Vocational Visit – Rob Houghton

Rob started farming at age 2 with his father. He and Jenny purchased a farm on the Darlington Point Road, but he moved to the current location when the Hinton farm became available.  He traditionally grew rice, winter crops and some soybeans but he has phased away from rice because some paddocks had high water use and cotton usually returns more. He has grown other crops including mung beans.  He believes the secret to good farming is to surround yourself with good people.

He is also passionate about succession and so he aligned himself with Andrew and Jenna Bell when they purchased the Kirkup farms and now, they run the farms as a single unit.

Andrew has skills in water automation and the water supply system is now highly automated (saving a lot of night-time watering).

Rob's head man (Steve) was not available for this visit, but he too is leasing a neighboring area, to help him to get into farming (highlighting Rob's passion to see others get into farming)

We were introduced to Paul Ticehurst.  Paul travels around finding seasonal work and lives in a caravan, but he spends part of each year with Rob to help with harvest.

We went on a tour of the farm and noted the water management, the refuge area and the native vegitation corridors.

We then adjourned to the outdoor area to enjoy pizzas and fellowship.

President Carmel thanked Rob, Jenny, Andrew and Jenna (with a nod to Paul).

Market Day

Market Day was held on 1 March.

It was well attended by Rotarians but, unfortunately, not so much by the crowd.

Roxy Gala Opening

We were represented by Carmel and Jennifer.  Other Rotarians including Brian and Peter attended for other reasons – Geoff and Mary-Anne as proud parents, Mayor George in an official capacity and a few others as volunteers.

All reports suggest it was a great evening.

Conundrum

A farmer walks up to the front door of a neighbouring farmhouse and knocks.  A boy about ten years old answers the door. “Good morning,” the boy says.
“Good morning,” says the farmer. “Is your father home?”
The boy replies, “No, he left for town half an hour ago.”
“Is your mother home?” asks the farmer.
“No, she went to town with Pa,” the boy says.
“Is you brother Jimmy here?” the farmer asks.
The boy says, “No, he went with Ma and Pa. Is there something I can help you with?”
The farmer pauses for a few moments, then he says, “Well, my daughter is pregnant, and apparently your brother is the father….”
“You’ll need to talk with Pa about that,” the boy says. “I know he charges $100 for the pig and $500 for the bull, but I don’t know what he charges for Jimmy.”

A:  The missing number is 17. In all the numbers the first digit is multiplied by the second digit then the third digit is added to the total (8 x 3 + 4 = 28), (6 x 7 + 5 = 47), (9 x 1 + 8 = 17) and (5 x 2 + 7 = 17).
