2014 Theme: The Rotary 4-Way Test:

Of the things we think, say, or do:

FIRST: Is it the TRUTH?

SECOND: Is it FAIR to all concerned?

THIRD: Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

FOURTH: Will it be BENEFICIAL TO ALL CONCERNED?

Rotary Guiding Principles

Eligibility The contest is open to any high school student in good standing currently attending a high school located within the Coto RSM Ladera Ranch, Trabuco Canyon or Lake Forest area served by Rotary Club del Sol. Any high school student in good standing from a public (including continuation or alternate high school) or private high school can participate. The local Rotary Club may have as many contestants as they wish for their club contest. However, there will be only one club winner sent to the Semifinal.

Length:  From 4 to 5 minutes with a 30 second grace period. Thus, a speaker will be disqualified if he/she speaks for less than 4 minutes or more than 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

Awards: Certificates will be furnished to all participants in our local and Semifinal contests. The winners of the club contests will participate in the Semifinals. The winners of the Semifinals will go on to the District Contest to compete for one of three scholarships and an invitation to speak at the Rotary District 5320 Conference in Temecula, California, May 3, 2014

Factors to be considered in judging the speeches include:

50%-Content (speech development, effectiveness and speech value)

ALL CONTESTANTS MUST SPEAK ON THE TOPIC OF THE FOUR-WAY TEST OR THEY WILL BE DISQUALIFIED

30%-Delivery (physical, voice and manner) 20%-Language (appropriateness and correctness)

District Semi-Final Contest: Saturday March 15, 2014
District Final Contest: Saturday April 5, 2014
