Young Ugandan Activist Speaks Out About Climate Change in

Rotary Projects Around the GlobeNovember

Rotary’s relationship with the Global Partnership for Education is already having an impact, as incoming district governors learned at the International Assembly in January.

The 30-minute program, “Delivering on our Promise of a Polio-Free World,” provided encouraging information about the progress and remaining challenges in the fight to end polio.

Mayor Greg Conkey Speaks to Fellow Wollundry Rotarians
Mayor Greg Conkey addressed his fellow members on Tuesday providing an overview of his 9 years as a city councilor and 5 years as Mayor.  He is not running for re-election and has three and a half weeks remaining in his regular term as Mayor, however he will remain in the position as acting Mayor until the first city council meeting in January when a new mayor is installed.

Greg spoke about the progress that has been achieved over the recent history and the specific commercial , industrial and private developments that have begun.  The majority of his talk related to the significant work with the Bomen strategic industrial zone or Special Activation Precinct (SAP).

Greg specifically identified the amount of financial investment that various projects were outlaying and and in response to a question regarding the sum total of the combined developments, he indicated that the amount was in the range of  hundreds of millions to over a billion dollars.
Concept drawing of the Riverina Intermodal Terminal and industrial zoning
SAP Concept Concept visualisation of rail hub and potential industrial lots.
This significant investment will accelerate the expansion of the Bomen industrial area and will feature:
  • Over 1000 hectares of heavy industrial zoned greenfield land — up to 15+ hectare lots
  • Land costs 1/10th of an equivalent block in Western Sydney
  • Direct Inland Rail interface managed by Visy Logistics
  • Established industry operating in area — Teys Australia, Riverina Oils & Bio Energy, Enirgi, Southern Oils, Livestock Marketing Centre, Proway and more
Greg received quite a few questions ranging from the relationship between the number of homes built in Wagga and the population to Wagga becoming the Cycle City, to the future growth in the length of freight trains passing through Wagga.  Overall Gregs talk was an excelent overview of the state of the city from a retiring mayor who was unanimously recognised by the members as having done an exceptional job as Mayor of Wagga Wagga.

Secretary's Report 09.11.21
Hi all,

Over 40 members on the floor today, good to see. I think it is time to phase ZOOM out and all attend meetings physically when possible.

Michael Knight cleverly turned the Members Choice session on it's head and reverted to the old Sergeant at Arms format. John Gray, Neil Pinto, Greg Conkey and others were on the receiving end of his dry humour. Thank you also to Michael for organising the Cup sweeps last Tuesday.
Peter Mackinnon and Mark Hillis have the Christmas party under control. To be held at the Hillis residence on the afternoon and evening of 12th Dec 2021.
The event will be catered for by Lime Leaf Caterers. There will be mini Gears and Beers ride on electric bikes, during the afternoon, electric bikes supplied by Mark. Please advise Peter Mackinnon by next Tuesday 16th whether you will be attending or not.

Greg Conkey, as guest speaker talked about the highlights of his time as Mayor of Wagga Wagga City Council, his love for the job and realisation that the time has come to move on. Congratulations to Greg for the successes during his tenure.

Well done to John Egan and James Hamilton for following through on the trailer insurance issue with District. Our trailers will be insured under the District Insurance mechanism given that it has been accepted that they are of a value less than $10,000 each.

Market again this weekend, weather permitting. Matt Crouch from Rotaract has advised of a keen team to follow up on the BBQ. Once again under the supervision of Michael Knight.
Thank you to James Hamilton for today detailing the Public Liability Insurance responsibilities of Market Vendors, and our responsibility as a Club to ensure that Vendors have Public Liability Insurance coverage while operating within our Markets.

Our Meeting Nov 9th 2021

Sergeants Session or Members Choice

Michael Knight  used his Members Choice to bring back the old but not forgotten Sergeant session.

He started by fining John Egan for collecting money before Michael had the opportunity to name the victims.

He then fined our speaker Mayor Conkey for not clearly distinguishing the capital investments which are going to the RIFL rail project from those government funds going to the Wagga gun club that has been so frequently in the news.

Michael proceeded to fine Neil Pinto for not appropriately wearing the supporting colours and banners for the Indian cricket team.

He then fined John Gray for his photo which appeared in the paper resembling an old area farmer.

Wollundry Members Back at Work for RAWCS
Ken Engsmyr from the Rotary Club of Parkes was a visiting Rotarian at our club on Tuesday.  Ken was meeting with Stuart Heriot, Tim Hutchings and Paul Murray to re-establish the working team co-ordinating a second round of distribution of funds to farmers and rural communities impacted by the past drought.

Several years ago, Ken and the above three Wollundry members distributed one million dollars to farmers through a RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) program funded by the Federal government.  Another round of funding has been made avaliable and the team has been asked to come together again and contact some 400 farmers and facilitate the distribution of debit cards in the amount of $500 per farmer.  The funding is intended to support western rural communities still under financial stress from the drought/Covid19 impacts.

Presidents Report 9 , Nov 2021
It was great to see a full house today with the easing of Covid restrictions finally. There was a lot of camaraderie evident.
Greg Conkey gave a fascinating insight to the costs of council, and how the hub at Bomen has progressed. Potholes rated a passing comment only! It was illuminating how much money the council spends in a year to keep everything going and expanding. Greg is retiring as Mayor so we all wish him a happy retirement.
Our Xmas party is on the afternoon of December the 12th so keep the date please.

Michael rebooted the sergeant's session; just like old times.

There is a board meeting this coming Monday, so will have some things to discuss likely from that meeting.

It seems that the staging of our two major events are on track at this time; fingers crossed.

Have a good week and see you at our next meeting 16th November.
