 With the help from the City of Mukilteo and cooperation of the weather, more than 20 Rotarians and friends attended the annual "Make a Difference Day" at the LIighthouse Park in Mukilteo.  The hard-working group planted over 700 plants at the park that day and they also helped clean up the adjacent beach, noted Dan Leach, Committee Chair.   Afterwards, everyone enjoyed some pizza and fellowship at the park.  "Thank you to all that attended for making another successful "Make a Difference Day" and truly making a difference in our community," said Dan.  President Steve, who participated in the event, added his thanks, as well.

 The first annual South Everett Mukilteo Rotary Golf Tournament netted approximately $10,000, which the Cllub will use for its various scholarship, community service and international service activities, reported Bill Murray, Golf Tournament Chair.  At last Friday's meeting, he heaped praise on his committee members and everyone in the Club who helped out with the tournament itself. In turn, the Club and committee members heaped praise on Bill for his leadership and hard work.

Legion Memorial Golf Course proved to be a good setting for the event, and the weather mostly cooperated. Scuttlebutt reporters noted that most teams seemed to have plenty of fun (and a few had even more fun than that) but they also spotted several low scores, maybe even suspiciously low scores, among the foursomes in the event.  Informed sources, however, said that all scores passed "the Four Way test."

While still delirious with the outcome of the first-year event, Committee Chair Bill Murray scheduled a meeting of the committee for next Wednesday, October 19, to debrief from the September 30 event and begin planning for next year's event.   Informed sources told the Scuttlebutt that the meeting would involve food and beverage.  For more information, or to get in on the ground floor of planning next year's tournament, please contact Bill.

 

 District Governor Jane Helten is our featured speaker and royal visitor October 14--and you know what that means...SEMR will welcome DG Jane in our own special way (see the emails you have recieved from President Steve Shea).

DG Jane is from the Rotary Club of South Whidbey Island.  Her "day job" is being the President of Creative Windows Concepts, Inc.   Informed sources tell the Scuttlebutt that DG Jane is looking forward to her visit to SEMR with a mix of eagerness and trepidation, given the Club's reputation for "greeting" District Governors.  Let's make it a memorable visit!

Highlights from the September SEMR Board Meeting include:

 

Secretary’s Report (Judith Underwood)

§         Currently 64 active members (including two new members and one resignation this month) and 4 honorary members.

§         Attendance is averaging 91.2% so far for this year.

§         The board approved the following as qualifying for a meeting make-up:

o        Attendance at social functions including firesides

o        Rotary meetings with 3 or more members in attendance

o        Legitimate Rotary service projects – no minimum number of members in attendance required

o        Projects extending over more than one day – credit for each day of attendance

 

Treasurer’s Report (Sharon Berry)

• The Vintage Aircraft Show food booth brought in a gross of $2,526, less $1,160 in expenses, for a total net profit of $1,366. 

President’s Report (Steve Shea)

• Meeting locations: The September 30^th meeting will be at Legion Golf Club coinciding with the Golf Tournament. The October 21^st meeting is being moved to Children’s Village on Casino Road.
• Nominations are being solicited for an Assistant District Governor to replace Lyle Ryan. The nominee must be a past president.
• Rotary Leadership Institute will be held  September 24^th in Mt. Vernon. 

Community Service (Martin Cross)

• Dan Leach reported that the Beach Clean-up will be in October….stay tuned. 

Fund Allocation (Mark Kendziorek)

The following recommendations by the Fund Allocation Committee were approved by the Board:

• Snohomish Red Cross: $1,000 for emergency funds to aid displaced people in disasters.
• Heartbeat Serving Wounded Warriors: $2,500 aide in the rehabilitation of wounded veterans who served in Iraq and Afganistan.
• Evergreen Middle School: $1,000 to facilitate college visits for kids. 

Golf Tournament (Bill Murray)

Only 65 golfers are registered, with an additional 20 commitments. The goal for success is 144 golfers. There are currently 4 sponsors. Bill has to give a head count to the golf course this Friday.

Jennifer Trubenbach is the President and Executive Director of Operation of Hope , a volunteer surgical team that has changed the lives of over 2,000 children...and counting...around the world. The organization, founded over 20 years ago by her father, Dr. Joe Clawson, travels to developing countries to perform cleft-lip, cleft-palate, and other facial reconstructive surgeries.

 

As executive director, Jennifer manages all fundraising, volunteer and staff coordination, supply procurement and organization, travel logistics, and interface with local embassies and citizens for Operation of Hope's missions.

 

In 2006, while on a medical mission in Zimbabwe, Jennifer met a local 15-year old boy named Beloved whose lower face had been destroyed by a land-mine. To afford him the medical attention he needed, she brought him back to her home in Orange County, California where he lived with the Trubenbach family for the better part of a year while undergoing facial reconstructive surgery. The family took out a second mortgage on their home to cover his medical bills. Beloved, once referred to as "monster," returned to his thankful family in Zimbabwe with his new face and new hope for a life of happiness.

 

In 2008 Jennifer was presented as one of People Magazine's "Heroes Among Us" on CNN"s "All-Star Hero Tribute" for her efforts on behalf of Beloved. Jennifer was the featured commencement speaker at Pepperdine University after being named their "Distinguished Alumnus" in 2009. She has received similar honors at Azuza Pacific University.

 

In 2008 Jennifer was one of 50 women out of 50,000 entries selected to join Oprah Winfrey in an all-expenses-paid inspirational week at Miravel Resort and Spa.  The majority of winners "in need of a vacation" had suffered serious stress and calamity. Jennifer was selected because her life is about helping people.

 

Jennifer holds a master's degree in educational technology from Pepperdine University and served as a corporate trainer and consultant prior to her involvement with Operation of Hope.

 

In Jennifer's case, Operation of Hope is in deed a family affair. Jennifer's brother, Stephen, serves as marketing director. Her husband, Ted, serves on the board of directors, and their daughter, Mari, and Jennifer's sister, Teryn, have both served on numerous medical missions.

On Saturday, August 20, at Horizon Elementary School, SEMR members helped distribute over 550 backpacks to school children in the Casino Road area. Over the last several years SEMR has provided thousands of dollars to the "Start Out Right" organization as well as provided manpower and hundreds of balloons on distribution day each year. The event requires about $5,500 in support from local organizations such as SEMR and Fred Meyer.

Dan Leach coordinated the SEMR efforts and Fund Allocation Chairman Mark Kendziorek was on hand again to document the many happy faces of children who will have a better opportunity to "Start Out Right" this school year. 

A relatively small but brave group of 12 Rotarians from SEMR ventured deep into the Gifford Pinchot Forest at the base of the southern side of Mt. St. Helens. Setting up camp at the Lower Falls Campground on the Lewis River,  the Rotarians, family members, and their dogs spent the weekend of August 12-14 hiking, fishing, and, of course, eating.

A representative group of 5 made the 1.5 mile trek through the historic Ape Caves, a lava tube that dates back to eruptions of the mountain as long as 40,000 years ago. Climbing over piles of lava boulders somtimes as high as 10' and armed with lanterns and flashlights as the only means of illumination, the group exited at the uphill end of the caves 2.5 hours after they entered. Although the caves are not actually named after apes, but rather a youth scouting group that discovered the caves in the 1959s, the SEMR members did report running into at least one ape-like creature.

This activity was a product of the SEMR Adventure Committee and was an encore of a similar adventure event in the late 90s. Throughout the weekend, there were great culinary  achievments performed on Coleman stoves, but Adventure Chairperson Lorna Corrigan provided the highlight with her Paella cooked over an open campfire. Camp Director Jennifer Baxter arrived early Thursday to reserve and set up a camp which could have satisfied even the fussiest camper.   Mary Bruggeman was awarded with "farthest traveled" camper award, having made the round trip between Mukilteo and Cougar twice in one day. Rumor has it she made the trip home on Sunday only once.

 

We did it again!  350 Turkey Baskets delivered to families in our Mukilteo-South Everett Community in November 2013!

The Public Relations Committee has outlined the following priorities for the 2011-2012 Rotary year:

 

Community Visibility: Maintaining a presence at the Mukilteo Chamber and participating in community events (e.g. Night Out Against Crime, Lighthouse Parade).
Press Coverage:  Our goal is to get as much coverage as possible in the Everett Herald, Mukilteo Beacon as well as the South Everett Beacon, including weekly “Student of the Month” coverage, Fund Allocation Committee grant presentations, and fundraising efforts (e.g. auction,  golf tournament).

Website:  Bill Murray is taking the lead in updating and adding new material. Please contact PR Chair Terri  Stefnik or Bill with ideas for content.

Newsletter: The Scuttlebutt is alive and well thanks to the response to our "editor-of-the-month" concept. Al Aldrich will be taking over for Fred in October. A sign-up sheet is circulated at meetings. Contact PR chair Terri if you would like to help perpetuate this valuable communication tool for the club. Training in the use of “Clubrunner” software will be provided.
Logo Wear: We are pursuing pricing and samples for a new offering of Rotary logo wear; stay tuned for more information on that. There are still a few t-shirts available (Rotarians at Work). Terri has them for sale.
Project Publicity: Any committees working on an event that will need PR support, please contact Terri with the date and details ASAP so that the committee can plan, publicize and support your efforts!

Brochures and Business Cards: We have club brochures and business cards if you need them for promoting our club to prospective new members or when soliciting sponsorships.

 

The committee is still open to additional committee members. This might be a good way to get our new members familiar with all that goes on in the club. We welcome ideas and input from the membership. Anyone is welcome to attend our next meeting on October 18, 5:30 at Little Red Schoolhouse. Alternatively, send Terri an email with your input.

 

Auction co-chairs Steve Waterman and Rene Porubek held their second Auction Committee meeting Wednesday night. The committee is getting an early start in this year’s planning. Highlights of their progress include:

 

• Pat Cashman and his little brother Mike were formally approved as Auctioneer and "side-kick." Pat’s fee is the same as we have paid for John Curley….Mike is free. If you have ever seen Pat Cashman perform, you’ll know he is worth every penny. Likewise…we have all heard Mike and know he is worth every penny of his fee as well.
• A budget was approved based on all expenses being covered by auction ticket sales and sponsorships. The budget is based on selling 310 tickets (equals last year's ticket sales) at $90 (an increase of $5/ticket to cover increased costs) and selling $12,000 worth of sponsorships (last year’s sponsorships totaled $10,000).
• After consideration of many good ideas and the possibility of change, the committee approved sticking with the “Night on Broadway” theme to build on the familiarity of the last three years, while still allowing a lot of flexibility for event presentation and decorations (i.e. focus on different Broadway shows from one year to the next).
• Randy McDonald and a sub-committee will review and study the numerous suggestions for the “Fund-A-Need” and recommend a few candidates they feel most worthy and potentially successful to the Auction Committee. The eventual decision will be made by the SEMR Board after review by the Fund Allocation Committee. Contact Randy if you are interested in more information about potential candidates and process for selection.
• Gail Painter is working on securing another Holland America Cruise for the raffle so that tickets can be printed and distributed early this year. The consensus of the committee was to stick with the $25/ticket (5 tickets for $100) pricing from last year, which seemed to be successful. There was some discussion of increasing from 600 to 700 tickets given last year’s success. Please contact Gail or Procurement Chair Cassie with any feedback on this issue.
• All club members will again be asked to donate $40 for the wine cellar.  This year the committee asks for only monetary contributions and not bottles of wine.
• Save the date cards will be mailed in late October or early November to catch people’s attention before the holiday rush and before they start to make plans for 2012. Invitations will go out in January. And by the way Rotarians….the auction will be Saturday, March 24 at the Tulalip Resort and Casino, so SAVE THE DATE!

The 2012 SEMR Auction was kicked off on August 16^th at Rene Porubek's house with twelve members in attendance.  Co-chairs Rene Porubek and Steve Waterman were very pleased with all that was accomplished in the first meeting.  The auction committee's choice of venue for the coming auction is Tulalip Casino.  Mark your calendars for Saturday March 24^th. The committee hopes to have Mike Cashman's brother Pat as our auctioneer. 

 

Some important committee and sub-committee positions were decided:

• Paul Kulle is heading up attendance solicitation and Terri Stefnik we be helping him line up table sponsors. If you have ideas for promoting the event, get in touch with Paul. 
• Sharon Berry will head up the finance committee.  
• Julie Frauenholtz will coordinate the "Event Planning" committee.  Karl Duitsman has agreed to run set-up for her.  This committee will also oversee theme selection and decorations. If you would like to help in these areas,  contact Julie Frauenholtz. 
• The committee is still looking for a volunteer to coordinate the "Procurement" committee. Within this category, Cassie Franklin will lead the effort on item procurement,  Mary Brueggeman has volunteered to do data input, and Randy McDonald will coordinate the "Fund A Need."    

There are still important positions open.   Please step up and offer your unique talents to our club's most critical financial undertaking.  If you would like to help with getting corporate sponsors or the raffle, contact Steve or Rene. 

 

Terri Stefnik and Sheila Countryman-Bean will act as advisors this year to the committee.

Volunteers from SEMR manned a food booth at this year's annual Vintage Aircraft Weekend at Paine Field. The menu included burgers, salad, chowder, and beverages. Chowder was donated by Ivar's and the equipment was donated by Total Rental. Financial results are pending.

LaVendrick Smith is Mariner High School’s student of the month for September.  LaVendrick’s passion is writing and he is currently an intern at the Mukilteo Beacon.  In fact, he has a story on the front page of the September 28^th issue entitled ‘Explorer teachers bond, Learn Teamwork at Space Camp’.  Under his leadership, LaVendrick has taken his school newspaper from 5 staff members producing 4 issues a year to 30 staff members creating quality monthly issues.  He has a GPA of 3.7 and is currently taking  three advanced placement classes including AP Calculus, American Government and English IV.    LaVendrick plans on attending Northwestern University and majoring in Journalism.

At last weeks meeting President Steve inducted two new members, Peggy and Teri Busch, the first mother/daughter induction in the history of the club.

Peggy is a Dietician and Manager of the Providence Diabetes Education Program.  She holds a Bachelors Degree from Penn State and a MS Degree in Nutrition Sciences from the University of Michigan.  Teri is a Personnel Recruiter, and is currently handling Providence Emergency Room scheduling. She is a 2003 graduate of Kamiak HS (Trent's class) and from University of Washington with a Bachelors Degree in Business. 

Both Peggy and Teri are interested in giving back to the community as they are very appreciative of all the help they received recently from the community and our club with remodelling and care of their late son and brother, Larry Busch, Jr.    Mary Brueggeman, their sponsor and friend, suggested joining our club would be a wonderful way to give back to the community!  They agree!

We welcome Peggy and Teri and look forward to making them a part of our Rotary family.

You don't want to miss out on the latest "Scuttlebutt" of SEMR. Don't rely on rumors and gossip. Get the real Scuttlebutt every Thursday afternoon on your own computor, so when you come to the weekly Friday meeting, you know what's going down.

This year, we will be rotating editors on a monthly basis , but having a good content will depend on board members, committee chairpersons, and members submitting timely information about what is going on in the club. In addition to circulating the bulletin weekly, we will be providing a few paper copies on each table on Fridays, so this is a great vehicle for communication within the club.

A generous turnout of Rotarians and friends of Jim Buchan who died January 30 turned out Monday, August 22, to dedicate one of the park benches in the plaza at the new Rosehill Community Center to his memory. A plaque bearing the Rotary wheel reads "Proud Rotarian and friend to all. His generous soul, warm smile, and singing soul will long be remembered."

Jim's barbershop quartet, utilizing a substitute baritone in Jim's absense, serenaded the group with a few sentimental selections.

Speakers included Mayor Marine, Jon Rickey, Jims brother, and Bonnie, Jim's wife of less than a year. Bonnie's touching tribute recalled sitting with Jim on their first date not far from the Rosehill site, and now sitting alone on the bench dedicated to his memory.
