On this lovely summer day, twenty-one Rotarians were greeted by Frank, along with seven guests! The Lysell's daughter, Kustin Bagley, joined her parents and Leandra, Grayson and Sawyer attended with Micah. Chip Weismiller, as well as our speaker, Amy Bahr Olmstead and her mom, Nancy Bahr, were also here.

 

President Karen led us in the Pledge.  Jack chose America the Beautiful, a fitting song for our team at the Summer Olympics this week. Patrice chose a quote from Bruce McLellan's book Kindness Daily Reader for the invocation: "Kindness is in our power, even when fondness is not" - Samuel Johnson. Bruce says: "Kindness has the limitless ability to change the world. We can fill up empty souls to the brim. The power is in your hands."

 

Micah reminded us of Camp O starting soon. August 10 is set-up, August 18 is the Carnival. Volunteers are still needed. Please contact Micah or Frank to help out.

 

Liz handed out the ballot for voting for President Elect and Vice President positions. There was a complaint about last week's verbal vote so it will be redone with paper ballots per the Club bylaws. Currently, nominated Board Members are Jack Fredericks for President Elect and Judy Miller and Carrie Grove for Co-Vice Presidents. Members have until Sunday 8/4 to nominate others by contacting Liz, by email lizardsmith@hotmail.com or call/text 928-864-6909. 

A new ballot will be issued at our meeting on 8/5. Members will then have until 8/11 to cast their vote to Liz by email or call/text. Results will be announced at the 8/12 evening meeting.

 

Rose announced a talk at the Library Monday evening at 5 pm, given by Frank about his life in the Navy during the Vietnam War. 

 

Our speaker today was Amy Bahr Olmstead, talking about her experience with homeschooling. Her children are Emma, 11, and Caleb, 6. She has been homeschooling for 6 years. Her homeschooling preference precludes her children from spending 9 hours away from home each school day. Amy has to follow NYS guidelines for ages 6-17. She has to notify NYS and teach specified subjects with yearly testing of her children. The school district must approve the chosen curriculum and quarterly reports go to Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES. Amy created the Ingleside  Homeschooling Co-op several years ago with a group of families. Most families teach the core classes at home but work together to plan electives and field trips. They also can save money on materials for science experiments, art supplies, etc. They do community service together as well as gardening, cooking and building Ginger Bread houses! They can have up to 20 families in the co-op, there are currently about 20 children between kindergarten and 10th grade.

 

The Ace of Hearts was at $94. Bo had the winning ticket but chose the King of Spades. Better Luck next week!

Happy Bills went to Amy for her excellent presentation and the gift from the Co-op to Naples Angels last year. Chip was happy to be back from a vacation to join us. Amy was congratulated for the effort it takes to be a homeschooling family.

Brenda's Rotary Moment was for seeing a member the NCS Class of 1984 who will be home for their 40th reunion soon. It's great to have a wonderful community to call home.

 

Karen led us in the Four Way Test and rang the bell to adjourn at 12:47pm. Next week's meeting is at noon.
