Hanna Chiyomi Maeda – My Time Here

Last week Hanna Chiyomi Maeda provided us with details of what she did over the school / Christmas / New Year holidays, the places she had seen and the things she did. She gave us an insight into her thoughts and told us about her new experiences.

So what did Hanna do during the holidays and the places she saw (not necessarily in order):

Tamworth NSW
Bundaberg QLD – Loved the beach and swimming
Elliot Heads – Beach parkrun
Canberra – pick up host family brother
Christmas – with the extended host family – Australian style
Sunshine Coast Beach
Glass House Mountains
Lennox Head
Byron Bay (light house and most easterly point of the Australian mainland)
Surfing – for the first time
Saw dolphins whilst kayaking for the first time
Sydney and the Blue Mountains, experience panoramic views via a scenic cableway and breath-taking 52-degree angle scenic railway journey.
New year spent at the Blue Mountains with the Brazilian tradition of wearing white.

Just to make life interesting Hanna returned to Leeton to change host families during this period before heading off again to Mildura sand dunes. So what else did she do, I don’t hear you ask, well she went bowling with friends, went swimming a lot, had her nails done, water skiing, roller skating and also somehow managed to spend several days in Griffith with German exchange student Joelle.

I am tired just thinking about it all!

At the end of her presentation Hanna was asked what she has learnt about herself from her ‘Australian experience’. Hanna said she is not the same person who arrived here last year, her parents will notice the difference when she goes home. She has learnt a lot including how to manage her feelings better and the importance of traditions. She said she will remember ‘here’ and this experience when she returns to Brazil, stating ‘she will be back’ and hopefully be able to show Australia to her parents.

New Year and a New Venue

Another year has began, with a brand new venue which has a totally different look and feel, not to mention chef. Rotarians were most impressed following our inaugural meeting at the Historic Hydro. Here’s to many more nights of fellowship, fun and great guest speakers.

Director’s Roundup

President Elect – once again the Club is looking for a President Elect to taken over from Peter when he takes up his Presidency on 1 July. Consider putting your hand up to have your say in the Club’s future direction.

Thanks to all the members for their time and efforts at the Australia Day breakfast and Bitterns Summit BBQ. Bother were very successful events and provided a great opportunity to showcase Rotary and our Club. George on behalf of the Australia Day Committee thanked the Club.

30^th Anniversary of Peace Community to be held in Wagga Wagga on 25 February at Mercure at 6.00pm. All Members welcome to attend. On line booking through ClubRunner.

Sergeant’s Session

Our first Sergeant’s session for 2023 was a ‘free for all”, with some paying to speak and others paying for a jar of Jen’s marmalade which was made from the cut up oranges left over from the Australia Day BBQ breakfast. Thanks Jen your marmalade went down so well, some people even took two jars.
