Rotary Opens Opportunities

Opportunity 2021 District Conference
  Special evening session -

  1.  (Betty B.) Welcome/Announcements – Detailed Zoom instructions/tutorial have been provided on our web site with links to tonight’s two sessions.   We had 12 in attendance.  “Very nice!”…providing an opportunity to communicate the business of the Club.

  1.  (Betty B.)  Member news…appreciation for the Club contribution in honor of Florence (Doll) Finley was received. Concern/well wishes were expressed for Jerry Juckem’s recent health challenges.  Bob G. shared a dinner “sighting” of Immediate Past DG , Steen Sanderhoff,  sending greetings to our Club.

  1.  (Betty B.)  Restoring “in person” meetings - The time has come for us to determine “rules of engagement” for resuming live “in-person” meetings.   A hybrid meeting format, combining in-person with distance technology capabilities, has been encouraged by District leadership.  An investment in equipment will be needed to address the viewing/recording challenges.

Initial discussions with the Lighthouse Inn have indicated a change in our meeting time will need to be considered. Options include – a. moving the morning meeting time back to 7:30am (from 7:00am, if you remember), b. changing our breakfast meeting back to a lunch meeting (high noon), or c. investigating other meeting venues if the 7am time slot is preferred. Member input is needed and a survey will circulated in the near future to capture this information.

We are also considering one outside meeting each month (probably just the warmer months)…featuring the courtyard at the Cobblestone Inn.

Quite a bit to consider – from arranging meals/time/venue to program technology. Stay tuned and engaged!

  1. (Betty B.) Board of Directors Report/Actions – a commitment has been made to support a Franciscan Garden project at the arboretum totaling $3800.  A more detailed report will be presented at our next meeting.

  1.  (Betty B.) Meal on Wheels – Thanks to those that served the last week of April  AND we are immediately queued up for next week – May 10-14.  We have openings for Thursday, May 13th.  A schedule will be sent to our members and the MOW coordinator on Friday.

  1. Opportunity 2021 District ConferenceEradicating Polio, Making History

Imagine…
The end of Polio and what that means for the world.  We are closer than we have ever been.
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.
As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.
Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

There are parallels with COVID … the lessons learned and the infrastructure developed are being applied to the world’s pandemic needs today.
