the District Bylaws.

Thanks to the Bylaws Committee and all the clubs for submitting these Bylaw proposals.

India celebrates three years without polio

Posted by Dan Nixon on Jan 20, 2014

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011.

To mark this historic triumph -- reached after a decades-long battle against polio -- Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."

The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the .

The challenge now is to replicate India's success in neighboring Pakistan, one of three remaining polio-endemic countries, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria.

Rotary leaders in India are working with their Pakistani counterparts to share best practices and lessons learned during India's successful anti-polio campaign. Rotary was particularly effective in obtaining the support of influential religious leaders in India's Islamic communities. Pakistani Rotary leaders are playing a similar role to counter rumors and misinformation about polio vaccinations that keep some Muslim parents from immunizing their children.

Meanwhile, continue in both countries. During these large-scale drives, Rotary volunteers join health workers to vaccinate every child under age five against polio.

"We must now stop polio in Pakistan to both protect Pakistani children and to safeguard our success in India and other countries where we have beaten this terrible disease," says India PolioPlus Committee Chair Deepak Kapur. "Until polio is finally eradicated globally, all unvaccinated children will remain at risk of infection and paralysis, no matter where they live."

Couple's $1.1 million gift boosts push to end Polio

Posted by Dan Nixon with Rotary News

Rotary member Terry Caster and his wife, Barbara, announced a $1.1 million gift to Rotary to help eradicate polio. What’s more, their gift will be matched two-for-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, resulting in $3.3 million in new funding for the

The Casters' gift is one of the largest-ever individual contributions to Rotary for polio eradication. In addition to supporting our No. 1 goal of a polio-free world, the couple gave $750,000 to the  to fund a peace fellow’s studies every other year. Both gifts were made to The Rotary Foundation in December.

"Barbara and I are blessed to be fruitful in our family business, ," said Terry, the company's founder and a member of the Rotary Club of La Mesa in California. "We've always felt it is important to give back and help others, so we are involved in numerous charities.

"But as a Rotarian, I can think of no cause more worthy than Rotary's work to end polio and promote peace," said Terry, who received Rotary's Service Above Self Award in 1993 for his humanitarian work.

Since the 1960s, the Casters have actively supported humanitarian efforts in San Diego and across the border in Tijuana, Mexico. They founded Serving Hands International in 1982 to help the poor in Baja California. After meeting Mother Teresa, the couple were inspired to expand SHI’s work in Mexico.

Rotary is a leading partner in the fight to end polio. Through our advocacy, fundraising, and public awareness efforts, Rotary has helped reduce polio cases by 99 percent worldwide. The fundraising campaign makes contributions work three times as hard with matching funds from the Gates Foundation.

The announcement of the Casters' gift was made in San Diego at Rotary's International Assembly, an annual training event for the incoming class of governors who represent Rotary's 537 districts worldwide.
