Rachel Cody

Rachel is the Supervisor at the Leeton Shire Library.  She applied for an Australia-wide grant from Australia Reads (a not-for-profit initiative of the Australian books industry to get more people reading more books, more often). The Leeton library was one of 27 libraries Australia-wide to get a grant.  She used this to entice Meredith Costain, a children’s author from Gippsland to come and talk to Primary School children from the area.  This proved a little difficult because the Melbourne/Wagga flights had just been cancelled so they had to bring her from Melbourne to the area via Sydney.

She talked with students from all schools in the area (including the small schools) except for St. Josephs who had another engagement on the day.  She was an absolute delight and very successful in encouraging children to read.

Meredith did not charge the full amount for the visit and there are funds left over from the grant. Rachel is hoping to add to this amount by appealing to service clubs so that she may be able to purchase a book for each primary student in the area, so that every child will have an opportunity to own a book.  There are currently 1151 such children so it is a big task. She is requesting help from the Rotary Club and Jennifer promised we will talk about this at the next Board meeting.

Rachel also talked about some initiatives at the Library - such as linking with the Yanco Store to locate some books there.  They also provide a home library delivery service (manned by volunteers).

She also talked about a library survey being conducted to help improve its service to the community. The form can be accessed at the library or through the link: https://form.jotform.com/261260572882056

There was some robust discussion following her talk and it was generally agreed that the library is very important to this town

Rachel was thanked by President Jennifer.

Mmm – Maybe Not (It just passed the Censor)

On a flight over the Atlantic, the pilot spoke to the passengers going through the usual things before settling back in his seat, but unfortunately, forgetting to switch the intercom off. The passengers could hear everything that was being said on the flight deck. "So, what do you intend to do with yourself once we get to JFK?" the co-pilot asked the pilot. "Well first of all, I'm going to have a long soak in the bath, then I'll go to Bernie's restaurant for a big steak, and then I'm going to give that pretty new stewardess a good seeing to". The stewardess in question heard this and was horrified and ran down the aisle to the flight deck, but she was stopped by a little old lady sitting in the front row. "Don't hurry dear. He's got to have a bath and dinner first".

A: The probability of throwing either a 6 or a 7 is 11/36.

Explanation: There are 36 possible throws of two dice because each of the six faces of the first die is matched with any of the six faces of the second one. Of these 36 possible throws, 11 produce either a 6 or a 7.
