Did you know that Midland was once known for our grass? Sheep and cattle ranchers saw Midland as the perfect opportunity to raise their herds. If you missed the tour, you can check out the museum on your own. It's located at the corner of Main Street and Texas Avenue. The volunteer-run museum is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm.

Rotarians Take Action on Mental Health InitiativesInstead of our regular meeting on March 5th, Rotarians attended a workshop on "Caring for Youth Mental Health in the Permian Basin." It was a gathering of mental health professionals, religious leaders, and Rotarians for a great collaborative session. Our Rotarians walked away with tools we can put into action to improve access to mental health. Rotary International President R. Gordon R. McInally has challenged Rotarians to create hope in the world by championing mental health and wellness initiatives. For the past several years, the Rotary Club of Midland West has provided mental health grants to the Basin Dream Center to assist youth and young adults transitioning from foster care and homelessness. The workshop Rotarians attended today provides another resource to address and improve mental health in our community. If you are interested in taking further action, consider joining the Rotary Action Group on Mental Health Initiatives. You can learn more at www.ragonmentalhealth.org.

What is a Rotary Fellowship?Paul Harris founded Rotary in 1905 as a networking group with the goal of meeting other business professionals and developing lifelong friendships. Rotary’s service missions didn’t begin until years later. Over the last century, Rotary has grown in size to over 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. So how do Rotarians stay connected? Aside from networking at the club level, Rotary developed an enhanced membership experience through Rotary Fellowships. Rotary Fellowships are groups of Rotarians that share a common hobby, profession, or passion. Whether you’re an avid table tennis fan, have an interest in estate planning, or want to network with French speaking Rotarians, there is probably a Fellowship out there for you. Check out the Rotary Fellowships page to learn more!

Membership & New Club Development MonthRotary International’s focus for August is Membership & New Club Development. With the strength of 1.4 million members, there is nothing that Rotary can’t do. Rotarians all around the globe are working together to solve some of the world’s biggest problems – fighting disease; providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene; saving mothers and children; supporting education; growing local economies; protecting the environment; and promoting peace. Members can join Rotary Action Groups that tackle problems on a larger scale than what local clubs are capable of. Not only do Rotarians improve the community – they improve themselves. Rotary offers a network for members to enhance their own skills and interests through Rotary Fellowships and the Rotary Learning Center. With Rotary, you can find your passion and do what you can’t. |

Maternal and Child Health MonthRotary International's theme for the month of July is Maternal and Child Health. An estimated 5.2 million children under age five died mostly from preventable and treatable causes in 2019, according to the WHO. Globally, preterm birth, birth asphyxia and trauma, and congenital anomalies, as well as infectious diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria, are the leading causes of these deaths. More than 80% of these deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa and central and southern Asia. The UN Sustainable Development Goals include specific targets for reducing the preventable deaths of newborns and children under age five by 2030. How can you take action? Develop or support programs that provide immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases for children under age five.

New Lunch FormatLast week's meeting room was not set up due to a mis-communication with Furrs. As a result of this, we went through the regular line and many of you liked the idea. So Cindy and I met with the General Manager last Thursday and we agreed that we will try using the regular line for the next 2 weeks to see how it goes with getting everyone through. We will be starting our Meeting at 12:15 so that we can get everyone through. He said the crowd doesn't start getting there till a little before noon, so if you show up by 11:30 to 11:45 we should be able to get everyone through the line before we start our meeting. There will be no change in what we pay for our meals. We will still have tea, coffee, and water in our room for those who want re-fills. Let's give this a try and see if we can make this happen. Thanks Cindy |

Women in RotaryThe 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary. "My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world," said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01. The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings. The response to the decision was overwhelming: By June 1990, the number of female Rotarians had skyrocketed to over 20,000. By 2010, the number of women was approaching 200,000. |

Membership UpdateThe most recent update I have received is that the District was a plus 20 in membership as of the end of March. This is a reversal of the downward trend of membership the past couple of years and we should all be proud!!
Spring means fundraising events for a lot of clubs and these events are a perfect time to ask prospective members to get involved. A nice round of golf, or whatever your fundraising activity may be, can help form a relationship and get someone interested in joining your club. Let's see if we can increase that plus 20 number even more and finish out the year on a high note!!

March D5730 Update
DID YOU KNOW?
Your District has a gift for you and your club, and it's a gift that keeps on giving. Starting in August 2014, clubs can engage in the RI Vision Facilitation process, at no cost to your club other than the four hours your leadership and interested members will invest in a one-time gathering. This is a by-invitation-only gift and is in no way imposed or mandatory; your club leadership must request it. The Vision Facilitation process helps your club determine not only concrete goals over a three-year span, but also timelines, means, and accountability for achieving them. In order to make this gift available, District Vision Facilitators are needed. Facilitators are committed Rotarians who will be trained in the Visioning process in a one-day workshop, and who will then be available to work in pairs in response to invitations from clubs. Training will be held in Lubbock on Saturday, July 12. (Facilitators don't serve in that capacity for their own clubs.) This is a great way to contribute to strengthening individual clubs in D5730 and thus the district itself. For more information about training as a District Vision Facilitator, please contact District Vision Facilitator Chair SarahLee Morris (sarahleemorris@hotmail.com; 806-441-1346; or message her on Facebook).
The idea of this event arose after the horrific event of 9/11/01

· Tickets for the Come Fly with Rotary $2500 Southwest or United Airlines Gift Card Raffle are going out this week to all Rotarians in D5730. Raffle Chair Susan Wierzba has announced that the clubs in the Small, Medium and Large Categories that sell the most tickets will win a Traveling Trophy that each club will keep for the next year. The cost of the $2500 Gift Card is covered in the District Budget so that 100% of the money raised by the Raffle will go to the Annual Fund. The drawing will be on Saturday evening, May 3rd at the District Conference.
· Congratulations to Perryton Club President Jessica McCallie on the birth of her daughter Layla several weeks ago. Jessica is already back leading her club.
· Lone Star PETS is less than three weeks away. If you are a President Elect for your club, then put PETS on your agenda for the March 7-9 weekend. If your President Elect can’t make it, then consider having your President Nominee go in their place. PETS has also developed a training program for President Nominees that is totally different than what a President Elect receives. So if you are a PN and want to get an early start, then plan on attending this year’s PETS. Currently four PNs from D5730 are signed up.
· The roll out of the new District 5730 Website and Facebook Page designed to attract non Rotarians is just around the corner. This effort is part of the Public Image Grant and will use an updated website and social media campaign that will be targeted to an external audience of young business professionals, both men and women, 2 4 years of age and older who rely on social media as their primary information resource. The goal of this effort will be to heighten the target audience’s awareness and understanding of Rotary activities within the local communities of the District, and thereby encourage new members and participation in the Rotary Clubs of District 5730. Success of these efforts will be measured by the number of new Rotarians signed up District-wide during the period of the campaign. Both the Facebook and website will reformat to whatever device the visitor is using: desktop PC or iMac, laptop, iPad or notebook, and smart phone.
To keep the Website and Facebook pages fresh and appealing, we will need input from the Panhandle to I-20. Photos need to be in JPEG format
· Looking for a great way to let Rotarians all across D5730 know about your business? Then advertising in the 2014 Come Celebrate the Victories District Conference Program is the answer. For as little as $50 you can have your business card included in the program. A separate email with all the opportunities to get your message out will be forthcoming. Katie Salter and Robert Kollman are co-chairing this effort.
· LATEST POLIO NEWS
· Pakistan - 15 Polio cases have been reported in 2014 with the most recent on 1/31/14 in North Waziristan, FATA - 93 cases recorded in 2013. The quality of immunization activities must improve in Peshawar for the country of Pakistan to be safe from Polio.
· Surveillance, at the heart of India’s polio success story
Surveillance was the game-changer in the fight against polio. It marked a strategic shift in India’s polio eradication efforts. “The setting up of a surveillance system proved to be the most important milestone in the journey of polio eradication in India as it formed the backbone of the eradication drive by helping identify areas and populations that were at risk and the type of poliovirus circulating in different areas besides measuring progress,” explains Dr Nata Menabde, WHO Representative to India. Richard DunhamRichard Dunham died last Thursday, February 13 in Houston at M.D. Anderson.
Richard was a much beloved member of the Rotary Club of Midland, and was a past president. He was generous to The Rotary Foundation, as well as many other charitable enterprises. While hospitalized at M.D. Anderson late last year, he pledged to match our club's donation to the "Pink" campaign for Breast Cancer awareness. His match put our club at $4,000.

D5730 Bylaw Amendment Final ProposalsGreetings Rotarians:
This email is a follow-up to the one that Webmaster Cesar sent out on January 31st concerning the Proposed Bylaw Changes that have been presented by several clubs. Please refer to this email in the future for all of the updated information. Proposals to change the Bylaws have come from the following clubs:
1. Metropolitan Lubbock – Major changes that came out of the Bylaw Committee composed of Chair Ed Anderson – Midland West: PDG Charles Cotten – Greater Odessa; AG Steve Walthour - Dumas and myself.
2. Levelland
3. Sweetwater
4. Greater Odessa
5. Lubbock - Their motion is to Table all the proposed Bylaws until the 2015 District Conference.
A Round Table Discussion has been set for March 1st at the Holiday Inn Lubbock – Park Plaza, 3201 S. Loop 289, from 10 am – 12 pm, to answer any questions that your club might have concerning the changes that are listed below. & nbsp; This discussion will be a great time to offer suggestions and, hopefully, develop an agreement across the District on what is best for D5730. DGE Dianne Anderson, DGN John Scott, DGND Susan Brints and I support these Bylaw Changes which have resulted from situations in our District where the Bylaws have limited how we are able to respond. Bylaw Chair Ed Anderson and I will be present for the discussions.
If you plan to attend, please email, d5730-dg.2013-14@sempai.org , or call me, 806-790-5175. If you are not able to attend, but have questions or suggestions, please let me know prior to March 1st.
The Major D5730 Bylaw Changes involve the following Articles:
Article II Definitions
Greater Odessa – The following term be added to the definitions: “Parliamentary Procedure” means the latest edition of Robert’s Rules of Order Revised shall be used for purposes of discussion and voting on any issue before the District Delegates at any called meeting including any discussion concerning amending the District Bylaws.
Article III Nominations Committee
Change the DG Nominating Committee to three Past Club Presidents and two PDGs from the current makeup of two Past Club Presidents and three PDGs. In addition, the three Past Club Presidents would be elected at the District Conference and not appointed by the DG as is currently done. The benefit with this change is that it would allow all the clubs in the District to have direct involvement in the selection of this very important position and ensure that this process is a bottom-up process,
Article VII Finance Committee
· Expand the District Finance Committee from 3 members to 6 members,
· Require that one of the members be a PDG,
· Allow the Finance Committee to decide if Reserve Funds need to be spent (the Advisory Council currently is charged with this responsibility).
· The selection of the chairperson has three separate proposals:
o Levelland – Chair is one who is in his 3rd year on the FC and has been in Rotary the longest.
o Metro - Allow the DG to appoint the chairperson he/she will be working with.
o Sweetwater – Allow the FC members to select the chair of the FC
This change will allow additional training opportunities in district leadership positions and allow the Finance Committee to make all decisions regarding the D5730 finances.
· Add the Financial Management Chairperson on the District Foundation Committee to the District 5730 Foundation bank account signature card. Account will still require two signatures on all checks written .
Article VIII District Leadership Plan for Assistant Governors
Allow the DG to appoint as many Assistant Governors as the DG deems necessary. Current limit is a maximum of 10. The DG will still be required to stay within the Budgeted Amount for AGs that has been set by the clubs at the District Assembly.
Article XIII Method of Amendment of Bylaws
Change the club notification to 45 days from the current 90 days on any proposal to change the District Bylaws.
Thanks to the Bylaws Committee and all the clubs for submitting these Bylaw proposals.

India celebrates three years without polioThroughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph -- reached after a decades-long battle against polio -- Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free." The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio. The challenge now is to replicate India's success in neighboring Pakistan, one of three remaining polio-endemic countries, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria. Rotary leaders in India are working with their Pakistani counterparts to share best practices and lessons learned during India's successful anti-polio campaign. Rotary was particularly effective in obtaining the support of influential religious leaders in India's Islamic communities. Pakistani Rotary leaders are playing a similar role to counter rumors and misinformation about polio vaccinations that keep some Muslim parents from immunizing their children. Meanwhile, National Immunization Days continue in both countries. During these large-scale drives, Rotary volunteers join health workers to vaccinate every child under age five against polio. "We must now stop polio in Pakistan to both protect Pakistani children and to safeguard our success in India and other countries where we have beaten this terrible disease," says India PolioPlus Committee Chair Deepak Kapur. "Until polio is finally eradicated globally, all unvaccinated children will remain at risk of infection and paralysis, no matter where they live." |

Couple's $1.1 million gift boosts push to end PolioRotary member Terry Caster and his wife, Barbara, announced a $1.1 million gift to Rotary to help eradicate polio. What’s more, their gift will be matched two-for-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, resulting in $3.3 million in new funding for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Casters' gift is one of the largest-ever individual contributions to Rotary for polio eradication. In addition to supporting our No. 1 goal of a polio-free world, the couple gave $750,000 to the Rotary Peace Centers to fund a peace fellow’s studies every other year. Both gifts were made to The Rotary Foundation in December. "Barbara and I are blessed to be fruitful in our family business, A-1 Self Storage," said Terry, the company's founder and a member of the Rotary Club of La Mesa in California. "We've always felt it is important to give back and help others, so we are involved in numerous charities. "But as a Rotarian, I can think of no cause more worthy than Rotary's work to end polio and promote peace," said Terry, who received Rotary's Service Above Self Award in 1993 for his humanitarian work. Since the 1960s, the Casters have actively supported humanitarian efforts in San Diego and across the border in Tijuana, Mexico. They founded Serving Hands International in 1982 to help the poor in Baja California. After meeting Mother Teresa, the couple were inspired to expand SHI’s work in Mexico. Rotary is a leading partner in the fight to end polio. Through our advocacy, fundraising, and public awareness efforts, Rotary has helped reduce polio cases by 99 percent worldwide. The End Polio Now, Make History Today fundraising campaign makes contributions work three times as hard with matching funds from the Gates Foundation. The announcement of the Casters' gift was made in San Diego at Rotary's International Assembly, an annual training event for the incoming class of governors who represent Rotary's 537 districts worldwide. |
