Neil reported that he has been liasing with the Shire this week and hoped plans to hold a meeting on site this week would be confirmed.
DEPaW BBQ
At short notice, DEPaW contacted Neil to see if Rotary would be available to cook a BBQ tea on site. It was a scramble, but the DEPaW trailers were hitched onto cars and a very nice BBQ was cooked for everyone. Well done to Bob Greig & Mike Booth who assisted at short notice. DEPaW were appreciative and very happy with the meal.
Following discussions held during a Director's meeting, it was decided that this year the Rotary calendar will be collated by the Club; question was, does the Club also deliver? In the past the Gallipoli students from the High School delivered the calendars & received a donation. This year a non-Rotarian is designing & printing the calendar. The Club itself has had little involvement. As this project is a major fundraiser, the Club should be more hands on and involved and return to being a full club committed project. Bob Greig spoke in favour of the Club delivering the calendars, Peter Reuben also agreed and offered assistance in organising maps for the delivery areas. It is anticipated that collating the calendars would be done on a regular Club night with a couple of assembly lines in place, ready for delivery in early December.
Geoff provided an update on this years' Adventure Race...Saturday 10th October. There have been a few hiccups to date, but they are now being sorted. Unfortunately some road works on the cycle leg has resulted in about 500m of road being ripped up. The Shire are working on having the road resealed by 8th October. The Committee are considering a smaller circuit as the elite competitors/riders would not appreciate their bikes being ridden off bitumen. The Pony Club have confirmed they will be providing hot food & coffee on the day. We have 40 registrations to date; it is expected to have an influx during the last week.
Assistance Required:
*Complimentary water is provided on the day; assistance is required in picking up 15 boxes from the Rotary Hut and transporting them to Minninup
*Marquees need to be picked up and also delivered to Minninup
*Banners - sponsors banners: Shire, Premier Coal, Bendigo Bank, South 32 (BHP Billiton). A co-ordinator is required to ensure all the banners are picked up and taken out to Minninup.
Geoff and the Adventure Race Committee would appreciate Rotarians' help on the day; if you are available, please let Geoff know. This is also an opportunity for "Friends of Rotary" to participate in a great day. If you know of anyone you feel would enjoy helping on the day, please let Geoff know.
A good contigent of Rotarians, and a welcomed guest, attended the Vocational Visit to Pathwest, Collie. Rory O'Connor, Scientist in Charge, provided an in-depth and interesting account of what is involved when blood tests are required; from the precise paperwork prior to the sample being taken, a tour of the various lab rooms, to the varied equipment required in obtaining the results. I am sure Rotarians were surprised at just how involved and precise the procedures and practices in place were to ensure results were provided accurately and in the shortest timeframe possible. Some results can take up to 3 days to produce.
Martin daring to be a guinea pig. As Martin did not know his blood group, the opportunity was taken to solve the problem!
Tools of the trade!
At the conclusion of learning Martin's blood group (A+) and Rory answering a myriad of questions, Rory joined Rotarians at Graeme Pilatti's Depot where a feast of home made soup (thank you Michelle) and fish & chips were enjoyed by all.
Overall, the evening was highly informative and very enjoyable with Rotarians and guests enjoying fellowship frivolities. President Neil thanked Rory for sharing his knowledge and expertise at PathWest; and Graeme & Michelle for providing the venue for tea and organising the meal.
