World Polio Day 2018. October 24, World Polio Day is an opportunity for the global polio eradication community to renew its promise to every child at-risk from this preventable, paralyzing disease and to realize a polio-free world for future generations.  World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. As of 2013, GPEI had reduced polio worldwide by 99%.

Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. Polio can be prevented through immunization. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, almost always protects a child for life. The strategy to eradicate polio is therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.

Rotary Club of Amman West held an event to commemorate the World Polio Day with Rotarians all over the world. The Club's members met at a public location with and  DGE Shawkat Tadrous & Inas Tadrous  and added posters .

President of the Royal Scientific Society & Co-Chair of World Science Forum 2017 who briefed us on the World Science Forum 2017 to be held 7 - 11 November, 2017

Borders between states and cultures matter little as we struggle to find sustainable solutions to global issues like energy, food, water and climate change. These challenges to our stability and prosperity are not ideological or cultural. Rather, they are existential and they require innovation and cooperation to save us from a future of conflict and crisis.

World Science Forum 2017 will gather together the scientists and policymakers who can bring real transformation and renewed hope to our world. This vital gathering of change-makers will have its 8th biennial meeting at the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in November 2017."

In a joint meeting of Rotary Club of Amman West, and Rotary Clubs of Amman, Amman Citadel, Ammoun, Amman Petra and Amman Philadelphia on September 4 at the Landmark …HE Eng. Malek Kabariti, the ex-Minister of Energy spoke to over 70 Rotarians why it was necessary for the Jordanian Government needed to increase the price of electricity. Previous policies and dependency on free or reduced oil prices from neighboring countries allowed Jordan previously to subsidize its electricity and this is not the case now. Kabariti discussed in figures the looses including addressing the National Electric Power Company’s losses, which currently stand at JD1.2 billion and could reach around JD7.5 billion by 2017, according to government officials and said that if the government does not increase prices now “your children and grandchildren will suffer”. The decision to increase price currently was restricted to some sectors in the hope that the lower income households would not be affected by the increase. As the question and answer session started members of Rotary asked about of alternative policies of electricity and Kabariti was quick to talk about the benefits of solar energy and the “hybrid cars” . The session was an interesting one that continued for over a 40 minutes discussing a multitude of topics. Finally the Rotary Club presidents presented Kabariti with a plaque thanking him for being a speaker. Pictures are available at :

then Speaker Nabeel Abu Atta introduced members of Amman West to his iniative Amman 101, he started off with saying that he knew that the concept of chosing to be elected as mayor was not an option, but he wanted to encourage the concept of  “Citizenship..  the state of belonging to a community we form and to a culture we collectively shape. It is a state of mind we dwell on that pivots the touchstone between our rights and our duties towards our residence of choice…”   So in fact he was sharing his opinion of things that should be done in Amman to make it a better place through the 101 items that he belived should be done to make it a better place.
The floor was open for discussions on how to help Amman and the different views on supporting Amman where discussed

“Media is important to society’s development”
“ Media is important to society’s development” this was the main message outlined by   the Speaker Daoud Kuttab,  during his talk on August 14th on “The importance of Media and Society". The renowned speaker introduced the different types of media that exist and how important the media is to society and how dynamically it can help us all when it is controlled by society itself.
He further explained the distortions that are  suffered by the media in terms of the Jordanian government ownership and management of the state-owned media rather than a freely oriented media like BBC. Kuttab criticized the lack of community participation in expressing their opinions on the future of the media in Jordan, although everyone agreed to its importance.
A broad discussion at the end of the lecture  with a number of participants expressing their reservations regarding to freedom of expression, in addition to the importance and need to regulate the social media with regard to children and "bullying via the Internet".
