Focus: Domestic Violence
Deb used a well-presented visual display to support her insightful delivery.
Domestic Violence –
Most victims are women.
Perpetrators use finance, accommodation and access to children to control victims.
Generally, victims hope their partner, the perpetrator, will change their behaviour.
Family Law has difficulty with domestic violence cases. Victim needs to record the history of control for police to be more helpful.
Deb showed a video titled ‘I got flowers today’, showing the story of four victims announcing their gifts of flowers after a night of physical abuse. The act is of a guilty partner maintaining control.
A question commonly asked, “Why doesn’t she just leave?” This question focuses on the victim, not the perpetrator. The question needs to change to “Why does he do what he does?”
What can we do?
We can listen, believe the victim, ask “How we can support you?” and SPEAK UP!
What can Rotary do?
Awareness – start the conversation
Advocacy – stand with others
Action – create lasting change
Many questions followed. Bill thanked Deb for her excellent presentation.
Fines:
Sargeant Carmel led an opportunity for each of us to recall an unusual motel/hotel experience. Enjoyable session, thanks Carmel.
