Emeritus Professor Don Napper
Cockatoo Island - Colonial and Ship Building Industry

 Emeritus Professor Don Napper will be our guest Speaker for 8th October.

He will speak on the Story of Cockatoo Island. The Island was a prison for 70 years and a Naval dockyard for 80 years .   The Island's use as a prison began in 1839  under Governor Gipps with convict labour. The Ship building began in1913.

Since decommissioning the island has been transformed by Sydney Harbour Trust into a major cultural precinct.

Don Napper is a Rotarian from North Sydney Sunrise Club . His background is very different.

Educated at Sydney and Cambridge Universities in Molecular Chemistry, returning to Sydney Uni as a Professor of Chemistry and Head or School.   He retired from the University in 2003 when he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor(Sciences and Technology) and was appointed an Emeritus Professor.
