This first meeting of June brought out 21 Naples Rotarians, as well as Florida Rotarian Chip (here for the summer), second time visitor Jan and today's speaker from Ontario County Office for the Aging, Triciajean Jones, Director and Summer Intern Connor Wille, a business student at the University of Kentucky.

 

President Liz rang the bell to start the meeting, followed by The Pledge of Allegiance and Jack leading us in the Star Spangled Banner. Bruce McLellan read his poem "We Welcome June" for the invocation. (See below)

 

Announcements:

*The Memorial Gathering for Bill Cooper is this Saturday, 6/8, at Reservoir Creek at 2:30pm.

*The Camp O golf tournament raffles are on-line until Friday, 6/7 at 6:00 pm. See Micah's email for the link. The tournament is on Saturday with two Rotary teams participating. 

*Rotary Lite is scheduled for June 12th, at 6 pm. Location to be determined. Marty suggested meeting at the newly open pickleball court for a demo of the game.

*June is Rotary Service Month. Liz suggested 6/22 as a Day of Service, requesting ideas for activities. This date is the day of High School graduation in Naples so an alternate date was suggested. Perhaps this project could be planned during the Rotary Lite gathering.

*This Sunday, 6/9 is the 60th anniversary event at Bristol Valley Theater. It includes an art sale, food and drink and a concert featuring 60's music of Bob Dylan! The fun starts at 1 pm with the concert at 2pm. 

*The District 7120 Golf Tournament is on the first Friday of September. Jack is organizing it at Reservoir Creek. More details to follow.

*Our Gavel Dinner, passing it from Liz to Karen, is on June 24th at Brews & Brats. Social hour at 5:30, dinner at 6 pm. Let Skip know you're coming by 6/17!

 

Our program today provided loads of information about the Ontario County Office for the Aging and all the services they have for seniors. Triciajean has been the director for about one year, following a background in Long Term Care, Recreation Therapy and as a Nursing Home Director. The OFA provides for Ontario County residents at 60 years old. All Baby Boomers are now eligible! By 2030, there will be more citizens over 60 than under 18 years old. Ontario County OFA served  more than 13,000 people last year! Some of the programs offered include: tax prep assistance, health insurance counseling, home care referrals, home delivered meals, home repair grants, care coordination, transportation, respite for care givers, legal assistance, wellness programs and volunteer opportunities. There are currently about 250 volunteering to help their neighbors in need. So many of these services are needed here in Naples and discussions arose about how to get the word out. There was a lot of interest in pursuing a way to get our neighbors the help they could use through this program. Perhaps this could be our Service Project this month and going forward.

A Rotary Moment today was Nancy's and Karen's twinning apparel - bright blue shirts with white pants! They swear it wasn't planned! Another moment described by Frank was the full use of the new pickleball courts at the Community Park on Saturday, with players from 10 - 80 years of age! Congrats and thanks to those who brought this together for Naples!

 

The Ace of Hearts was up to $298 with only 8 cards to pick from! Blanche's number 2595 was pulled, and she was so close with the Ace of Diamonds! Maybe next week will be the winner!

 

Happy Bills included many kudos for the great presentation about OFA and for the Food Pop-Up Pantry happening later this afternoon on Tobey Street. All are welcome to receive close to 100 pounds of free food!

Rose and Cindy enjoyed a fantastic concert at Bristol Grange Hall last Thursday with fiddler Jay Ungar and guitar/piano/banjo player Molly Mason. It was a benefit for Bristol Hills Historical Society. Jack reminded us of the importance of quickly connecting with meeting attendees no one sits alone. Chip Weismiller is happy to be here joining us for the summer!
