Vocational Visit – Baamirra Sanctuary (Anne Elliott – 26 Lonnie Road)

Anne and Richard welcomed us to their property at 26 Lonnie Road. The word Baamirra means swamp / wetlands.

The property is a residence and dedicated sanctuary for wildlife, and Anne intends to continue creating and restoring as much habitat as possible for native species by reintroducing indigenous plants, conserving remnant vegetation and supporting microhabitats with fallen logs and rocks. Anne also plans to use the sanctuary for educational purposes, establishing green energy and food sources and experimenting with new technology for weed management.

Baamirra Sanctuary spans 4.65 hectares and features remnants of open blackbox woodland, with most areas in need of restoration. Previously a vineyard, the property also features a large dam. Anne intends to create a more biodiverse environment to support wildlife on the property as well as on the nearby UNESCO-listed Fivebough Wetland. She intends to install a pond for waterbirds and nestboxes on mature trees for microbats, possums and birds. She also plans to establish a native woody meadow on the front of the property, and rewild the rear of the property.

Anne is dedicated to alternative foods and, not only extolled the virtues of chickpeas, lentils and native foods but also fed us some examples.

After our food tasting, we had the opportunity to walk around the property and discuss their plans for the future. Nicholas thanked Anne and Richard on our behalf before we adjourned to the Hydro for a meal. Anne and Richard were very welcoming, and this was a very worthwhile visit.

There was no assigned Sergeant for this week, so it was an honesty session. (But if we were really bad, would we be honest?).

A: To make 3 squares, remove the 2 matches in the bottom left corner of the picture. This leaves 4 squares. Then remove the middle match in the top horizontal row to leave 3 squares.

The raffle was won by Geoff Beecher.

Letter from an Irish mom to her son (Part 1)

Dear Son,

Just a few lines to let you know I'm still alive. I'm writing this letter slowly because I know you can't read fast. We are all doing very well. You won't recognise the house when you get home - we have moved. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles from your home, so we moved. I won't be able to send you the address because the last Irish family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so that they wouldn't have to change their address.

This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I'm not sure it works so well though: last week I put a load in and pulled the chain and haven't seen them since.

Your father's got a really good job now. He's got 500 men under him. He's cutting the grass at the cemetery.

Your sister Mary had a baby this morning but I haven't found out if it's a boy or a girl, so I don't know whether you are an auntie or an uncle.
Your brother Tom is still in the army. He's only been there a short while and they've already made him a court martial!
