The meeting started with a firm strike on the bell by PP Phil!
PPAndy Irvine, finally back in Australia led Rotary Grace. That evoked a nasty comment most uncalled for about singing practice, but that will be solved tonight.
Pres John welcomed our guest, Rob Nicholson.
Next week we have the budget brought down, and we learned that John Gray, David Benn and John Flynn are off to Nottingham to play an Australian vs England Test in the Fellowship series. Could be interesting!!
Pres John also outlined the areas that the Rotary Foundation was preferring. They are Peace and Conflict Studies, Health and Disease Control, Water and Sanitation, Prenatal and Maternal Health, Literacy and Education, and Economic Development.
All Grants have to fall under this broad umbrella.
Please take note that we have to pass all requests through the Board. Don't make promises we can't keep!
John also informed us that Evan Robertson had tendered his resignation due to work committments. This was accepted by the Board with regret, but Evan is assured he is welcome to return when he feels able to. A big thanks for his involvement and efforts over the past few years.
DID YOU KNOW? Based on an extrapolated calculation from a number of clubs reporting their voluntary time contribution, if our time was valued at $20/h, D9700 would have contributed more than $2 million in in-kind to Rotary activities.
Greg Conkey spoke to us today on three interesting developments that are happening in our city.
The first is the Freight Rail Hub being developed at Bowmen
When completed this hub will be one of the most efficient at moving freight in Australia, needing only four shunts to put a train on the track to port.
It will require a huge amount of work, and the 5km of line that are being developed will easily hold full trains without the need to break them up.Greg told us that one freight train is the equivalent of 150 road trucks, and the use of trains is the most efficient means of moving freight. It will be a Federal, State and Local Government project . We have been promised $44m so far.
Next, the Levees. These are going ahead and are going to protect the CBD for a 100 yr flood. At the moment they are 60 yr rated, but when completed this 100 yr level will make insurance companies much happier.
It will cost about $19m and the plan does include North Wagga. There will likely be a rate variation to fund the government shortfall of about $7m.
And finally the gasworks. There has been some 14000 tonnes moved from this site to Cootamundra, where it is being detoxed. It is a $14m project, blown out by a failure to do the work needed back in the 70s.
It has been slated for finish for finish in October, and then we may be ready to move the markets.
In summary Greg was scathing in his remarks concerning the way that the successive State and Federal governments have cut back on the funding available to Council.
The only solution is to reduce the wages bill, and cut services.
Paul Milde, in his role as Secretary, announced member commitments and Rosters.

It has been an extremely busy time for Shelterbox of late. Conflict in the Middle East, Central Africa and Eastern Europe, combined with natural disasters in Latin America and the Balkans have seen ShelterBox responding to ever more complex situations. Increasingly, the Operations Department is working with partners such as ACTED and Oxfam and needing to respond in a more flexible manner other than sending only ShelterBoxes. In Syria for instance, unbranded tents, blankets and water purification are a priority. Historically, ShelterBoxes have always been packed to suit needs, but as our recent experience in the Philippines has shown, often it's 'tents only' that are needed or perhaps home repair or "Shelter Kits". Part of our response to the Philippines Typhoon included sending solar lights, kitchen sets and toollkits. The need to adapt our aid to suit beneficiary requirement is increasingly apparent and, most importantly, to only send aid that is needed.
This 'non box' aid is funded by donations to the 'ShelterBox Solution', a general relief fund that isn't linked to sponsored boxes. Of course there will always be a need for full ShelterBoxes, so from now on,unless specified otherwise, only donations over $200 will go towards sponsoring boxes. Those donors will be still be issued with a box number and certificate, and will be able to track where their box has been deployed. Donations under that amount will automatically go into the 'ShelterBox Solution'. Not only will this allow us to respond with the flexibility required, but also it will also cut down on our administration costs. We hope you will understand the need for this change, which is designed to make better use of your money.
This month's quote comes from John F Kennedy.” Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.
Thanks for your wonderful support this past financial year. Remember, all donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible ...... all year round!
Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries.
James Ross managed to extract a large wad of cash with a Heads'nTails Sporting quiz. The questions were sneaky. Now most of us thought we knew that Andy Murray was Scottish. After today we are certain!A good job, very enjoyable. Geoff Breust was the last man standing. .
