Daybreak Develops! Barra de Navidad Special Needs School

The Barra de Navidad Special Needs School, located in Jalisco Mexico, is the only school in the region that caters to children with special needs. While the school attempts its own fundraising initiatives, money raised typically goes toward the busing program that picks children up from all the neighboring communities around the school. Little funding is left for special infrastructure projects. As a result, the facilities at the school are limited. With financial support from the Rotary Foundation, Kamloops Daybreak Rotary has stepped up to help the school. Working with local contractors, an outdoor covered common area has been built that will allow the children to play outside and stay protected from the heavy rains of winter and the intense heat in the summer.

Daybreak Donates!

A great initiative our Past President Tony Gilbert initiated at Rotary Club of Kamloops Daybreak to have a more direct impact within our community was to present children's books to our meeting presenters to sign and donate back to our literacy programs. We are happy to announce that we have donated approximately 45 books and counting! It's a great feeling to know these wonderful books will be put into the hands of children. Our newest President Danica Wilkinson will continue this great initiative through her term as well! Literacy in Kamloops #givingbacktothecommunity #childrensliteracy #yka #books

Rotarians at Work - Salvation Army Kettle at Sahali BC Liquorstore

Some things have been lost this year, but thankfully some have stayed the same!

Michael Schreiner has again organized our Rotarians to volunteer at the Salvation Army Kettle Bell at the Sahali BC Liquorstore! It sounds like there a couple of shifts left, so if you have not done your part, please find your email from Mike and get out there!

You might even look as good as Sara Lawson and Ed Hanes below....

The Less Triumphant Return to Zoom Meetings

With the most recent changes to Public Health Orders, unfortunately our hybrid meetings are a fond memory for the time being...

But that doesn't mean we won't meet! Watch your email for the link to our weekly meetings (hint: it's the same meeting code every week!), or sign into clubrunner and see the link above. If you are completely helpless or you are not a member but would like to visit our club, please send a request for the link to Gurdeep on the list to the right!

Having trouble setting up Zoom? Reach out to anyone on the exec and they will find a volunteer willing to help you while maintaining all required social distancing!

Side note - our next regular meeting will be January 8, 2021, but it sounds like there may be some fun on the night of Friday, December 18 - check your email!

World Polio Day - October 24, 2020

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've helped to reduced polio cases by more than 99.9 percent.

It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free.

If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

12 Years of Food Drive Results!

It's been 12 years since the Rotary Clubs of Kamloops took over the Kamloops Food Bank Food Drive, and look at how much food we have brought in to help feed those in need!

It's the equivalent of 1,177,000 canned hams, which President Tony didn't even come close to selling back when he was a canned meat sales rep!

Be sure to put September 19th in your calendar and watch for details for our fall Food Drive...

The Triumphant Return to In-Person Meetings at the Delta Kamloops

After three more hard months away from each other, our club is finally going to back to our in-person meetings at 6:45 am on Fridays at the Delta Kamloops!

On the other hand, if you can't attend a meeting because you are sick, you don't want to get sick, or any other reason, we are continuing to simulcast the meetings via Zoom. To participate on Zoom, please see the email from Morgan with meeting credentials, or sign into Clubrunner and get the details on the Kamloops Daybreak homepage. If you are a guest who would like to visit a meeting via Zoom, please email membership chair Liane Gottgetreu per the link on the right!

Basics for Babies

Posted by Lisa Lake on Nov 27, 2018
As our final event at the Hotel 540 (will re-open in April as a new brand), Kamloops Daybreak Rotary were proud to sponsor Basics for Babies. This annual event sees community donations of diapers, formula, and baby food and it raises money and awareness of the need for continued support for the most vulnerable members of our community.
We had a great group of Rotarians out to support the event and to present a cheque to the Kamloops Food Bank. Despite the earlier date, this was a record-breaking year for donations. Kamloops Daybreak Rotary are proud to support the Kamloops Food Bank and their vision of a Hunger-Free Community through their core vales: Sharing Food. Feeding Hope. Strengthening Community.

Another year, another Ribfest completed!

Another Friday, another Rotary meeting!

The troops were tired but you wouldn't know it based on the repartee during last meeting!

I'm missing my notes for the meetings before, but I do have lots of pictures!

Jim Reynolds gets comfortable during Terry-Lynn Stone's invocation!

A new Rotary International President, a new Rotary International banner! This year's theme is "Making a Difference"

No idea whatsoever!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

- In addition to the events above, we are also trying to organize the annual Daybreak Derailleurs bike trip! Dan Miller is organizing in lieu of Dan Sulz (apparently taking a trip to Sparta to drink mudslides or something?) If you check your email this afternoon, it sounds like we are looking at October 14/15 and staying at Myra Ranch Resort, but only if folks respond fast!

FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING GOOD, BRING BACK YOUR RAFFLE TICKETS AND MONEY TO TERRY-LYNN STONE TOMORROW!!!!

- Terry-Lynn also updated us on the progress of Days for Girls - thanks in part to our club and our personal contributions, Terry-Lynn and her team have provided 206 completed kits, providing 768 YEARS of uninterrupted school time for girls in developing countries! Well done!

- beer, butter, wine and pop sale! Darren Wilkinson has the leftovers from Ribfest for sale at blowout prices! Contact Darren to check stock, but he started with Bud Light, Bud Lime, Bud Radler, Palm Bay Ice Tea, Giddy Up White, Mill Street, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Brisk, 7 Up and water!

MEMBER BIRTHDAYS/SPOUSE BIRTHDAYS / ANNIVERSARIES

Just do a little copy-pasta here...

NEWS/WEATHER/SPORTS

Morgan shared the Top Ten Complaints overheard from Rotarians at Ribfest 2017, and told us about the new aquatic climbing wall at the Westsyde Pool. Fred Legace expressed interest in learning how the pool's climbing wall works, but Rob Phillips told him to just work on climbing out of the pool!

BUSINESS

Tony noted how the US has been divisional, but their markets have been doing well. Canada has been flat for the year. And those Tiffany diamonds you bought at Costco might actually be Kirklands!

Brad also covered for Tony again, at the time on his way to Lacrosse provincials!

AUGUST 4th PROGRAM - KAMLOOPS INNOVATION CENTER AND PORTER

Our guest speaker, Jonathan Natavio, running late, we got glimpse into just what Kamloops Innovation does in the meantime!

Once Jonathan arrived, he told us about his company Porter, winner of the Built In Kamloops entrepreneurship contest! Porter helps you outsource all kinds of menial task - they vet and match qualified contractors to fulfill all sorts of tasks - from shopping and dog walking to special requests! As winner of the contest, Porter will be expanding into Kamloops! Keep them in mind....

AUGUST 18TH - FRIENDLY FRIDAY

No speaker, so we enjoyed each other's company (mostly).

HAPPY BUCKS

Ribfest dominated, still fresh in everyone's minds....

  • lots of thanks all around, especially to those who work the whole weekend. We could not do it without you.
  • Pitstop has started a new tradition - they squirrel away all the ribs they receive during the year through the food recovery program, and then put on a rib dinner the Sunday of Ribfest for their clients!
  • Jim Anderson was prompted to pay for some gas he 'borrowed' during Ribfest... not clear if he actually did...
  • Some apologies and near-apologies made - Fred Legace to Jim Anderson: "I shouldn't have said it just that way"
  • Jim Reynolds was proud of the Broncos that helped him in the reefer trucks - stayed till the job was done and then headed off to practice!
  • First timers, including Bev and Ken Warner, Harley Rowsome and Alec Hermansson happy for the experience!
Bev and Ken were also celebrating their anniversary at the meeting, and sat together for a change! Ken paid tribute to Bev during happy bucks. Bev instead talked about Ribfest! Kent Wong railroaded both of them into paying anniversary bucks into the pot!

Harly is off to Ireland!

Derek was heading to Lisa and Bryce's for a sleep over... so the afternoon?

The Eye-Opener Newsletter for June 19th, 2015

This was the last regular meeting of our esteemed president ROB PHILLIPS, and his smile gets bigger each week!

Our regular editor is sailing in the Mediterranean and seemed to think the newsletter would not go on without him, but we'll show him! :)

Our Invocation came in the form of a song - Happy Last Day Mr. President - which conjoured up images of Marilyn Monroe, although the reality of the song was much less sexy!

DUES are DUE!! Bring in your money or we send out Costante!

INSTALLATION DINNER is Thursday, June 25th at Linda Watson's house. THERE WILL BE NO MEETING ON JUNE 26th, so don't show up at Hotel 540!
  • Deane Gerry must know by Wednesday morning if you're coming (and how many of you) or you don't get any food!!  Reminder it is $40 per FAMILY, not per person.
  • Everyone bringing kids is asked to bring some sort of kids activity (ball, water guns, etc) so there is lots for the kiddos to do! Any questions, ask Marshall Krueger.
  • There will be a kiddie pool for the kids too, so bring their suits.
  • There is also lots of room to ride bikes, and JR will give a presentation on helmet safety!
  • MOSQUITO ALERT!!  BRING REPELLENT!
Next PIT STOP is July 12th. This is a great fellowship event to bring your family to!  Signup online!  Any questions, ask Lynda McKenzie.

RIBFEST is almost here!
  • SUPERVISORS are needed for some key roles, particularly in the Rib Running area! Step up and take a leadership role for the weekend!  Contact Sandra Blair for details.
  • VOLUNTEERS are also needed!  We only have 52 signed up so far, so let's sign up and get the message out to friends, family, neighbours, people that owe you a favour, etc!  Contact Alison Wegner!  (**NOTICE** there is an opening in the coveted Garbage role - for those who like to drive gators around the park and not talk to people!)
  • We're also on the lookout for volunteer appreciation PRIZES!  If you have anything you have anything you can provide, let Alison know!
  • RAFFLE TICKETS are a HUGE contributor to our profit at Ribfest!  There are tables booked at Valleyview and Westsyde Coopers for July 6, 13, 20 and 27. Please donate an hour or two of your time to work the booth!  See Terry-Lynn Stone, of course, to sign up!
We need a minimum of 6 people signed up to make our international trip to SRI LANKA a go!  And there are only 2 weeks left to sign up!  This is a great chance to see what Rotary does on a global scale, and create memories and friendships that will last a lifetime!  See Wade Billey for details!

ROTARY BIKE RIDE is scheduled for Oct 2-4 and there are 45 people scheduled to go!! Great support! If you haven't signed up yet but still want information, be sure to let Dan Sulz know, as the even info will now only be distribtued to those who have signed up!  (But it's not too late to be a part of it!)

RLI Dates for Salmon Arm are October 3, 24 and Nov 7.  It will now be Fred's job to coerce you to attend!

Next week's attendance desk (at the installation dinner): Daniel Dallaire and Deb Sloat
Next week's sgt-at-arms: David Deol (setup) and David Kneeshaw (takedown)

There were no club anniversaries or member's birthdays, but a couple spouses got older!
  • Diane Henry (Brad) - June 19
  • Deanne Roberts (Tom Calne) - June 21
And Lisa and Terry Lake celebrated 35 years of wedded bliss on June 21!

SPECIAL MOTION - HOSPICE PROJECT
Tony Gilbert and Chris Wilson presented a hands-on project opportunity to the club to build a pathway at Hospice House. This pathway will allow the visiting friends and family of Hospice residents to enjoy the outdoor space, including the gazebo our club donated and installed a few years back.  This will also allow them to comply with fire safety. The project was researched by the funding committee, and was determined that the final project costs should come in around $25,000, provided we contribute some sweat equity to the tune of 100-150 man-hours, to be completed over 3 weekends in Sept/Oct this year.

The request to the membership was to approve up to $30,000 to this project.
Lynda McKenzie moved to accept the motion as proposed.
Seconded by Dick Lewis.
The membership voted through secret ballot and PASSED! There was also an overwhelming show of hands for those willing to come out and work this fall! We'll hold you to that!
Kent Wong moved to destroy the ballots, seconded by Darren Wilkinson.

Our program for the day was a classification talk by DAVID MARR.  The presentation was so enthralling that I didn't take notes!  It was funny, touching and captivating to hear David's history that lead him to his specialized work with brain injury clients and, of course, the Kamloops Brain Injury Association.  We are fortunate to have such a variety of members in our club, and classification talks are always exciting!

Our Invocations have been splendid. Thanks to Jim A.

Here we go:
  • NO MEETING GOOD FRIDAY - get your eggs painted.
  •
  • This is not an April Fools joke. Our Club has lost one of it's highlights at every meeting. For years, Mark Aynsley has provided an accurate and informative Business Report. Preparing for and presenting at each meeting, he has put more effort into our club than many members. His reports are the stuff of lore. He was the first to denounce Social Media as a thing that will die just like the stick-on waving hands you had in your back window. Many of us have retired simply by following his astute investment suggestions. We thank Mark as he heads back to Kelowna to begin new adventures. He promises to return to visit our meetings - I will gladly buy him breakfast anytime. Thanks Mark. Seriously.

  • The Kamloops West Club meet at Kamloops Curling Club at Noon on Thursdays. Do you know where the Downtown Club meet? Have you ever DONE a Meeting Make-up?? You should. Do you know why you should? Ask an old guy. We have many.
  •
  • The North Club is on a membership drive and meets at the old Beach House (anavets)

Well I missed the meeting so I have no idea what happened.
I would hope that the Invocation would be delivered by Jim Anderson as he is a highlight in our meeting. We are fortunate to have Ben's Dad in our Club.

President Rob would have read off a whole bunch of stuff while Dan Sulz read his email and Richard Srepel chatted with others in a loud voice.

Tom C. is gathering Scotch Bottles for a basket for CrabFest - bring one to the meeting for the committee!

EVERYONE is asked to contribute a bottle of wine for the CrabFest Barrel of Wine and bring it to the meeting! No home made crap.no

I DO know that Daniel Dallaire spoke because I got this picture of his lips moving.

And I also know that Dave Deol was awarded with his first Paul Harris Fellow award for contributing an accumulated $1000 usd to The Rotary Foundation.
Well done Dave!

That's all I know.
I'll be at the next meeting.
You should be too.

How big should we be?

Posted by Fred Legace on Jan 31, 2015
story thumbnail
Membership
Some time ago, the Club decided that we would try to hold our membership in the realm of 100. It could be said that we have 100 of the most influential and connected people in our community. Then again...

Generally we have been successful at the 100 level and our membership numbers have not varied greatly. There is a small number though that do churn and it allows us to take on new members a couple times a year.

The notion of a 100 member club was once again considered at the board level and we have confirmed at that level to stay the course. It is a manageable number of people and 100 is the limit for most venues to hold a meeting in this city.

Our goal going forward is to concentrate on attracting quality members to our group. If you are considering a new member proposal, you may want to have an open conversation with the person you will be proposing.

  • The proposed member should know that the time and effort commitment is not insignificant.
  • The proposed member should know that the financial commitment expected from members is not insignificant.

The Membership Director will discuss these two items with the proposed member to get a feel for their commitment. Your particular experience, though, can speak volumes to the proposed member. Our club is only as strong as the members we want to join us.

If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to speak with Kym Behrns or myself.

Fred

What is RLI and why should I invest my time in it?

Posted by Sean McKenna on Jan 22, 2015
story thumbnail
The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) program is a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses offered to refine a Rotarian’s leadership skills and increase their base of knowledge in Rotary.

Dates are set for this Fall in Salmon Arm - October 3, 24, and Nov 7th.

Courses are fun, topical, interactive, and geared to busy business, professional and community leaders who want to be more effective leaders in their vocation and Rotary club, and more knowledgeable Rotarians. Participants return to their clubs with enthusiasm, new contacts, fresh ideas, an increased understanding of their potential as Rotarians, and valuable skills impacting their potential leadership in the club.

The full program has three parts. It is best to take the parts in sequence however that is not always possible. Please discuss with the Registrar or any member of the Faculty, including your President.

The Rotary Leadership Institute was introduced into District 5060 in 2008. It is a grassroots training program that has been growing and expanding since 1992. Its purpose is to help future club leaders (not necessarily club presidents) to prepare for their club and community leadership role through a quality training and educational experience.
RLI has spread to over 350 districts in the Rotary world and has been translated into ten languages. RLI is an unofficial affiliate of Rotary International; it is not an official program of Rotary International nor under its control. - See more at rotary.org

Friends of the Club

Clubrunner has a feature called "Friends of the Club"
It is used to be able to invite Non-members to events, to receive the Club Bulletin, volunteer with us at events, and basically stay in touch with what the Club is up to.
They appear under "Friends" in the selection list of Events and Emails. They must be selected by the person creating the event/email, they don't just automatically get bombarded with club stuff. wink

These people can be added by any  member. All you need is their name, email, and permission to involve them in our communication. The tab is in Member Area after you login.
It is a great way for past-members, spouses who have drank the koolaid, and for anyone else who would like to stay involved with the Club.

This is different than "Newsletter Subscribers" which is a public link on our Homepage for any Tom, Dick or Harriot to receive our Newsletter/Bulletin. They sign themselves up, but we control the list. Currently the list contains past speakers, past students of the month, past District Governors, other Club Presidents, and random crazed individuals. Think about it... they WANT our Newsletter/Bulletin!

TRU Bursary Dinners

Posted by Sean McKenna on Oct 31, 2014

Our Club made a commitment to TRU to provide $1000 bursaries to Students in need, who fit basic criteria we created at the beginning. To fund these bursaries we created an endowment whose "interest" would fund future bursaries.

In an effort to support Imageadditional recipients, and to add a Fellowship opportunity for our members, Roxanna has graciously organized Bursary Dinners, where a member hosts and provides dinner for 2-4 members and their spouse/guest and receives a $100 donation to the Bursaries in their name, and each guest couple donates $100/couple to the Bursaries. A bottle of wine is always appreciated to share with the meal.

To put a Daybreak ZING to the whole thing, the Guests don't know where they are going or what they are getting for dinner till the day of the dinner.

2014 Rotary Fall Food Drive

Posted by Fred Legace on Sep 22, 2014
story thumbnail

On September 20, 2014 Rotarians from all 5 clubs, Rotoract and Interact spread out across the city to collect the yellow bags of hope filled with non-perishable food for the FoodBank. 56,000 lbs (25,400 kg) of food was collected. If you use the FoodBank Canada derived cost of $2.50 per lb, that is $140,000 worth of food that the FoodBank does not have to buy. The non-perishable shelves are filled once again for the coming 6 months.
This year, the FoodBank hosted a pancake breakfast and about 100 Rotary folks attended. What a great start to the day and a great opportunity for many to see the new FoodBank building and how it works.

Daybreak Charter president and past district governor, Dr Glenn Martin (with his wife of 63 years, Mary Martin) was presented with his Paul Harris Fellow +5 at his new home in Berwick on the Park in Kamloops, BC on February 26, 2013.  In attendance to honour this wonderful man were several past presidents, the current president and a few members.  Following a nice luncheon, several speeches were given.  Dr Martin expressed a hope to be declared an Honorary Life Member one day to which it was announced that the existing Board has so decreed at their last meeting.  Through Dr Martin's vision and with 33 charter members, his legacy continues 27 years later, stronger and more vibrant than ever with a membership of 95.

Daybreak Rotarian honoured with Kamloops' Distinguished Service Award

Posted by Kent Wong on Apr 19, 2012

Lynda MacKenzie has spent a great deal of her time volunteering her time for the betterment of Kamloops.  Lynda was the driving force for organizing and initiating the first Rotary Food Drive for the Kamloops Food Bank, and continues to volunteer for this worthy cause every spring and fall.

Lynda is a Board of Directors member for the Kamloops Food Bank.  Lynda is involved with organizing and volunteering four times a year at PIT Stop at the Kamloops United Church, which involves preparing the menu, purchasing food, coordinating volunteers to work at the event and to work herself at the event.

Another organization that is close to Lynda's heart is the Variety Show of Hearts.  Every February Lynda not only volunteers at the event, but is actively involved with several fundraisers within the community to raise funds for this worthy cause.

For the past three years, Lynda has assisted with the planting and maintenance of five garden plots at Crestline Gardens on behalf of Rotary Daybreak, where all of the produce is donated to the Kamloops Food Bank.

Lynda is a member of the Sagebrush Quilters Guild, making quilts to donate to the Kamloops Woman's Shelter, Ministry of Children and Families for kids in foster care and patients in the Royal Inland Hospital Cancer Clinic.  Lynda was involved in organizing quilt auctions to raise money for female cancer patient support, which have collectively raised $50,000.  This money went to support a women's exercise program in Kamloops (Sensational Survivors) to bring Inspire Health to Kamloops and provide patient support.

Lynda is a Board of Directors member for Daybreak Rotary and currently is the Chair of Service Projects and Fundraising.

In addition to all of the other various fundraising and volunteering that Lynda is involved in for our community, she also canvasses for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and participates in both the Walk for Memories and the Relay for Life.

Daybreak Club truly blessed

Posted by Kent Wong on Mar 31, 2012
ImageThe Daybreak Club received a surprise from Telus employee (and non-Rotary member), Matt Dickinson as he donated $5000 of his own money to Daybreak.  Matt's grandfather was a club president in Auckland, NZ and saw the work that was done with polio eradication.  Touched by what Rotary does, Matt decided to help Daybreak's cause.  What a great potential Rotarian!.  Matt works for Bert Braybrook who has been a member of Daybreak since 2008.

Kamloops Daybreak Rotarians bowl in Strikes for Tykes event

Posted by Kent Wong on Mar 12, 2012
8 Kamloops Daybreak Rotarians with their spouses, families and friends braved public ridicule as they had loads of fun raising over $1500 towards the Big Brothers Big Sisters annual event.  It didn't matter if the individual scores were above or below 100, what made the event was the fun and fellowship and getting to know fellow Rotarians better in a social atmosphere.  It didn't hurt that the
Fiesta Mexicana Restaurant was there with complimentary tastings!

A record number of Daybreak Rotarians, their family members and friends (over 30) led by Lynda MacKenzie helped prepare and served Christmas dinner to a record number of individuals (over 200) at the December PITStop at the Kamloops United Church.  Santa Claus (aka Al Milton) handed out 150 gift bags to the grateful attendees.  A great event for fellowship and definitely a feel-good scenario.  We even had our newest members showng up to help!  Way to go, everyone!  (not everyone was available for the photo op)Image

We use our website to communicate new Events and Announcements to the membership.

You can reduce how many you receive by replying to the Events, or using your Password, you can login and select Attend/Decline. Either way will keep you from getting any more "Invitations" to that Event. The system knows who has responded and only Invites those who we have no response from.

If you need a new password, just ask! (reply)

The Events tool allows us to ensure we have enough volunteers or attendees when we commit to help somewhere, or plan a get together.

Thanks!

A number of people were inquiring about ShelterBox and Disaster Aid and what the scoop is on these two organizations.

It seems to me that Rotarians and Clubs can support whichever they feel, so i asked ShelterBox to explain the different prices from the 2 organizations. Shelterbox is $1000 cdn, DA: $750.

This is the reply from ShelterBox, for your interest:

Club & Member Awards & Recognition

Posted by Glenn Martin on Jun 30, 2010

As a Club chartered in 1986, it took some time before members and the Club itself began to make a significant difference - enough so to participate in programs and receive awards and accolades from RI and our own District with over 60 Clubs ALL out there doing good projects and serving others.

To be recognized amoungst such a strong group of Clubs that make up District 5060 is no mere accomplishment.
