US Attorney for the Eastern District of California @ the Rotary Club of Roseville

U.S. Attorney Phillip Talbert from the Eastern California District came and spoke to our club!

Phillip A. Talbert became the Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California on May 1, 2016, after serving for four and one-half years as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney. The Eastern District spans about half of the state of California Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip Talbertand employs approximately 90 Assistant United States Attorneys in offices in Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield.

Since joining the office in 2002, Mr. Talbert has also served in the Narcotics and Violent Crime Unit in Sacramento where he prosecuted drug trafficking cases and served as the Chief of Appeals and Training, in which position he supervised the office’s appellate practice and trained incoming Criminal Division attorneys.

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mr. Talbert worked as a Trial Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington D.C. where he prosecuted a variety of federal criminal cases.  Mr. Talbert was an Associate at the law firm of Stoel Rives LLP in Seattle, Washington, in the firm’s Litigation Department and White Collar Defense Practice Group, and an Associate Counsel and Assistant Counsel at the Office of Professional Responsibility of the U.S. Department of Justice where he investigated claims of prosecutorial misconduct and other allegations made against Department of Justice attorneys. 

Mr. Talbert also served as a law clerk to the Honorable David R. Thompson (deceased), Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.  He received his Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude in Economics, from Harvard University, his Masters of Economics from the University of Sydney, Australia, which he attended on a Rotary Foundation Scholarship, and his Juris Doctor from the UCLA School of Law, where he was the Chief Articles Editor on the UCLA Law Review.

Mr. Talbert lives in Davis with his wife of 32 years and their two children.
