The visit of our District Governor on 31st August was highlighted by the presentation of a District 9685 Vocational Excellence Award to our club's nominee, Dr Minal Menezes who is Senior Research Officer in the Department of Anesthesia at the Children's Hospital Westmead and also a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney. In her spare time she heads research at the Children's Hospital Westmead into Phenylketonuria or PKU.
Dr Minal Menezes was recognised particularly for her work in the area of research into Phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare birth defect that, if left untreated, can lead to irreversible brain damage, intellectual disability and behavioural symptoms and seizures. Her particular research is focussed on trialling novel treatments for PKU and she has received the Early Career Kick Start Grant from the University of Sydney for her work on PKU. Last year Dr Menezes presented her research progress report at the European Society of PKU conference held in Turkey in November.
