Guest speakers
Heather Norris, United Way joined in October as director of Community Impact
About United Way:
Over 100 United Ways across Canada, non-governmental organization, they raise funds locally, largest privately funded non-profit in the world
Northumberland United Way is approaching 50th anniversary
Funds stay locally but they pay membership dues to national organization.
Historically fund member agencies but have done so much more. They support food banks, facilitate programs and partnerships. For example the - Habitat for Humanity partnership where they started a loan program to assist with home repairs for low-income residents.
They support 211 – a free confidential phone information service with 150 languages. There is information on community social, health and government services. They are adding Arabic to help new Syrians families arriving.
Started community conversations across Northumberland where residents shared hopes and aspirations.
There are three national focuses -- promoting all that kids can be building strong communities, and moving from poverty to possibility
Impacts:
The Backpacks for Kids program is more than just number. The backpacks allow children to fit in and start on the right foot.
90 per cent of children reported they felt better with the one to one Big Brothers, Big Sisters program.
Impact goal – in 2015 the goal was the number of lives touched -- 24,000 lives rather than a fundraising goal.
On March 22 the impact goal will be announced at the breakfast.
Changes:
The funding model has changed -- changing so partners could change. Funding is no longer historical. They will have to go through the new application process – the process will roll out in 2016 and 2017.
The evaluation process is very thorough.
Mynuw.org is the new website. You can subscribe to get e-mails on announcements.
Upcoming event:
April 3 – Maple Leafs Alumni Game, United Way is partnering with Habitat for Humanity for the event.
New donors: It is not easy as there are so many great causes out there. Corporately the landscape has changed. They need to continue to be out in the community.
They are looking for different ways to engage different donors.
