Jemma Leeson, Leeton Showgirl 2019 and now co-ordinator of Leeton Showgirl 2021, together with Shelby Tiffen, Leeton Showgirl 2021 entrant provided us with a sneak preview of the ‘stand up’ questionnaire/ discussion which will form part of the Zone 7 Final, to be held in Ungarie on Saturday 26 February 2022. Shelby took this opportunity to introduce herself and practice her public speaking.  The Showgirl competition aims to find a young woman ambassador to represent their town or region. The state competition has seen a name change in 2021-2022 to Sydney Royal Agshows NSW Young Woman of the Year. The Royal Ag Shows NSW and Agricultural Societies Council compromised on the above title and it is encouraged at the local level to make a change from ‘showgirl’ as well. The Leeton Committee have put on their thinking caps and are and coming up with a name change from Leeton Showgirl. Along with a new name this year’s competition comes with a new guidelines with the age range being changed to 18-26 (before May 1 in the year of the state final), previously 18-24. Leeton Showgirl competition has been held since 1962. In nearly 60 years the competing has not been run in only two year (1986 and 2020) and to date three ladies have made it to Sydney, they being Louise Chesworth in 1996, Katana Smith 2006 and Joelle Russell 2007.  The 2021 competition was the first year the Leeton Committee conducted the judging at local level differently, something Liz Munn and Jemma Leeson I both agreed on. The idea was to try to replicate zone as much as possible so that it is less daunting when the showgirl gets there. This year the judging was done in the morning by some amazing judges including Liz Walsh and Mel Nardi, then they had a small luncheon where the girls were judged while they mingled and had a drink. This event was combined with the Life Members announcement, which gave the judges time to discuss. For the 2022 competition the Committee will do something similar but different once again, so this will be something to look out for later in the year. This year saw four entrants in the local competition, the biggest for a while which was really encouraging. This year it is hoped to have the teen and junior competitions as well.  2021 Zone 7 Final, in Ungarie will see 15 young ladies from around the region participating. Judging will take place over a luncheon in West Wyalong and the dinner in Ungarie at the War Memorial Hall. Both Liz and Jemma will be accompanying Shelby, to support her in any way she needs. Jemma stating she was very excited to get there and see some of the girls from her year that were young enough to compete again.
