Many Thanks to Pres. Tom for giving me “the week off” last week! Here is just a brief recap of the Annual Steak Roast. There were 43 members and 18 guests at the VFW! We enjoyed a delicious steak dinner along with luscious side dishes and desserts, not to mention refreshing beverages served to us by friendly Patty! Most of all, there was great fellowship which accompanied such a superb meal!
Today’s Noon Meeting included 36 members, plus five guests. Pres. Tom opened the meeting, as we joined him in saying The Pledge. We chimed in with John F, as he started us out with God Bless America. In his Blessing, Jamie hoped that in our soon-to-be crowded village this coming weekend, people would see us in our “Service Above Self”.
Our guests were made to feel welcome as Laurie announced them. They were Jo-Anne, Sharon, Vern, Chip, and Random.
Patrice gave an overview of today’s Board Meeting.
The resignation of Susan as Treasurer was accepted. Susan will stay on, (as Treasurer), until the end of Tom’s term. She has offered to help her replacement if needed. She will have Matt’s budget done for 20-21 before her resignation. We thank Susan for all she has done, and we are glad that she is going to continue to be a NRC member.
The Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner is 9/23. There will be no meeting on 10/14. The Joint Rotary Meeting is on 10/15. Clubs from Bath, Naples, Prattsburgh, and Wayland will gather at Hunt Hollow. We discussed possibly having our second Monday Meeting of the month at Hollerhorn. Matt and Tom will work on developing a ballot to receive feedback from the membership.
Next year, the NRC is going to sponsor a hole at the District Golf Tournament at the cost of $100.
World Polio Day, 10/24, will be observed at Brew and Brats again this year. Many thanks to John!
In conjunction with the Naples Youth Corps, we are going to install a Little Library near the Elementary School. Bo has agreed to build this Little Library at no cost to the club. Shanna will check on the aspect of a Building Permit. Thank you, Shanna!
Laurie and Pat attended the Literacy Seminar in Clifton Springs last Saturday. They will give feedback on this later.
Matt said that two programs featuring the Partnership For Ontario County, and Bill Cook will be in November and December.
Donna and Jo-Anne brief us on the Grapefest
Today’s program featured Donna, and some members of “her team”, as they talked about the upcoming Grape Fest. A few new changes this year will help to ensure that the GF will always be attractive. “Just as Rotary Connects, we are ambassadors!” Donna told us, and she thanked the volunteers.
This year, some changes include a “re-worked” Wine Area, and there will be an auction after the Grape Pie Tasting. Donna noted that we will have good publicity as well!
At this point, she needs some help on Thursday morning if some members are able. Staff shirts will be available to workers. We are urged to be as helpful as we can, but when in doubt, one should check with Donna or Jo-Anne.
One of the nicest changes this year is that the tasting area has been renamed “The Brahm Moore Craft Beverage Area” in honor of John and Tim, who left us all too soon, yet left an unforgettable legacy. There will be ATM machines available, and credit cards will be accepted. Donna thanked Jo-Anne, Shanna, Nancy, Mike, and Warren for all they do regarding the Grape Fest.
Part Two of the program was done by Warren. He praised Donna and Jo-Anne for being great businesswomen. He thanked Skip, and he included Karen, Laurie, and Penny for doing the wrist banding. Warren talked about our business ethics as we work the Wine Tent. Safe surroundings are assured as well. “Let’s go ahead and captivate folks!” Warren urged.
Part Three had Mike step in to tell us a little bit more. There are two slots left to fill. Friday from 2:30-5:00 is available. The schedule for the Grape Fest is in the Neapolitan. He reminded us to keep alert at the Wine Tent in terms of the customers. “There’ll be great music!” Mike assured us. “Music puts life into the Grape Fest!” Our round of applause concurred!
Vern Hecker, from Red Jacket, put in a plug for the Annual Stomp Out Polio (Run. Walk, or Ride), 5K, which will be held at Winged Pheasant Golf Links in Shortsville on 9/29. This event is being sponsored by the Red Jacket Rotary Club. All are welcome to participate.
As one would imagine, most of the Happy Bills today were given in anticipation of the upcoming Grape Fest. There were a few missed meetings: Gary, Penny, Jamie, and Bruce. John and Frank didn’t have their badges. Brenda’s kids were home for a visit. Jack did a nice Make-Up Meeting in Penfield. Penny had a nice reunion with her military “sisters”. Warren is delighted with the advent of the dessert wine, “Joyful John”!
50-50: Matt’s ticket, #118 was drawn. The Kitty was at $60. Someone drew for Matt, who had to leave early. And the King of Clubs was picked.
Win-Win: Jack showed a picture of John F., I presume it was at the District Golf Tourney, doing his “trick shot”. He wanted us to figure out how the ball got BEHIND John!!
Today’s meeting ended with three Rotary Moments! The first was when Penny met with her Marine Sisters. She met a lady whose father was a Rotarian, and though she lives far away, she come to the Grape Fest every year!
The second Rotary Moment featured “The Golf Crew”- Jack, John, Steve, and Clyde.
The Third Rotary Moment was quite poignant as John talked about his late father-in-law, John H. Brahm III. JHB became a Graduate of Distinction at NCS last week. There was also a ceremony on 9/12 at the Overlook, dedicating two viewfinders to the memory and honor of JHB III, our wine maker, our friend. John also noted that the first JHB III Award was given to a viticulture student at FLCC recently! Have a “grape” week, everyone, and may we experience some Rotary Moments this weekend, as we work at the Grape Fest!
