Dr. Waqar Ajmal, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
On the front lines of Global Polio Eradication in Pakistan
Dr. Waqar Ajmal is currently working as a Senior Program Officer for Polio Eradication with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at its headquarters in Seattle, Washington, USA. Dr. Ajmal will speak about the progress in the global eradication of polio, and the challenges that still exist in Pakistan. As a member of the Polio Team within the Global Development Department of the foundation, Dr. Ajmal is the foundation’s lead on Polio Eradication activities in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Before joining the foundation as a staff member, Dr. Ajmal has been a foundation consultant based in Pakistan covering Pakistan and Afghanistan on polio eradication.
In addition to his work in Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan on polio through the World Health Organization (W.H.O), Dr. Ajmal has twenty two years of progressive experience at national and international levels (Asia and Africa) in planning and management of large-scale Public Health and Development programs. He has served as a team leader as a short-term consultant and as a staff member of the UN, Government and NGOs. He has developed Primary Health Care and Community Development programs from scratch to a point of full and successful functionality. During the course of his career he acquired significant cross cultural experience and managed large portfolios of professional and support staff. He also worked in community development and on poverty alleviation projects with the non-governmental sector in Pakistan as well as other countries in Asia and Africa. Largely his work has been for the most underprivileged communities in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda etc.
Dr. Ajmal and his wife Nabila have lived in Mukilteo for the past 18 months since moving to the US from their native Pakistan. Their youngest daughter Hira is a senior at Kamiak and is a member of the leadership class. Waqar and Nabila also have two older daughters, one living in Chicago and the other recently moved to Dubai with her family, including an 11 month old grandson.
