Donner Summit
Truckee, CA
United States

As part of Rotary Fellowship, Ted Owens will be leading a tour of Donner Summit for Rotarians, Friends and Family.  This will be great opportunity to get out with fellow Rotarians and learn about our local history. Here is a brief summary:

The Summit Canyon Hike is something that I do each year for the Donner Party Hike in October.  We will begin at the Old Ski Academy on Donner Pass off of Highway 40 and hike down canyon to the Summit Canyon parking area on lower 40 just before the Town Limit sign.

During the hike, Rotarians will hear much of the history of this trail including the first successful wagon team that crossed here, the Murphy, Townsend, Stephens Party in 1844, the Donner Party two years later, the building of the Transcontinental Railroad and the Dutch Flat Donner Lake Wagon Road, the Lincoln Highway and the building of Highway 40.  We will also cover the routes the Indians took and why.  It’s fun and interesting.

We will meet at the lower parking area on 40, drop a few cars and carpool to the top and repeat upon completion.
