Graham Barrow was our speaker today, and his topic was Urban Salinity. Graham was introduced to this problem very early in his career - he undertook a project as a 15yo schoolboy, working on salinity in the Canning River in Perth.
Urban Salinity involves a rising watertable, approaching the surface and carrying salt, which has disastrous results for buildings and infrastructure. Wagga Wagga has been identified as a site where this occurs, and the area around the showground, Calvary Hospital and the CSU South Campus are areas of special interest. The area of the Lloyd subdivision, and high ground across to Kapooka is considered to be a recharge area, where water seeping into the ground causes the water table to rise. A committee investigating Salinity had studies done for the Lloyd area, and used CSIRO models to determine the best practices to allow development, and since that study, there have been nine pages of conditions apply to all developments in the area. The restrictions require 80% of the surface area of a development to be impervious, so you don't get much garden area, and unit development - blocks of flats are best suited to these restrictions.
The work done by Graham and his colleagues included drilling boreholes, taking soil samples and testing the soil. The results have contradicted the earlier work, and indicate that the high ground, subject of the study is not a recharge area. As developers need to sell the blocks of land, they are keen to have some resolution.

George Thomas provided Rotary Information this week, and provided a homily on the role of Rotary in the life of the well balanced man around Wagga Wagga. We were informed of the purpose that the meetings in Chicago that evolved into Rotary were to serve - companionship and education, and to have a good time!!!! Because Rotary is about having a good time, there are higher priorities, like Family and your Job. George extolled the message that having a good time in Rotary needed a team approach, and a team needed a purpose, like community involvement and focus.

Incoming Exchange Student-Franziska Treber
Our Youth Director, Darren Wallace provided an update on our incoming exchange student, Franziska Treber.
Franziska is from the village of Kirrweiler in the west of Germany near the city of Landau. She is an excellent student who plays the clarinet and is also learning the guitar.
Darren has asked for a further three members to volunteer as host families. Host families are compensated by the club with a $100 allowance each week, with the student is given $50 a week to help off set living costs.
Thanks to Mark and Christine Hillis for volunteering as a host family.
Social Calendar
Social Director, Mark Hillis again will be organising two social weekends for members and partners.
He will shortly forward to members a flyer regarding the Talbingo weekend get away.
The Sailing Weekend on Sydney Harbour will be held in September.
CSU Scholarships.
Neil Pinto reported that the selection process for scholarships at CSU has been completed, with the panel of John Ireland, Graham Burmeister and Neil shortlisting five of the original 12 applicants, and finally selecting a winner to receive $2000 for three years, and two "book prize" winners, each worth $500. We are awaiting confirmation that our successful recipient has not won any other scholarship prizes, before proceeding to make the award.
Food and Wine wrap:
David Hodge is finalizing the accounts of the Food and Wine Festival, as Doug Conkey pursues a golf ball in Vietnam. David called for all invoices requiring payment, or all dockets needing reimbursement, to be submitted to him so that a final tally of the project can be calculated.
Kevin Roben was away, so Tim Barter reported on the proceedings as we unwind from the Food and Wine Festival. There have been messages of congratulations from club and community, and suggestions for further enhancements for next year. A debrief meeting will be held at the the completion of this Rotary Meeting, and serious analysis of food issues will follow at an appropriate venue very soon.
The General Manager of the Wagga Wagga City Council has approached President Phil for photos of the activity during the Food and Wine festival. These photos were taken by Greg Conkey, so the council were going to get them anyway, but its reassuring to think that our function draws the biggest crowd to the venue.

President Phil opened the meeting, and invited James Hamilton to lead the singing of our Rotary Grace. Then we drank a toast to the Royal Family, and the Australian People, and took our seats. There were no responses when Visiting Rotarians were called to introduce themselves, but we did have two visitors along as member's guests, and they were Rob Heriot, the guest of James Ross, and Jamie Sayer, keeping an eye on her better half - and that's Mark.
It was announced that a meeting of club members interested or committed to the development of a cycling event in Wagga Wagga, and run by Wollundry Rotary, would be held at the Commercial Club at 5.30 that evening.
Phillip advised the members that Kevin Roben's sister Karen had died in the days before the Food and Wine Festival. Karen lived in Yackandandah, and had recently been in a photograph of a choir, featured on the front page of the Border Mail. He expressed the club's condolences to Kevin.
It was also noted that our recent member, Simon Musgrave's daughter, Courtney, had died, at just 18yo.
