Sheridan updates Oliver Rotarians on Rotary Beach projectCarol Sheridan was the guest speaker when the Rotary Club of Oliver met for its regular meeting Nov. 21 at the Air Cadet Squadron Hangar. Pat Hampson introduced Carol, Manager of Oliver Parks and Recreation. She gave an overview of the planned improvements to Rotary Beach. There are plans for the other parks, but focused on the one for which we are responsible and bears our name. It involves a dock, cordoned off swimming area, slide into the water, a water craft storage (paddleboards etc), washroom upgrades, picnic tables, and improved access to the park. The whole project could run $150,000, which would make it a legacy project for us. Carol was thanked with a polio plus certificate by President Dale Cory and in return she presented the club with a signed poster by the artists who performed live on the stage at the recent Roots and Fruits family day. Oliver Rotary Club was the main stage sponsor. |

Past District Governor speaks to Oliver RotariansThe Rotary Club of Oliver was pleased to welcome Elly Contreras to its regular meeting Tuesday, Oct. 24. Contraras, who was joined by her husband Ramiro, has accomplished a great deal during her years in Rotary. She spoke to the club about membership, and the many ways the club can be unique, and important, in its community. Following is Elly's bio: Elly Contreras was born in Holland and immigrated to Alberta, Canada in 1973, where she married Ramiro. After serving on the Board of the Chamber of Commerce, she joined the Rotary Club of Stony Plain in 1996. Where she served as Secretary for two years and as President in 2001-2002. She was named as Rotarian of the Year twice and after inviting a record number of new members was asked to serve as Membership Chair in her Club and later at District level. She continued her Rotary career as District Governor in 2005-06 and was invited to serve as Zone Membership Coordinator and addressed several clubs and districts (including this one). Elly also facilitated a few breakout sessions at International Conventions. RI President John Kenny invited Elly on the promotion team for the Montreal convention, which resulted in a record number of Canadian attendees. Elly has represented 3 RI Presidents at District Conferences in Albany, New York; PickWick Dam, Tennessee and Mexicali, Mexico. Over the past 21 years, Elly and Ramiro have visited well over 100 clubs in several countries, from Canada to Denmark and Siberia and from Chile to Argentina and Thailand. Elly has worked with clubs of all sizes and shapes, helping them find their purpose and setting their goals. In 2014 Elly and Ramiro retired from the Printing and Marketing and Promotion business and moved to Osoyoos. During the winter months they live in Colima, Mexico, where they are actively involved in Project Amigo, an education project for indigenous children. Both Elly and Ramiro are multiple Paul Harris Fellows. Elly has 21 years perfect attendance. Rotary has been very important to both of them them, they have watched Rotary change and make an effort to change with it, because Service Above Self is a very important part of their lives. Together they have 4 children, 7 grandchildren and one Great Grandchild. Thanks to Elly and Ramiro for attending our meeting. Rotary Club of Oliver names new President, Executive and Board for 2017-18The Rotary Club of Oliver installed its executive and board for 2017-18 July 4th at Worth's on the Water. Following is newly appointed President Dale Cory's speech to Rotarians... President Installation I’d like to welcome you all here this evening. It’s truly an honour for me to be standing in front of you as the President of the Rotary Club of Oliver. I’d like to thank Ron and Tara Hovanes, David, Leahann and Jensen for attending this evening. It means a lot to me that you are here this evening. My journey in Rotary began close to 20 years ago. A good friend Ron Sturm in Chilliwack invited me to the Wednesday Club, one of three in Chilliwack. There were probably 70-80 members. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every meeting, from the presenter to the fines to the laughter. I joined, and began to play a role in the Rotary initiatives. I have my friend Ron to thank. When we began collecting 125 bucks to send a wheelchair to Mexico to help someone get around, I ended up buying three. My son York’s name, and the names of my late parents are on those wheelchairs. I’m proud of the fact my small donation has helped many many people become mobile. I later joined the Thursday morning breakfast club when I began working at the University of the Fraser Valley. There we organized a very successful volleyball tournament which brought in hundreds of toys for children at Christmas. When I moved to Alberta, I joined the Ponoka Club, then the Wetaskiwin Club, where I was president elect until a job in Edmonton took me away from the club. When I took the job in Oliver as Publisher of the Chronicle exactly three years ago, I emailed Mo Doerr weeks before my arrival, and let her now a Rotarian was moving to paradise and would soon be attending meetings. She informed me I would be taking over as President after her term. I waited a year, and was to follow Brian into the chair when a job in the Lower Mainland took me away. But my heart was here. I moved back in August, and am excited to assume this role for 2017-18. A recent survey undertaken by Rotary asked Members a couple of questions. - Question 1: Why did you join Rotary? o 36% said, “to impact MY community” o 30% said, “because I had friend in Rotary” o 19% said, “to network” - Question 2: Why do you stay in Rotary? o 38% said, “because my friends are in Rotary” o 36% said, “to impact MY community” I joined Rotary for all those reasons. I’ve stayed in large part because of the friendships Rotary builds - lifelong friendships. I recently began working with David and Leahann at Oliver Landing Development Corp. I had a connection to David through Rotary. I also contract out to Ken Campbell and Quail Security. Again, a connection through Rotary. I believe that’s why we are all here - for the friendships. I’ve attended many of the Osoyoos meetings, and I consider members there my friends. I will support their events. I will network with them to get them out to our events. We will work closer with the Osoyoos Club and all clubs in our area. When I attended President elect training in Seattle we had a session on what makes a vibrant club. Three main keys: Vision, Engagement, and Flexibility - What’s your Vision? • Know where you are going and how you will get there - How do you Engage members? • How do you communicate? • How are relationships built? In meetings or projects? • What’s a meaningful project? How do you know? - Are you Flexible? • Build your club to suit your needs • Bend a few rules or create some new ones • Revitalize your club • What works and what doesn’t? Explore traditions? Are you current? What needs to stay? What needs to go? My number one goal is to increase membership. I will work diligently to get new people out to Rotary meetings, and convince them it’s right way to connect, make friends, and help their community. I ask all of you to do the same. We are 18 strong, and we do an outstanding job in the community. But think what we could do with 25. Let’s add some bright minds to the table each week. We could accomplish so much more, and learn so much more about our neighbours. Rotary’s motto is service above self. Let’s face it, that’s not easy sometimes. I know I’ve been guilty of not putting self above service at times in my personal life. We hear it from our spouses when we say we have to go spend three hours taking triathlon registrations. For that reason, I would ask all of the Rotary spouses to stand up. You deserve our applause. You too Kayla. My goal is to make this a more vibrant club by organizing more outings. These will be family events. It will get us out of the boardroom atmosphere. So, we will hold Club Socials once a month. We have many exciting things happening in the South Okanagan. Let's go out as a group, and with our spouses/children to connect with our communities. Options include: bowling in Osoyoos, lawn bowling in Oliver, a tour of Dubh Glass Distillery, a tour/tour of duty at Okanagan Gleaners, Wine Tours, a tour of Firehall Brewery, a night of painting/lessons with the Sage Brushers, a night of weeding at Sunnybank. We could host a South Okanagan Chamber of Commerce social during one of their monthly business networking nights. We could open up the Hangar and invite surrounding communities and clubs, and Rotarians. Through the year, we will classifications. Who's Who will take place on a monthly basis to allow everyone the chance to get to know fellow Rotarians. We will work to develop another major fundraiser, we will investigate and apply for all available grants. And most importantly, as was late District Governor Vern Neilsen -To improve our Public Image. We will be much more active with our website and Facebook page. We will work hard to get our stories into the media. There are new members in this club…many new to rotary… I encourage Al and Veronica, Troy, Cathy and Lara to get involved in the organization. Let’s create an experience each and every week. Thank you, and let’s enjoy a great year in Rotary. 2017-18 Executive and board President Dale Cory Past President Jennifer Roussel Secretary and President elect for 2018-19 Pat Hampson Treasurer Lara Kinvig…and because Lara is pregnant, with help from Ernie Dumais International Russel Work Foundation Brian Goy Community Service Ann Hayes and Mo Doerr Club Service Joe Smesovsky Youth Service Jennifer Roussel |

Young Rotarians stop in OsoyoosThe Rotary District 5060 Youth Exchange Bus Trip made a pit stop at the Rotary Club of Osoyoos weekly meeting May 4, with the group gathering at the beautiful Osoyoos Golf Club. The Oliver Twist June 20, 2017Meeting held at Graham Funeral home, thanks to Troy for his hospitality.
The hangar has a sewer pipe problem, so not available. Jenn chaired the meeting. Pat was our guest speaker this week, who gave an illustrated powerpoint presentation on what it is like to be an armed guard. Pat worked for a stint with Loomis, delivering coin and notes to banks and other institutions that had a demand for large quantities of cash. He was required to carry a fire arm. It was interesting to hear the psychological effect this had on him as he went about his job. No firearm Kevlar vest, the same routine each week, so the banks knew when they were coming. So too would a would be bandit. The presentation came complete with fire arm casing and photos of down town Vancouver, Thanks Pat for taking us inside this world that very few of us experience. Next week planning meeting with Dale at the hangar at 5.30 July 4th Installation BBQ at Ron Worth’s. Meeting adjourned 7 pm |

Jeff Crowley on Moldova - June 5th
Jeff Crowley addressed the Club about his recent trip trip to Transnistria (Moldova). This is Jeff's second trip to visit the orphanages and help out. His pictures and words demonstrated a truly desperate situation for the orphans. Jeff is doing what he can to help and fit many of the children with new shoes. Jeff also repaired the Club's donated playground sets and repaired beds. There is much to do here. The Club has committed funds this year and expect support to be ongoing. Jeff is pictured here with Rotarian Russell Work in Transnistria, Sept 2011.
