Coquitlam BC – Friday, March 20th, 2015 at The Vancouver Golf Club - The Rotary Club of Coquitlam has honoured 2 of its charter members; Gary Crews and Ken Webber with Honourary Lifetime Memberships. District Governor Elect, Bill Robson and Mayor Richard Stewart presented the Honourary Memberships to Gary and Ken.  Gary served as club president in 1969/70 and 1983/1984; Ken served in 1970/1971. Early service projects, led by Ken and Gary, included bus service for Coquitlam Old Age Pensioners (OAP).  In the late 1960's bus service was almost non -existent with very limited routes and very long wait times, which was a real problem for old age pensioners. In 1969, Bill Payne President of the O.A.P., approached The Rotary Club of Coquitlam to purchase an 8 passenger van and they would operate it on a limited route.   That was the first major project of The Rotary Club of Coquitlam.  They raised the funds and presented the van to O.A.P. in 1970.   When the bus system improved, the van was returned to the club and it was re-gifted to the Beacon Hill Services in New Westminster. Other major projects included the Blue Mountain Children's Park Playground, which is still there today and maintained recently donation last year.  Other local projects supported by the Rotary Club of Coquitlam include:  supporting Camp Jubilee, where 20 less privileged youth have an opportunity to experience a week of adventure, fundraising for the Coquitlam Public Library’s purchase of its new mobile book bus, and assisting with school lunch programs.  Internationally, the Rotary Club of Coquitlam has participated in a variety of projects such as helping to renovate orphanages in the Ukraine, providing computer and medicals supplies in Uganda, building Water Wells in Thailand, to mention but a few. The Rotary Club of Coquitlam is also a very big supporter of our local youth, supporting numerous programs such as the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Rotary Adventures in Citizenship, Exchange programs, etc.

The Rotary Club of Coquitlam is an international service organization with 35-50 neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world.   If you are interested in learning more about Rotary or the Rotary Club of Coquitlam and its various projects please visit our website http://www.clubrunner.ca/coquitlam/  and Facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/rotaryclubofcoquitlam?ref=hl  or send us an email at rotaryclubofcoquitlam@gmail.com.
