History of Past Club Projects

Mary Stark gave us an excellent, concise history on the club's projects since it was chartered in 1977, laying forth the many different projects over the years in each of these 3 areas of service – International Service, Community Service and Youth Service.

For International Service we constructed a Rotary Centennial Garden at VanDusen Gardens, -Healing Little Hearts to provide life saving heart operations on infants in India, -Voices of Nature, a program to teach children to recycle in Mexico and Mamnoli Village in India where we provided clean drinking water, sewers, toilets, solar electricity, education and employment to a small village.  We are currently working on cleaning up plastic from beaches in El Salvador.  The photo shows us packing to send a container of medical supplies and equipment to Cebu, Philippines.

Our Youth Projects have included a Summer Social Skills camp with the Learning Disabilities Association of BC and Sleep with the Whales where children with life threatening illness and their families spend a night at the Vancouver Aquarium.  We have provided a software program for schools to help children with learning difficulties learn English and Math. We are currently working on Bursaries for 8 students from local schools.

Community Projects have included a Shoreline Clean up,  two carts at VanDusen for visitors with difficulty walking and low vision eye equipment at VGH & UBC Hospitals.  We are currently working on a school library for the Ahousaht Community by Tofino, providing books, computers and shelving.

Have an idea for a good project for our club?

We are currently looking for both Youth and Community Service.  Please give any ideas to our Project’s Director who will check if we have the funding to support it.

Insight of the Week

The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small fire makes a small amount of heat.
