Calling all High School Students Vocalist!

Rotary 29th Annual Vocal Contest

ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility The contest is open to students currently attending a high school located within the Coto RSM Ladera Ranch, Trabuco Canyon or Lake Forest area served by Rotary Club del Sol. Any high school student in good standing from a public (including continuation or alternate high school) or private high school can participate. The local Rotary Club may have as many contestants as they wish for their club contest. However, there will be only one club winner sent to the Semifinal.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SINGER OF THE YEAR PROGRAM
The program is designed to encourage high school students as they develop the art of solo singing.  Singers will compete in one of four divisions and at three levels.
The preliminary competition will take place at the local Rotary club level.  Each club is responsible for selecting the candidates it wishes to sponsor.  The semi-final will be held on March 15, 2014 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2400 N. Canal Street, Orange, and the three top performers in each division will compete in the finals at Trinity Episcopal Church the following Saturday, March 22nd.

Semi-finalist singers are expected to commit from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday, March 15, 2014 for competition and listening to others.  Finalist singers are expected to commit from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday, March 22, 2014 for the same.

COMPETITION

  1. CLASSICAL: Opera and art songs; female and male categories
  2. MUSICAL THEATER: Broadway show tunes, operettas, movies; female and male categories

ACCOMPANIST: A solo pianist will accompany all selections.  An accompanist will be provided on the day of competition.  No recorded tracks will be permitted.

SHEET MUSIC: Two copies of all selections must be provided for the adjudication on the day of competition.  All music will be returned immediately following the event.

JUDGES: Preliminary competition is at the discretion of the local Rotary club.  Semi-final competition will be adjudicated by music faculty and other adjudicators the local area.  Final competition will be adjudicated by a visiting guest professional.

Each contestant at the semi-final will sing one selection, no more than five (5) minutes long
Finalists will sing two contrasting selections, totaling no more than ten (10) minutes.

FINAL:         March 22, 2014 at 9:00 a.m.
