We thought those days were behind us, but alas this week our guest speaker ShelterBox Australia CEO, Mike Greenslade, presented to the Club via Zoom.
In 2020 ShelterBox celebrated 20 years delivering emergency shelter and aid items to families affected by some of the world’s worst disasters.

Every disaster is different and so is every community, so we spend
time with those affected to make sure we can
offer the right support at the right time to help them recover.
Mike first volunteered with ShelterBox in 2006, as part of their Response Team that deployed to East New Britain in Papua New Guinea, following the eruption of the Mt Tavuvur volcano. Since then he has been deployed 22 times with the organisation to disaster zones around the world. He has assisted with the importation and distribution of ShelterBox aid, working with local authorities, international and national charities and beneficiary communities. As a photographer it is when working in these affected communities that Mike aimed to capture images that portray the spectrum of human experience. "2020 Vision" is a visual diary of those deployments. The book aims to illustrate the resilience of the human spirit in extreme.

Maggie Chant - RYE
Maggie Chant and her mother Kate from Glenrowan West paid us a visit. Fifteen year old Maggie has been approved approved as an outbound RYE student in another District, however due to the high number of applicants from her area, she needed another Club to sponsor her. Our Club has agreed to sponsor Maggie as an outgoing RYE student to Spain.
Maggie enjoys playing various sports as well as reading a good book. Another one of Maggie’s passion is her horse which she normally feeds each morning prior to attending school at Cathedral College Wangaratta. She enjoys Science and Math, but finds Humanities interesting as well.
She is also interested in listening to music although she doesn't play any instruments and has taken part in some considerable hikes, not only in Australia but also in US, Franc and Italy.
Maggie has just recently been voted co-captain of the Greta U17s, by her teammates. In 2019 she competed at the state horse trails (equine eventing) in Grade 4, her my team and her placed 4th. She has been riding horses since she was about two, and started competing around nine years old.
She has read much about World War I and II, and believes there have to be better ways to resolve conflict. She is also very concerned about environmental issues such as climate change and the impacts we are already experiencing.
Maggie would like to learn about new cultures from around the world, as she is interested in the history of the country and day to day life. She is excited about learning a new language as being bilingual would make communication with people easier especially if she travels. Maggie loves meeting new people and learning about their life in the country she gets to do her exchange in.
