Just before the meeting started PP Phil and Tim Barter officially launched the Wollundry Cycle Challenge website. Phil was a bit miffed that Neil Pinto had already signed up and secured number one entry.
President John opened the meeting and welcomed visitors Arthur Penton (Guest of Doug Conkey) , Rob Nicholson, Greg Goldspink (guest of Rob Fuller), Jo Carlisle (guest of Tim Barter) , club guest speaker Kerry Penton and Rotary Exchange Student Franzi Trebel.
He appeared with nicely tanned scalp after a break in Darwin.
Jim Gibson reported only 29 of 73 members had so far paid their membership dues. In the words of Gough Whitlam "It's Time" to pay up fellows. Next weeks meeting is a vocational visit to Ken Taylors establishment in Fitzhardinge Street. Burmo was welcomed back from the 39th Parallel and so was Wal Paton.
Some discussion about the editors table revealed that the web link for working with kids check is not functioning. It is a simple task fellows. go to this link by Googling "working with children check nsw" which takes you to http://wwccheck.ccyp.nsw.gov.au/applicants/application
Fill out all the required information and under purpose for check click on the button for volunteer. in the child-related sector drop box select :"Clubs or other bodies providing services to Children". Then when all filled in click next/continue and you are taken to the next page called Consent. confirm you have read and agree to the declarations. complete the anti-spamming Captcha text and submit. You will get back an email with a reference number that you will then have to print out and take to the Motor Registry so that your identity can be confirmed. Then await another email that can be nice and quick or may take several weeks. Remember to check your spam in the inbox periodically if you haven't got it back. Once you have the approval print and give or email it to Nick Leywood asap.
Peter Crozier delivered the third RAWCS instalment of Rotary information.
Michael Merrylees presented the Sunday Market report.
Col Mercer reminded us that this Sunday 31st August is the last operating on the Winter timetable.
The Spring Fair market will be held on 21st September.
Franzi reported on her week: she attended a talk with Chrissy on Cambodia which some of us might have seen on the TV news, she has been loaned out for a while to another family while the Hillis's are doing good works and enjoying a trip to Cambodia. She saw a Rugby Union game somewhere and had a lazy Sunday. This Afternoon her school sport is to be LaserTag which she was looking forward to.
Her German word of the week is for "Fun" - Spaß - How it is pronounced is somewhat dependent on what the little german squiggly thing is at the end of Spa.
Sergeant Peter Clucas proceeding to fine everybody by several means including those who didn't miss his winter absence, those who didn't know the current Snow Depth at Falls Creek, Those who hadn't donated blood recently and those who were not active skiers. He concluded by reporting that the ski season had been a good one and proposed a Club excursion next year to Falls Creek.
PP Phil advised that the next meeting of the Beers and Gears (Wollundry Cycle Challenge and Beer and Cider Festival) Committee will be Wednesday night at 5.30 at the Commercial Club.
Lucky Door Prize
Guest Speaker Kerry Penton drew Jim Gibson's number 29 from the pan after member 57 Robert Pearson missed his chance by being absent.
Notable event of the week;
This Icon of Wagga for over 100 years disappeared this week.
Our guest speaker today was Kerry Penton, Director of Riverina Institute of TAFE who was introduced by Wayne Jenkins.
Kerry has been the Director now for four years.
TAFE NSW is the biggest training organization in the southern hemisphere.
The Riverina Campus delivers training courses to some 28-30,000 students across Australia.
Enrolments this year are up 350 on last year..
TAFE NSW is the largest public provider of training but its income is 35% sourced from the commercial sector.
There were 19 campuses in the Riverina Institute before the current restructure.
Everything has been reviewed within the organisation including the 560 programmes being delivered.
Some low demand programmes have gone.
Growth areas are in Health and Civil Engineering.
The Institute is following the "Smart and Skilled" new funding model of the NSW state Government.
Smart and Skilled includes A student entitlement for entry level qualifications up to Certificate III, changes to how fees are set, new student loans for higher qualifications and a priority skills programme based on labour market analysis and industry consultation.
Riverina Institute has identified six Signature programmes that are being developed in:
Early childhood education and care
Organic and agro-ecology
Geographic spatial information services
Water operations
Sustainable Forestry
Emergency Management.
Two other programmes are being developed in
Wine and Food and
Health and Wellness.
Kerry then went on to answer questions from the floor:
Peter Crozier asked about defence links. Kerry advised TAFE now subcontracting some services to BAE Systems at Forest Hill and are negotiating a training package somewhere in NE Victoria.
Gerry Gerlach asked about flexible and online delivery of courses. She responded that campus wide video conferencing was well used and 25% of training is being delivered in the workplace rather than on campuses.
Col Duff asked about apprenticeships. Kerry advised they were falling though 28 courses are still being run in the region. A new funding model involves a flat fee of $2000 for a 3 year apprenticeship paid in installments by the employer. Some angst ensued about mobility of apprentices and Kerry advised that pro rata refunds should be available but the mechanism was still being worked out. Not all rules are clearly defined yet.
Graham Burmeister asked about training in Prisons. Kerry advised that the institute is training provider for GEO at Junee, they are resigning to provide at Mannus and Riverina Juvenile Justice establishments.
Kerry was thanked for her informative presentation by member John Hawkins who owned up to working for Kerry and being a teacher at Junee.
This morning I had confirmed that some guest speakers from Destiny Rescue will be coming to Wagga to provide information to our clubs, about what they do and how we can potentially assist.
Destiny Rescue is dedicated to rescuing children from human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
We help rescue the sexually exploited and enslaved, restore the abused, protect the vulnerable, empower the poor and are a voice for children that can’t speak up for themselves. We provide kids rescued from sexual exploitation a safe, loving home to grow up in, medical care, counselling, schooling, vocational training and all daily needs required to be integrated back into society successfully.
We also help protect vulnerable children from being trafficked. We offer them financial assistance, a good education, vocational training, and, in some instances, a place to live.
The meeting will take place next Tuesday night in lieu of Murrumbidgee Rotary meeting. I would like to invite all Rotarians and friends to attend if they wish – Child Slavery is a terrible problem and one that needs to be addressed – If we can find ways to assist and even one child is saved from this life directly through our actions then we have something to be thankful for. Please advise your members of this meeting, please feel free to invite whoever you believe would be interested in attending:
Murrumbidgee Rotary meeting
Meet at 6:15 – meeting to commence at 6:30
Tuesday night 2nd September

The Sunday Market Report was presented by OIC Michael Merrylees. Team was Greg O'Hare, John Hawkins, Peter Crozier and Tim Barter. One absentee. A beautiful mild day with a great (small) team. Stall holders enquiring about a proposed site change and new $90 site fee. Seems to be an active rumour mill at work.
Bin full but to be emptied. New Receipt book needed.
The National Vector Bourne Control Programme distributed over 46000 long lasting insecticide mosquito nets in 2012 as part of the campaign to maintain high population coverage. During the first six months in 2013, 11000 bed nets had been distributed in the Solomon Islands
91% of all households surveyed owned at least one net with more than 81.5% owning more than one. The transmission of Malaria has been significantly reduced through the nets and Indoor Residual Spraying of 37000 households. The annual incidence of confirmed malaria cases has now decreased markedly to under 47 cases per 1000 population. The nets are also being distributed in Timor Leste and Port Moresby where over 3 million nets are being used.
Rotary is involved both in the distribution and financing of the project.
