We were greeted this fall day by smiling Frank Duserick as we gathered for lunch. There were twenty-three members as well as guests Sharon Fredericks, Chip Weismiller, Alan Stone, Ralph Brandt and Jean Chrisman. Ashley Davoli was our speaker this noon.

Liz led us in the Pledge, Jack started America the Beautiful, followed by Inspirational Thoughts from Liz. Upcoming events included: World Polio Day at Brews & Brats on Tuesday 10/24 and Light Up Naples on 12/9. The first committee meeting for LUN is Tuesday, 9/26 at 3 pm at Rose's house. Please let her know if you can be there.  Final Grape Festival volunteer sign up sheets were circulated - only 5 days away! Help is needed for set-up this week, especially Thursday and Friday.

Info from the Board meeting earlier today includes:
A discussion of Robert's Rules which really are about courtesy - we want to bring them back into use to enable everyone to participate fully in discussions and decision making. Raising hands to be recognized will reduce talking over one another. We should also be mindful of avoiding microaggression = rudeness of side conversations, eye rolls, etc. Listening to others will enhance the Happy Bills we share.
Jack spoke about taking on the chair of the District Golf Tournament next fall and hopefully bringing it to Naples. It would be the first Friday of September, with more than 100 participants.  Proceeds go to the District Governor's Fund for special projects.
Watch for an email soon re: your thoughts about our opening invocation.
The District Grapevine has info about Bouncing for the Foundation - a fundraising campaign.

Our speaker today is Ashley Davoli from the Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes. This organization works to provide the best care for children who have been abused. The Finger Lakes group started in 2008 in Phelps. Ashley has filled many roles in that time. She gave us the sad statistics of child abuse in the US and in NYS. In 2022, 19000 children were reported in NYS and many children don't speak up. Many cases come to the Center from mandated reporters such as teachers and doctors. The Center provides all services needed in one place so the child tells their story only once. Included are medical, mental health, law enforcement and child protective services. The Finger Lakes Center covers Yates (Penn Yan), Seneca (Waterloo) and Ontario (Canandaigua) Counties. Ashley shared how to respond if a child speaks of abuse and the importance of reporting it immediately to the Child Advocacy Center where experts can provide the best service to the child.
The CAC also has a number of ways to support their work as volunteers and financial supporters.

The Ace of Hearts was up to $211 today. Ticket 1025 was Blanche's but she drew the King of Clubs.
A Rotary Moment from Steve Richards was a phone call with Roberta Jordans who is doing well and sends greetings from Florida.
David Dial shared a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt:
Surely, in the light of history, it is more intelligent to hope rather than to fear, to try rather than not to try. For one thing we know beyond all doubt: Nothing has ever been achieved by the person who says "It can't be done."

Happy Bills honored today's program and Ashley's organization, the Grape Festival, the Open Cupboard, Camp Onseyawa, Rose's return to Naples 4 years ago and Nancy's 37 years on the porch of the Memorial Town Hall for Grape Fest!
JoAnne noted that Rochester Regional Health folks will be at the Festival to provide info for people needing healthcare after the closing of Dr. Long's office.

We ended the meeting learning the Rotary Pledge and reciting the Rotary Four Way Test.

See you at the Grape Festival!
