Wow, what a great reprieve from the summer heat today! Cold weather will come soon enough (brrrr...) but this was a day to enjoy the cool breeze! Seventeen Rotarians gathered at the Redwood, greeted today by John. Welcome friends!

 

President Jack led the Pledge and God Bless America. The inspiration was posted on FB by Sherry, read by Cindy: "People wait all day for 5 pm. All week for Friday. All summer for winter. All winter for summer and all of life for happiness. Don't let the pursuit of tomorrow diminish the joy of today!"

 

Our guests today were Jordan Shearing (soon to be Smith) who was celebrating her grandma Jo Anne's birthday today. Our speaker was Triciajean Jones Saxton. Also joining us today was Nancy Latour, Area 6 Assistant Governor, who introduced our new District 7120 Governor Jim Crane and companion Nancy Loughlin.

 

Jack gave the highlights of today's Board Meeting:

We will order a bike rack from Gananda Rotary's fund- raiser to be put near the pickleball court. * We are working toward trimming trees and lighting the cross at Rose Ridge Cemetery. * We will replace the sound system used for meetings soon. Funds came from the Ace of Hearts pot that wasn't won! * Peace Pole project is progressing. * One Rotary Summit is September 6th in Avon. Register on the District website. * Family Promise golf tourney is 9/6 also. * District Golf Tourney is Friday 9/12 at Res Creek. * Two new club members were approved by the board. An Email is coming for club review this week. * Fall steak dinner is at VFW on 9/8. See Skip for $20 reservations. Bring a dish to share. * Alex Leto memorial celebration is Saturday at Trinity, 12-4 pm. * Hospeace House Fall Festival fundraiser is 9/13 and 14. Volunteers are needed. See Sue or Jo. * There is also a concert for Hospeace House - info coming soon.

 

Triciajean visited from Ontario County Office for the Aging. She brought some info on new programs and services being offered for seniors over 60 years old. Highlights include the community dining program, caregiver services, health insurance information counseling and assistance, and transportation for those who don't drive. Triciajean spoke on financial scams that are affecting everyone but are particularly aimed at seniors. She has been working with Sgt. Griffin of the Ontario Co. Sheriff Dept. to help people avoid fraud and scammers who are creative in stealing money and information. Online romance and friendship scams are very common, amounting to $3.2 billion lost in the US/ year. She gave examples of some common scams. To avoid them, trust your gut; if it seems too good, it probably is. Don't answer questions about your personal information. When in doubt, hang up on the caller and call the organization they say they are from. Create a family "safe word" to use in verifying the caller. Put limits on how much can be taken from your bank account in a day. Check your bank and card balances frequently. Get a credit report 3 times a year. Don't click on links on websites. Keep your cards in RFID protective sleeves.

 

Nancy Latour invited us to the Peace Pole dedication by the Bath Rotary on September 4th, on Liberty Street. She then introduced Jim Crane. He has been a member of Victor-Farmington Club, a board member and Club President. His career began in the Canandaigua City Water Dept. and in 1984 he started working with a coalition of Canandaigua, Victor, Farmington, Hopewell and Manchester water and sewer departments. He also created an indoor archery business. He has 3 children and 10 grandchildren. Jim's message for us was conveying the Rotary International President's goals of one great shared dream of Membership, Peace, and Polio Eradication. We should strive to change lives, change communities and change the world for generations to come as we Unite for Good!

Jim mentioned upcoming learning opportunities: One Summit focusing on the Rotary Action Plan (9/6 in Avon), District Learning Assembly (April in Waterloo), Leadership Institute (October in Victor), and President- Elect training on Zoom. Several new chairpersons have been added: Karen Parkhurst - District Foundation, Liz Yee - Mental Health committee, Carrie Grove - RYLA, and Julie Carney - Youth Services and New Generations. Dave DeMers is Rotaract Chair and Drew Kessler is Interact Chair.

 

The Ace of Hearts was up to $100. Ticket #9113 was picked by Jim Crane. Bruce had the ticket but drew the 9 of Clubs.

Happy Bills went to thanking Triciajean for her program and all the services of OCOA. Congrats to the new District leaders. Thanks to the program committee. Looking forward to the golf tourney soon. Grady heads to college at Alfred State and Charlie returns to Clarkson. Thankful for good health. Celebration of a 50th HS class reunion and thanks to Laurie for stepping in. Jordan has been hired as a Special Ed teacher at NCS. Happy birthday was sung to Jo Anne.
