President John brought his first meeting to order with a full house, several guests and a few minutes late. He delayed the start to allow for the arrival of Commandant Stephen Jobson.
He started the meeting complimenting the meal we had at the Change-over and the new chef! John then proceeded to inform the members that Jean Simpson, wife of PDG Ian Simpson has passed away after a long bout with cancer.
John reported that the new Committee Structure will be sent out and if your name is not on it, please contact John for an assignment.
President John then presented PP Phil with a DVD that actually had all the bulletins for his year in it. At the Changeover, Phil was presented with a blank DVD.
John noted that June is Rotary Fellowship Month. David Benn had informed him that the International Cricketing Fellowship will be in Wagga in October of 2016. John noted a few of the many fellowships within Rotary, such as amateur radio, golfing, doll lovers, chess and aviators, such as our own Luftwagga.
President John's first meeting was well run, well timed and to top it off, he won the bottle of wine.
Colonel Stephen Jobson was introduced by Graham Burmeister.
The Colonel started his talk about a personal connection with Rotary since his father was a long time Rotarian, with a PHF, and having travelled on a FAIM trip. He feels that he and his wife Tanya and four children have been warmly welcomed to Wagga Wagga. He admitted to being inexperienced in talking about himself.
He is a bit different from the usual Commandant of Kapooka. He is the 33rd Commandant and the first with an aviation background. He is a Blackhawk helicopter pilot. He had had a number of different roles in his career, starting with experience in the Northern Territory leading a group of Aboriginal soldiers. He also spent a year as an Aide to Governor General William Dean, whom he has great respect for. The majority of his career has been centred on piloting Black Hawk helicopters in Australia and the United States.
Previous to his posting in Wagga Wagga, like most Western Sydney kids, he imagined “Wagga to be some freaky sports development zone.” He saw Wagga as a “vast land of sports ovals”.
In America he served with the 82nd Airborne Division which has a distinguished history. He recalled his first morning at 05:30 exercising with 14,000 identically dressed soldiers in drab grey and black and one Australian wearing bright gold and green. He got much jeering and laughing and paratroopers whistling at him and asking him if he “was in the Band?” The next morning, he wore the drab grey and black.
He was in the United States at the time of the 911 bombings and he spoke extensively about the impact the attack had on America. He also spent time in Afghanistan, but noted "that was another story". He was stationed in Pakistan during the earthquake relief effort.
In summary, he said that he has many stories that he could relate, but he is looking forward to his years in Wagga and to have much contact with service organisations such as Rotary.

Comments:
Foggy start to the day, cold and damp. Several new stall holders did not know that they needed to register with the OIC and set up wherever they liked. Well attended by stall holders and public and it looked good with the new large jumping castle.
Laurie fined Ken Taylor who very quickly glossed over the fact he was late for the OIC Sunday Markets job. He also made Ken collect the money.
He fined Rob Fuller for a mobile phone violation. He planned to fine consistent late comer John Ireland, but because President John started the meeting late, John Ireland was on time so to be fair, he fined both Johns.
He fined Col Mercer for his award and receiving a phone call on his mobile. He fined Geoff Breust for his letter to the editor. He fined all the Waratah Rugby Followers of which there was one … David Pike.
Laurie concluded his fine session with some nice memories of his mate Dick Smith.
PP Phil came to the rostrum and asked Col Mercer to come to the podium. Phil presented Col with “Clubman of the Year” for his service to the Sunday Markets Committee. Phil said that Col approached the running of the Sunday Markets the same way he ran the Coop in town … customer service focused. Col commented that he was very humbled by this award but also included the Committee members in the award.
