The Las Cruces Rio Grande Rotary Club has honored six students from area high schools during the month of November. Students are listed below with a brief description of their activities and future plans. These students, as well as the other students of the month, will have the opportunity to submit an essay and a chance for one of the three Las Cruces Rio Grande Rotary Club's scholarships at $1,000, $500 or $250.
Molly Olson, Mayfield High School
Molly is the daughter of Matt & Patty Olson. She is involved in the National Honor Society, student government, Spanish Club and varsity tennis. She was also selected to the 2012-2013 Mayor's Top Teens, Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program, and 2012 tennis state champion. Molly volunteers at El Caldito, Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary, Toss No Mas and Keep Las Cruces Beautiful.
Her career goals are to become a nurse and continue on to become a nurse practioner. She is interested in attending UNM or Texas Tech for her undergraduate degree in nursing and grad school at the University of San Diego.
Kristen Paz, Centennial High School
Kristen is the daughter of Thomas and Janet Paz. She plays varsity tennis and is the team captain. She is also a Science Olympiad and received an award at "Hey Mozart" for young composers. At the Science Fair she was a regional overall finalist. For hobbies she likes to play the piano (since she was seven) and being a dance instructor. She is also involved with her church group and is a member of the Key Club as well as, "NASA Inspire" (White Sands Army Science Camps). Her educational goals; "To go college, find an enjoyable career and be successful in my own definition."
Isaiah Gutierrez, Arrowhead Park Early College High School
Isaiah is studying engineering as well as graphic design. Here is more information submitted by Isaiah so you will know him better: "I enjoy being outdoors, and playing basketball, football, video games and music. My favorite basketball team is the Oklahoma City Thunder and favorite football team is the Tennessee Titans. I work at Caliches Frozen Custard and enjoy working there. I'm dedicated to academics and am very open minded; I enjoy listening to others opinions and views as well as being exposed to different kinds of arts, music, etc. I believe in the philosophy of work smarter, not harder. I think the road less travelled by is often more interesting and entertaining. I plan on going to college at NMSU or the Air Force Academy and moving to California when I graduate."
Brandon Mobley, Mesilla Valley Christian High School
Brandon is the son of Fred and Rebecca Mobley. He is the starting catcher on the varsity baseball team and was named to the all-district team as a catcher in 2A schools. He also plays varsity football and serves as the chapter president for FFA. He had the Grand Champion Steer in the 2011 and 2013 Dona Ana County fair. His hobbies and interest are: team roping, ranching and rodeo. Education and Career Goals in his own words: "Attend a four-year college and get my degree in Ag Business or Animal Science. I hope to become a ranch manager and continue ranching and carrying on family ranching traditions. I would also like to play college baseball somewhere."
Anthony Granite, Las Cruces High School
Anthony participates in multiple clubs and organizations including: Show Choir, National Honor Scoiety, Gay-Straight Alliance, History Club, and Amnesty Club. He has received numerous academic awards and was in his first school musical and play last year. He volunteers at El Caldito, and National Honor Society sponsored activities and is a part of the community organization Junior Amigos. In his spare time he likes hanging out with friends and taking hikes with his dogs. He is in multiple AP classes this year, and wishes to pursue a career in a biological science field once graduating from high school.
Dang Vu, Onate High School
Dang is the son of C.V. and Daisy Vu. He is involved in the Marching Band, Concert Orchestra, Honor Society, N.J.R.O.T.C. and Shadow Nurse program. Dang has received the Eagle Scout Award, Bausch & Lomb Science Award, Presidential Volunteer Service Award. His hobbies and interests are; karate, piano, violin, Boy Scouts and is a volunteer pianist at Sierra Chapel. He would like to go into pre-med and become a medical doctor.
The Las Cruces Rio Grande Rotary Club has been honored to have these 6 outstanding high school students to be a part of our club meetings during the month of November.
