Domestic Violence

As highlighted by President Peter and Geoff Beecher:

The worsening problem of Domestic and Family Violence in Australia

So far this year, 58 women/children have died through domestic and family violence in Australia.

Along with that terrible record:

1 in 5 women (22%) has experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.
1 in 2 women (53%) has experienced sexual harassment in their lifetime.
In most incidents of workplace sexual harassment, the harasser was male.
Women are at increased risk of experiencing violence from an intimate partner during pregnancy.
1 in 4 women are hospitalised due to domestic violence and sexualising violence abuse by intimate partners.
Hospitalisations due to spouse or intimate partners is 6 times higher for women than men.
Domestic Violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children.
On average one women is murdered by her current or former partner.
In 2021-22, 5,606 women, an average of 15 women a day, were hospitalised due to family and domestic violence.
73% of women are abused by cyber violence.

Rotary clubs across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands are conducting a campaign to Say NO to Domestic and Family Violence and YES to Respectful Relationships. Rotary clubs in NSW are in partnership with the New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF) and Rotary clubs in the ACT will be working with ACT Policing and engaged agencies dealing with the consequences of domestic and family violence.

The objectives of the national Rotary campaign are to:

1. Raise awareness,

2. Educate youth,

3. Support agencies that assist victims of Domestic & Family Violence,

4. Promote positive and respectful relationships.

Day of Action against Domestic and Family Violence across District 9705 on 1 December 2023.

Our Rotary Club recognised the day of action by devoting our meeting to highlight this important issue. Geoff was not able to secure a police speaker for the night, so he arranged a TED talk for our meeting:

Violence against women -- it's a men's issue by Jackson Katz

Domestic violence and sexual abuse are often called "women's issues." But in this bold, blunt talk, Jackson Katz points out that these are intrinsically men's issues -- and shows how these violent behaviours are tied to definitions of manhood. A clarion call for us all -- women and men -- to call out unacceptable behaviour and be leaders of change.

Ham Carnival - 3 December

Good weather and a very generous crowd. Good help, including a few ‘extras’. We managed to dispose of the 80 hams so a good day. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos except at the end (again). Congratulations to Barry and the team.

Javian met Santa and Mrs. Claus. ‘All I want for Christmas is a brand-new knee’.

It was decided that we use the December 21 meeting at the Hydro to celebrate Christmas.

Meeting Arrangements:

7 December: Meeting at the Hydro
14 December – Annual General Meeting at the Hydro.
21 December – Hydro – Informal meeting – our Christmas Party
No meetings 28 December, 4 January, 25 January
Pub meeting on 11^th January at the Wade
18^th January – first meeting for the year at the Hydro.

From Nicholas: Food Handling

The rules around food safety supervision and food handling have changed.

Whilst our food service as a club is still exempt from needed a Food Safety Supervisor, due to our activities being for a charitable fund-raising purpose, I think it's a good time for club members to refresh our knowledge.

Fortunately Food Handlers don't have to do any specific course, and the Food Authority has released an online learning module that anyone can sign up to here: https://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/training/food-handler-basics-training

It is free of charge and no registration is required.

We are all Food Handlers in the Rotary Club of Leeton so I encourage members to take the time to complete the free training module.

A: The Answer is Johnny. Johnny’s father only has five sons.

Geoff Beecher:
- The water samples from Berembed Weir were dispatched safely. In all, there are 450 sampling sites across the Murray Darling Basin. They will be used to look at biodiversity in the River through DNA sampling.

Kerry, in his own inimitable style, found a fine for all in the room. On this occasion the editor has decided that what was said in the meeting should stay there. (Oh, OK. My notes were so bad I cannot read them). It was a good session (I do remember that!).

Letter from an Irish mom to her son (Part 3)

Dear Son,

About that coat you wanted me to send you, your Uncle Stanley said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.

John locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out.

Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up truck. Ralph was driving He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in the back. They drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate down.

There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened.

P.S. I was going to send you some money, but I had already sealed the envelope.
