Stories
President Phil called to order his last regular meeting.

He mentioned the Food and Wine Festival cheque presentation to the Ami Sinclair Melanoma Trust took place last Friday at the Riverina BMW showroom.  The recipients had no idea of the amount of the cheque   and were "pretty well gobsmacked" when they saw the amount ($60,000).  The photo (at right) was in the paper and there were quite a few members from the club.  The Melanoma Trust gave Wollundry a big thank you.

On Thursday eve there was a joint board meeting with a number of decisions and motions recorded.
  • The first motion was regarding water problems at the North Wagga Shed.  It was moved that $900 be spend to repair the problem.
  • There was a recommendation to the board that another member be added to the Risk Management Committee.  The role would be as defined by district as a Club Protection Officer.
  • There was also a motion that the Sunday Markets can move to the new refurbished Gas works site. and that a expression of interest could be lodged with the WWCC.  This was not a committment to move the markets, rather a "first in" expression of interest to the WWCC.
  • The board also approved the 100% attendance awards for the ChangeOver Dinner.
  • The Food and Wine Festival Committee will be chaired by Tim Barter and Michael Merrylees.  Phil thanked both fellows for putting their hands up and Kevin will still be around to assist.
Phil went on to mention Ray King's article in the Rotary DownUnder Magazine regarding the Royce Abbey Oration. Ray pointed out that there have only been 4 orations and one of them was presented by former Wollundry Rotarian Graeme Finney.

Phil put up a slide of the Wagga Wagga Cycle Club upcoming event this Saturday and Sunday.  He had received a phone call requesting assistance.  They were especially in need of someone acting as Commisere for the road race on Saturday.  The job will involve driving or riding in a car in front  or in back of the racers and assist in with orderly and safe running of the race.  Anyone interested in helping either Saturday or Sunday, please see Phil.

Phil noted that this was his last meeting as President and he thanked all of the members for their support over the year.  He said that it has been “absolutely wonderful.” He wished incoming President John Ferguson every success in the coming year.  He encouraged all members to attend the Change Over if possible.

The door prize was won by Paul Milde.

Sergeant Session

Richard Braid was the Sergeant. He started by fining John Daly as a member of the Banking Community.  He then made an impassioned request for a Sunday Market swap on the 22nd of June.  So, volunteering might be a good way of avoiding a fine!
He fined anyone who left Wagga on the recent long weekend and bought anything outside of Wagga.
He fined all Rugby Union followers who watched Australia beat France.
Also, all those who failed to stay up Sunday Night to watch our own Daniel Ricardo win the Canadian Grand Prix.
Cross Fines: John Hawkins enquired about whether members need a Politically Correct Course for the Sunday Markets and he also cross-fined Craig Bromley regarding a busker at the markets.

Thirty Seconders
Col Mercer brought up the subject of adjusting the starting time and finish time for the Sunday Markets in the winter months of June, July and August. After considerable discussion it was agreed starting July 1st (the new Rotary year) the OIC should arrive at 7am and the rest of the team will arrive at 7:30 and the markets would finish at noon as normal.  This would be a trial programme. Phil thanked Col for all of his work at the Sunday Markets.

David Benn gave a brief over view of his time as a volunteer at the  Rotary International Convention in Sydney.  He was at the Rotary’s Cricket booth and he also mentioned a number of specific groups who were represented such as the Golfers, Men Shed. He also met Michael Graves who is President of the International Fellowship Flyers.  When he found that David was from Wagga he was visibly shaken and spoke about the tragic loss of Peter and Helen Walsh.

Paul Murray, Doug Conkey and Peter Crozier gave a report on the 2014 Rotary International Convention held in Sydney at the Olympic Park.  Over 18,000 Rotarians from all over the world attended with entertainment provided by Australian groups The Ten Tenors, Human Nature and Marina Prior.  If a Sydney Convention video does not appear...click here to see the video.

Paul reported that Wollundry members
David Benn, Doug Conkey, Peter Crozier, John Egan, George Thomas and himself attended the convention in various capacities.  Some as registered members and others as representatives of Rotary organizations in the House of Friendship.  Paul was very positively impressed with the convention, especially with the opening and closing sessions.  He was particularly pleased with the breakout session dealing with “Making Rotary Fun”.  He notes that Wollundry was already using many of the suggestions that come out of the session, specifically the strong use of a video projector and member’s photos.

Doug Conkey was less complimentary of the Sydney convention having been at the Bangkok convention.  He thought that the opening and closing sessions were outstanding, however, one criticism he had was that the House of Friendship  was restricted to Rotarians.  He made the point that it would have been better to open it up to non-Rotarians to use the opportunity to promote Rotary.  He also felt that an opportunity had been lost by only providing fast food in the House of Friendship and not including the wide variety of ethnic and local foods and wines Australia has.  John Egan pointed out that Rotary could not allow alcohol to be served at the convention.

Peter Crozier was also reporting on the Conference and thought it was a great event. He commented on the excellent variety of Rotary stalls that were included in the House of Friendship, especially the Rotary Singles Stalls which he said he would provide details to any of the members if they were interested. He also picked up a number of "Proud Rotarian" bumper stickers which he said he would make available to any members after the meeting.

Paul stated that Wollundry was one of the best represented clubs in the district and the total number from district 9700 was approximately 60 to 70.

A photo album of the convention is available  above under the Photo Albums heading or by clicking here.  It includes photos of the District 9700 Diner Cruise and Vivid light show, Opening session, Closing session and a variety of Rotary stalls.  The last photo is of our exchange student Nelson who happened to run into Paul and Carolyn Murray.
