Bulletin Dec 16/16
Our speaker this week, Laurisse Noel, of Vancouver, is currently attending as a Masters Candidate in the Gender and Peace Keeping Programme at the University for Peace in Costa Rica. This University, chartered by the United Nations in 1980, is attended by students from over 40 nations including some from conflict zones. She has found the contacts made with her fellow students most enlightening.
Since high school and beyond her aspirations have been in
Helping Better our world,
Learning the most effective and efficient ways to serve others.
Placing herself in a position to make a difference,
Creating a global network and learning sustainable practice
Working with likeminded individuals in sharing knowledge and opportunities
Maintaining a link with the United Nations.
Fostering the importance of Education
In the course of these endeavours she has embarked in programmes dealing with making life safer for women and learning how to deal with crime, not just by incarceration but also by using the technique of Truth, Justice and Reparation. This allows suitable candidates and their victims, willing to confront and therefore gain some understanding of each other, to lead to the criminal,s promise to obey the law, and to agree to give Reparation to the victims and the community. It has been shown the recidivism rate is lower than in cases of incarceration.
Her aims are to attain her Master’s degree, a UN internship. a Global Grant and eventually a Ph.D
She enchanted us by offering boxes of chocolate to accompany her talk and thanked us for giving our time to listen to her.
