Meeting Items
Welcome - members and guests;
  • Ben and Stacey Jorgenson, guests of Libby and Keith Hopkins
  • James Moulden our RYE outgoing nominee, with parents Sharron and David - guests of John Bylund
  • Alice Bellini our incoming RYE, second of many club visits
  • PP Bob led an even better tuneful rendition of "We are Australian"

One of the fundraisers for Foundation are the money boxes. John asked members to take boxes for placement at theirs or other businesses and for home to collect spare change. Last year these boxes raised $140 and any money towards Foundation helps out. See John for boxes after the meeting.

Youth - John reported on RYE Alice saying she was a pleasure to have as part of their family and part of the club.
Also, great news everyone!  James Moulden has received his allocated country and it is Belgium. A country of many languages. James is yet to receive details of where he will be going. James thanked the club for their support and sponsorship.

Audio equipment upgrade - quotes being finalised. In regards to microphones, as these are transmitters, the frequency has been reallocated and we cannot run these unless their frequencies are changed. The cost to upgrade is around $2100. Also looking at a new projector to enable WiFi, HDMI and USB connections to enable use without a laptop computer or use with a computer remote from the projector. The cost around $2,800. It was put to the meeting for John to proceed and their were no objections. Harry commented to gather other quotes. Greg Smith suggested using Ben Maglia for a second opinion as he did excellent work at Community Radio.
Allanson Path - feedback from Brett Locock of the Shire that they have procured $80,000 of federal funding, and together with other funding now have the $320,000 needed to start this project. He was working with the MRD and DPaW and was wondering if the Collie Rotary Club were still interested in having input into this project. A sub-committee has been formed and will be meeting with the shire next Tuesday at 3.15PM.

Coal Discovery Plaque - has been installed. It tells the story of the finding of coal near that location.

Harry’s BMX Club Busy bee – following last week’s presentation by the Collie BMX club on their needs, we are planning to stip and replace three damaged walls of the BMX track canteen.  Doug has assessed the work and estimated around $653, but we have allowed for $1500 to $2000 for this stripping and relining of the walls. It depends what we find underneath as well.  The volunteer crew are Martin, Murray, Robyn and Steve with Doug as technical advisor. This Sunday 9 – 12.

Graeme has organised our next vocational visit to Pilatti Bros. transport and concrete manufacturing plant on 6th August, a 6:00PM arrival for a 6:30PM start please everyone. The organisation for the wine bottling trip is well underway, but there will be limited space for those bringing crates and crates of wine back, so we may need to drink some on the return journey.

PP Bob report he and ADG Robyn attended a Bridgetown meeting to discuss records for accounting.  Bob strained his ankle and it was a good thing Robyn was there to help, otherwise he would have kept falling over, from having a strained ankle that is. Bob also had use of a walking stick.

we need a representative to attend the Amaroo School assembly on 30 July at 9:00AM to hand over the microscope we had funded.  Photogenic Peter and photographer Steve have volunteered to attend.

Peter Reuben has achieved 40 years milestone as a member of Rotary at Collie. The club congratulates and thanks Peter for his commitment, contribution and fellowship of our club, and for putting up with the rest of us for so long.

Keith explained the use of make-ups having to be used two weeks prior or two weeks after the meeting date. He noted an exeption to this is overseas make-ups that have no time limit for use.  Now that we know; Keith and Libby are also included in last year's 100% attendance and need to be recognised by the club.
 Stats were 25 present, 3 make-ups, 1 leave, 1 RYE, and guests for 96.5%
Don't forget to let Keith know of any absences from club meetings.
No luck for John Vlasich on the cards, however our guest Sharron won a prize from the number 13.

Fines – Peter for his 40 years with the club, all our guests, as Robyn was the only one in the press, everyone else had to pay, Martin had those with short shirtsleeves fined for being cold-blooded, then there was the case of the Police checking out John Bylund’s night adventure to show Alice the grazing ‘roos on the Golf Course and he had permission of course to be on the course. The joke about 2+2+2 = 7 cats (but I already have a cat , Miss!).  Very funny Damien.

Probus Club has closed due to lack of members. Don Faulkes has asked us for help from in forming a new Collie Probus Club.  Libby and Bernie have volunteered, Libby having previous experience in setting up a Probus club in Harvey.

Art Gallery – was officially opened and it was with pride to hear many mentions of our club by speakers at the opening.  During the opening there was a short musical piece using the Wuhan Gong and it gave resonating and beautiful sound. It was also mentioned Rotary had been part of its donation.  There is to be an official handover at the Collie Senior High School on 12th August. John Vlasich has this organised to also have John Green attend.

Libby introduced herself in Turkish and gave a very interesting presentation from some of her 3400 photos of the trip, on the VSE Team (Rachael, Caroline, Tenille and Robyn) visit to Turkey.

As the presentation was detailed, some of the points were;
When looking at the photos in the presentation one must remember, they were mainly in the Istanbul region, the city has 17 million people along the narrow Bosphorus. It is crowded and has many problems of an ancient large city. Turkey is a complex society having many conflicting aspects. Politics, religion versus secular, environmental issues, farming versus urban areas, old versus new, traditions v modernisation.

The team were warmly welcomed at many Rotary clubs, communities and businesses. Some features of Turkey are the farming extremes from small landholding and free moving shepherding of sheep to highly mechanised production.

Remnants of the many waves of war are found across the countryside, gun emplacements and old memorials of long ago wars. Schools varied from Government, with little or no funding, to elite schools. Rotary funded a school for deaf children.

Food was great, and offered everywhere they went.  In one village the locals rolled out a carpet onto the ground brought out fresh food.

Turkey has high tech manufacturing and some labour intensive produce such as silk on silk carpet weaving taking up to 1600 knots per square centimetre worth hundreds of thousands. Libby brought a small one to the club tonight for display.

Other places visited were caves, balloon rides, hotels, 11th century towers, Hagia Sophia mosque, blue mosque, palaces, towers, Roman water storage, Grand Bazar of 6400stalls, whirling dervishes, Spice Bazar, and many other architectural examples of old and new.

Libby ended the presentation by playing a recording of a Turkish traditional song with photos of their visit and handed President Neil a set of Turkish Rotary club banners collected during their visit.

When asked how she could remember everything covered in tonight’s presentation. Libby says she kept a detailed journal of each day of their visit. Barbara gave a vote of thanks for a most enjoyable presentation and given the extent of their visit perhaps another presentation.
