Winona Connection to the Northwest Passage

The main program was a presentation of Hywel Taff Roberts (Winona painter) who is a member of a team of five shipmates who plan to sail the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans starting in mid-August and arriving in Alaska five to six weeks later in September.  For ten thousand years ice covered the Polar Regions of Canada.  In about 1845 enough melting occurred to allow ships to navigate the northern route.  Mr. Roberts and his team will be filming their trip and plan to have a movie available in time for the Frozen River Festival in Winona next year.  Eric Heukeshoven and students from St. Mary’s University will prepare the musical score for the movie.
