Everyone was in a great mood tonight as we enjoyed a beautiful, sunny almost-spring day! Frank greeted us as 23 Naples Rotarians were joined by our speaker, her husband (Canandaigua Rotarians) and 3 NHS students - Anna, Uryu and Grady.

 

Jack led the Pledge and our song, You're a Grand Old Flag. Judy shared words of inspiration about the value and rewards of giving of ourself in service to others.

 

Albie brought a painting he is donating to the raffle for the Trout Derby. This year, he included a female angler doing the hard part of catching a fish! Thanks for the great work, Albie! The Derby set-up will be Monday evening, 5 pm on 3/31 at the firehall, with the Derby itself starting Tuesday morning at 5am. Please let the committee know if you can help. 

 

Announcements: PELS training is this weekend - Jack will attend. * Rotary Lite is Wednesday at 6 pm in the Memorial Building (between the churches on Main St). It's a social time giving an opportunity to get to know your fellow Rotarians. * Rotary Wellness Day is Sunday, March 30th from 6-9 pm.  Liz Yee has more info. * The Camp Onseyawa Golf Tournament is Sat. June 14th at Silver Creek Golf. More info to follow. * This is Rotary Water and Sanitation month. Tonight's speaker will elaborate on District 7120 efforts.

 

Our speaker was Jodi Kaufman, who with husband Rick, are Canandaigua Rotarians. They moved here from LA in 2005, got involved with Rotary and Jodi took on the leadership of the "Green Team" of District 7120 in 2020. The District Environmental Action Committee meets the 4th Monday of each month at 7 pm on Zoom. This Committee can help Clubs with event planning and finding grants for environmental projects in our area. The environment is the Seventh Area of Focus for Rotary, and of special interest to the incoming President of Rotary International, Mario Cesar Martins de Camargo. The March issue of Rotary Magazine has an interview with him. Jodi highlighted some of the local projects she is involved with, including ESRAG, a district action group. Local focus is on solar initiatives (you can add your own solar panels to a registry), eliminating food waste, pollination projects, community gardens and reducing plastics. 2025 Earth Day event is a Trash Olympics where clubs compete to collect the most trash and win cash prizes! Happy Bills were given for the excellent program, Albie's painting, great weather, Carrie's 50th birthday, Women's Weekend success and best wishes to Skip after his medical procedure.

 

Naples has been doing environmental projects for many years, including clean up of the Creek after the Trout Derby, clean up of Rose Ridge Cemetery, composting at a home on Reed Street, composting at Naples Elementary School which goes to a local worm farm, and a possible community garden through efforts of Naples Library. Many of the cans and bottles in Naples are donated to support Hospeace House.

 

Judy had a Rotary Moment of remembering Mae Campbell, who for many years, played piano for the men in Rotary at the Naples Hotel, long before women were allowed in the Club. She played three songs each meeting by ear! At a time when Mae was not available, Judy was asked by her dad, Bruce Clawson, to play. Although she was intimidated to be the only woman there, she could not say no to her dad! It was noted that tonight's meeting was attended by 18 women and 11 men. Happy Women's History Month!

 

We recited the Four Way Test from memory as the slide wouldn't come up. The gathering was adjourned by Jack with the bell.
