Stories
Neil Pinto introduced John Rook, Captain of Wagga Wagga rescue squad.

History of the squad - oldest land rescue squad in Australia. It has 18 members and has been involved in a variety of rescue situations over time.

A very sobering set of pictures and stories were given, with many instances of car accidents but also flood rescues and helping people trapped in other circumstances.

When asked what are their most important pieces of equipment he replied: “Jaws of life, cutters & spreaders and Hands and eyes!”

Squad has their own chaplain & counselors to deal with their own traumas. They are obviously put in situations where they can be affected themselves by what they see and the squad very carefully backs up their people afterwards.

They do basic first aid first if paramedics not yet there, even CPR. Once paramedics arrive they take over first aid duties. Police control the scene but stay at the perimeter and secure the scene while the Rescue Squad does their work.

He told how newer cars are actually easier to extract victims from.

They get all their funds from fund-raising & donations, not from Government, although the Government pays liability insurance, while NRMA pays other insurances.

They cover from Tumut to Tarcuta to Coolamon, Mangoplah and half way to Junee or even Narandera, but will go further if required.

Members gave thanks for their efforts for the community.
President John opened the meeting with Rotary Grace and the toast to the Queen and People of Australia, then asked for a moments silence to remember the victims of the MH17 tragedy.

Kevin Roben is off to vietnam and text books are requested for delivery to various education facilities. Text books only, please, not novels. Please contact Kevin regarding this if you can assist.

Peter Crozier gave a Rotary info about child slavery and rotary's efforts to fight this. The figures given were very sobering and thought provoking.

Nic Leighwood spoke regarding child protection compliance. We all need to be registered and an email has been issued regarding this. Note that the new procedures take over from previous registrations so we must ALL be re-registered under the new process.

You will note during the process on-line that there is a cost, but when you go through the process it will be zero (for volunteers).  Note that it takes only a few minutes; you require your driver’s licence or other identifying document and you will need to finalize it afterwards by attending RTA in person.

Phil McIntosh gave an update re cycle event; he wants another meeting for organizing same. Event is likely to be Sunday 6 October.  Wagga city council is going to assist by preparing the traffic management report gratis. Many thanks to WWCC!

No sargeants session today.
Paul Milde, in his role as Secretary, announced member commitments and Rosters.
