As this is Christmas, we followed the tradition of asking someone to give us a Christmas message. Usually these are quite good. Todays wasn't. It was excellent.
Pastor John Guilfoyle of the Living Water Church spoke for about 20 minutes on what Christmas really means to everyone when the inside and the outside coincide. He spoke of the fear and hatred that we are now facing, the darkness that is around the world, and how the message of Christmas is bringing light to that darkness. It was an entertaining, enthralling talk which had his audience spell bound. So how does a Zoo, a Gorilla and a Lion fit in to Christmas? You had to be there!!
|
|
But as Pastor John said, happiness and peace come when the inside reality coincides with the outward view. The birth of Christ brought the promise of something new. Sometimes we don't recognise that there can be something different. Like a fish who takes the water for granted, but doesn't actually bother to look at the water, we accept life as "that's how it is". Christmas gives us time to pause and think again.
PP Andy Irvine thanked John in the usual manner, but pointed out that the Christmas bonbon which we had at the table also had a religious origin. The hats were symbolic of the Crown of Thorns, the toy inside said that life is a Gift, and the jokes were to tell us not to take life too seriously. Good one Andy!!

President John had a very busy time today. This was our Christmas Lunch, and a large number of visitors arrived. Firstly there was Matilda Balding and her Mum and Dad, Rob and Dimity. Then we saw Margaret Priest, Jackie Taylor, Kay Thomas, Renae Elington, Dell Blowes, Carolyn Murray, Angela Metcalf, Maria Egan, Sandra Legge, Judy Ferguson, Maureen Jenkins, Cassandra Nicholson and Helen Paton. Add to that John Guilfoyle, and the exchange students Franzi and Lu-wei Spinks and you have a pretty full house.

John also had the great honour to recognise George Thomas as a sapphire pin holder of the Paul Harris Fellow. George is leaving the club to follow other things, but he will still be in town and wants to stay in touch.
John also mentioned a thankyou from the "Ignite" group who spoke to us a little time ago."Ignite" is a mentoring programme for young people who are in need and is a very worthwhile organisation. Finishing off, President John told us about the coming Australia Day Market on January 25th, 2015.
Bruce Spinks very generously donated three prizes for an impromptu raffle. The proceeds of $146 went to Australian Rotary Health.
The winners were Sandra Legge, Andy Irvine and Paul Murray. Much appreciated, Bruce. The money will be used to help fund research into Mental Health. Many many thanks!

National Youth Science Forum 2015
|
District 9700 was allocated 12 positions. 25 applicants applied. Matilda Balding won one of the positions in the District to the NYSF. She will be Wollundry Rotary’s representative along with Samuel Bannister.
The NYSF is the only program in Australia that offers students at the end of Year 11 the chance to test-drive potential careers in the sciences.
Wollundry has been a great supporter of this programme and this year is no exception.
More than 430 students from around Australia will be selected by Rotary Districts to attend the January Sessions in 2015 for 12 days of immersion in real-world science.
Matilda attends TRAC and is starting Year12.
Some notes from Matilda’s application:
- I have a particular interest in the science field and in the future I wish to have a career in medicine.
- Matilda has attended: The Rotary Science Challenge 2012, The Conoco Phillips Science Experience at RMIT University in Melbourne 2014, Sydney University Workshop 2012 involving a nationwide exam in which she received a top 10% result.
- Matilda represents her school as an SRC representative of her year and she is a Youth Blood Bank Ambassador for the Red Cross Blood Service. She has also help at Kurrajong Waratah Race Days, she works with the special needs class at Kooringal Primary School and fortnightly volunteers in The Hospital Auxiliary Opportunity Shop as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award.
- Matilda has received her Bronze and Sliver Duke of Edinburgh Awards and is currently working towards her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. This involves a trip to the Solomon Islands to volunteer and teach in remote villages. As well as this trip, 12 months of physical activity, skill development and volunteering are required to achieve the Gold award.
We thank Matilda for being such a wonderful representative for Wollundry Rotary Club at the NYSF and we wish her well at the forum.

Sunday Market
This morning Michael Knight led a strong team. Kerry Pascoe, Tim McGillicuddy, John Flynn, John Hawkins and David Benn did a stirling job. Tim had to retire early, so President John padded up. The market was way smaller than last week, and Col Mercer was seen spreading Christmas cheer ( I think)
The results were Gate $460, Stall $260, Trestles $28, Insurance $75. There was an Advance Booking refund of $128 for a total of $685.00 (That's a lot of Raffle tickets. Just ask the boys from Kooringal )
