August Speaker Dr. Tony Basten

Is there anything more satisfying than listening to an articulate expert sharing his knowledge with others? Dr Tony Basten did that so wonderfully for us.
His detailed , yet clear , exposition of some of the key developments in medical history were so fascinating that we could have kept listening for so much longer. From the study of bones in grave yards to the surprisingly belated discovery that hygiene (hand washing) and sanitation were critical , interspersed with the development of vaccines for smallpox and polio in particular , the research into germs, DND and viruses  and many of the people who achieved these things, Tony held us spellbound.

I’m sure that we would all now agree that wider recognition of the outstanding Australian medical and scientific researchers would be most appropriate . How many people know of the vital work of our Nobel laureates Howard Florey and Peter Doherty and so many others. A gold medal for them all!

Our thanks to Tony for increasing our knowledge and showing us how outstanding our own experts are. We are most fortunate to live in Australia.

Our congratulations to Tony on his own achievements. A great evening.
