Our guest speaker today was Aaron Oldaker who was introduced by Paul Milde. Aaron is an advertising person with Southern Cross Austereo in Wagga and he acknowledged Geoff Breust's inviation to speak to us.
He was formerly a newspaper journalist and a media advisor in public affairs with the Australian Army who served in Afghanistan.
Aaron's talk today was on the subject of change in communication methods with particular emphasis on global conflicts. He spoke about the "old" media methods of Newspaper Radio and TV vs the "new" social media of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. 65% of Australians now are active in Social media.
His job in Afghanistan was to monitor insurgents media output which was in English. He explained that it is important for them to influence western populations and quoted General Dwight Eisenhower "Fundamentally, Public opinion wins wars".
He focused on two current conflicts. The ISIS insurgents in Iraq and the Gaza/Israel conflict. ISIS seeks to strike Fear, seek Funding and Recruit Followers using a combination of old and new medias. He said the Israel Defense Force had better use of Social Media than Hamas but still more young Americans than older Americans think Israel is not justified in its reactions to Hamas action.
Aaron was enthusiastically thanked for an extremely enlightening presentation.
Past President Phil opened the meeting and welcomed visiting Rotarians Father Bill Bryce from Cootamundra, Richard Sleeman from South Wagga, club guest speaker Aaron Oldaker and Rotary Exchange Student Franzi Trebel.
He advised that president John was enjoying the heat of Darwin.
Franzi reported on her week at School including a Movie with friends on Friday. She celebrated her Birthday on Sunday. Also during the week she had some RYE training with three other exchange students in Wagga. She visited Canberra and went to Parliament House, the War Memorial and met the Cambodian Ambassador.
German word of the week:
Franzi’s German word this week is for “Birthday” – "Geburtstag" made up of geburt (birth) and Tag (day).
The Club spontaneously then sang Happy Birthday to Franzi.
Peter Crozier then presented part two of his RAWCS information. There are currently over 400 projects listed on RAWCS website www.rawcs.org.au. PP Phil reminded us that ATECH in Wagga is looking for help with a project for Honiara Hospital.
Paul Milde delivered his Secretary's report and noted John Grays anniversary by saying John had done everything in the Club to which John replied he had never inducted a female member.
Sergeant James Ross fined John Egan for misspelling "Shuter" in a previous Bulletin.
He raised the issue of 17 absentees reported AWOL last week and put them on notice. Rick Priest objected to the naming saying he was in attendance.
The editor can only respond that he reports what is entered on the two attendance lists he gets. It is the member's individual responsibility to ensure his attendance of apology is recorded.
John Gray + John Flynn + David Benn were fined for some issues regarding Navigation, a visit to a bar called Hooters and a uniform of shoes and socks being the same colour. All this occurred at Trent Bridge during the last day of India vs England Test Cricket. DB responded that what happens on tour should have stayed on Tour.
A new acronym has appeared in the Wollundry lexicon - Beers and Gears.
The next meeting of the Beers and Gears (Wollundry Cycle Challenge and Beer and Cider Festival) Committee will be tonight at 5.30 at the Commercial Club. The web site is up and almost running at www.wollundrycyclechallenge.org.au
Melbourne Cup Trophy Tour Event at Apex Park Lake Albert on 6th September. Michael Merrilees advised members that a few members had got together and will cook BBQ breakfast with proceeds to the Club at this event from 9am.

Continuing on from last week, we move into a branch of RAWCS that used to be called FAIM, Fourth Avenue In Motion. Our Club has participated in a number of these projects over the years in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
Teams of around 6 to 8 persons who need not be Rotarian members but generally are go overseas to assist in ongoing projects for about 2 weeks often involving building and construction, water and sanitation and general maintenance.
Volunteers can be both men and women and the project is headed up by generally a skilled person who oversees the project. There are currently over 400 projects which can be accessed on the rawcs.com.au website. It is high time that our Club considered selecting and supporting a project most likely in the Asian or Pacific region. Great camaraderie is developed by participating as a volunteer in one of these projects.
Wollundry Cycle Challenge
PP Phil spoke on the Wollundry Cycle Challenge and showed us the new interim website. He thanked those committee members for their hard work so far.
