for the inaugural Strom Talk to celebrate the protection of our natural environment and Coastal Open Space System (COSS).
Wednesday 5 June
6pm to 8pm

Venue: Greenway Chapel, 460 Avoca Drive Kincumber
Guest Speaker: Dr Glenn A Albrecht, Honorary Associate, School of Geosciences, The University of Sydney
Dr Albrecht pioneered the term ‘solastalgia’ or the lived experience of negative environmental change. The term has become accepted worldwide as the key way to understand the impact of climate change and extreme weather events on communities.
Dr Albrecht’s current research of the positive and negative psychological, emotional and cultural relationships people have to place is generating international interest and attention. He has recently completed a book called ‘Earth Emotions: New Words for a New World’ which was released in May 2019.
Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins released an album called ‘Solastalgia’ in 27 April 2018 which explores how we will reconcile the way we have treated the planet in the future and wonders what life will be like for her children. In a statement issued with the album issued she said ‘There are so many things we do in our everyday life that are potentially contributing to the problems of the world, but we are so entrenched in how we live that it’s really hard to break out of that habit.’
Come along for the opportunity to gain this unique insight into the impact of environmental change on communities, how we can become more resilient and in Dr Albrecht's words 'reignite our millennia-old biophilia - love of life - for our home planet.'
ABC Central Coast radio presenter, Scott Levi will facilitate this free event which will include a Q&A session and refreshments.
RSVP is essential
The lecture is in honour of the late Beryl and Allen Strom for their contribution to the environment. They were instrumental in the establishment of the National Parks and Wildlife Service in NSW and environment protection on the Central Coast.
The United Nations, aware that the protection and improvement of the human environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world, designated 5 June as World Environment Day.
