Just as the U.S. Postal Service delivers the mail, regardless what the weather may be, so does the Naples Rotary find ways to meet despite the current (global) situation. There were 20 members who received credit for attendance at today’s meeting. This includes those who attended the Board Meeting held earlier, and the two members who “tuned in” online. Though we were a smaller-than-usual group, Pres. Tom was glad to see the turnout this noon. We joined him in saying The Pledge. John F. led us in singing God Bless America. Steve’s fervent Blessing echoed the sentiment that went something like this: “Thank you, Lord, we know that we can rely on you during these trying times.” Indeed, we can, Steve! Laurie introduced our only guest, Kaiden, who is Karen’s grandson.

Tom shared some communications with us. Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, there have been many changes that have arisen. The District Training Assembly, to be held in April, and the District Conference, to be held in May, have both been cancelled. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Sands Cancer Center has been postponed. Tom also reviewed the Club Calendar. In addition to the planned programs, there will be a Club Assembly on 4/6. As school has closed, the Dental Health Stories were not given. We had an alternate program provided by Bruce M., entitled “The Power of Imagination”.

Under “What’s Happening”, here are some highlights from today’s Board Meeting. Instead of Facebook Live, today’s club meeting will be conducted using a new technological approach known as “Zoom”. Bruce M., Tom, and John F. will implement this. Steve read a note from Mike Ball, thanking us for the help in the installation of controls in his vehicle to enable him to drive. We accepted Joan’s request to become an Honorary Member of the club. In addition to the District Training Assembly, and the District Conference being cancelled, the Naples Trout Derby and the Spring Dinner have been cancelled. Online meetings will continue to take place, and those wishing to participate in this manner will still receive credit for (perfect) attendance. The Zoom Tech. Approach will continue to be implemented.  Since restaurants have closed because of the Coronavirus, it was decided the club would meet at Brew and Brats in a private meeting. Food will be available on a take-out basis after the meeting. This change will start next week. As school is now closed, there was concern expressed for the schoolchildren, and their families in terms of receiving regular meals. A committee is being formed to address this potential need in the village.  We will talk to Matt about this. He will, no doubt, give us some direction as to how Naples Rotary can best help. We are looking to fill the position of Treasurer. In the event that someone to fill this role cannot be found, Bo would be willing to take on this responsibility, (at no cost to the club). Karl, from Hollerhorn, is still willing to host special events, in the future, provided that at least 30 people would be willing to eat dinner. As Matt is going to be out of the country near the end of June, the Gavel Dinner will be held on June 22^nd. Brew and Brats will be the location, and Jane will cater the dinner.

As mentioned earlier, today’s program, “The Power of Imagination”, was provided by Bruce M. We went online, and tried the Zoom technique for the first time. Bruce gave his presentation from his home, while John and Tom handled the technical issues from the meeting site at The Redwood. We had two members, Blanche and Brenda, who attended on-line, and who were able to give us (written) feedback afterwards. Bruce’s great-grandmother, whom he credits for giving him inspiration, encouraged him to use both his intellect and imagination throughout his life. “The stars we are given, the constellations we make”, was the quote Bruce used as springboard for his talk. Not only using our intellect, but focusing on our imagination, as well, can take us to many heights. Bruce gave an interesting summary of the history of videoconferencing, beginning in 1910! We’ve come a long way! Bruce also referred to an author, Victor Frankl, who felt joy, even though he had experienced a concentration camp during WWII. Steve R. added, also, that there is another book, written over 2000 years ago, from which can derive much joy and encouragement… The Bible! Since the schoolkids could not be here to read their Dental Health Stories, we thank Bruce for stepping up to the plate in providing such an interesting program. It’s also exciting to see new technology giving us better ways to stay “connected”!

The Fine Time turned into a Happy Time today, as the contributions were all for positive reasons! So many of us who were able to enjoy the NCS Play over the weekend were delighted to witness such an extraordinary performance! The kids did an outstanding job! We liked Bruce’s program, and we’re excited to move forward technologically. In spite of the way things are right now, we were all glad to be here, and we’re grateful for our Naples Club!

Kaiden was asked to draw today’s winning ticket, which turned out to be Skip’s, #889! The kitty was at $150. Skip drew the Queen of Hearts. The Win-Win referred back to the program. In what year did the first videoconference take place? The answer: 1910. Steve R. had the Rotary Moment ready for us. Some time ago, he and Billy were in Louisville, Kentucky. They happened to meet up with a former Naples Rotarian, the late Jim Arsenault, who was a Medical Researcher.

Though times are trying right now, we will do continue to do our best to stay positive and keep connected. Here is a hopeful thought. Skip passed out Lucky Ducky Derby Tickets for us to sell! Hopefully, this event will still take place, and that things will be better by then. Remember, next week’s meeting will be at Brew and Brats. It is an Evening Meeting. Hope to see you then!
