From Manchester to Vancouver via Lethbridge
We had an entertaining talk by Raymond Greenwood, aka Mr. Fireworks, at our meeting, which he introduced wearing flashing green spectacles. He described his early childhood in a working-class district of Manchester, UK, where he went to school with the full intention of becoming a Salesman.  He mentioned his Grandfather sold coal by horse and cart. (Your writer remembers  the salesmen selling coal in the winter and ice blocks in the summer, before the availability of refrigerators.)  Raymond, on leaving school, became first a salesman for a  well known company, Cow and Gate, that made a dried milk product for babies ,  followed by selling Timex watches,  very inexpensive but reliable watches. When his visiting War Bride Aunt from Canada persuaded him to emigrate to Canada, he did so with alacrity.  After the second world war,, she had landed in Halifax staggered by the cold in the middle of winter, and taken the train to tiny Raymond, Alberta. However she had soon persuaded her husband to move to Lethbridge and that is where Raymond settled.  He soon moved to Vancouver and worked his way up at Pitney Bowes.  That did not stop him from joining many civic endeavours.  He became involved in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, re-started the Sea Festival through the Ways and Means project, as well as working at the Fireworks for the Calgary Stampede for several years. He was also was involved in setting up the Vancouver Festival of Light in 1990.
Mr Fireworks has a shop selling fireworks, LED party favours of all sorts, lighted shoelaces and clothing and has a booth at the Ghost train in Stanley Park.  He sets up events, ranging from weddings, parties, charitable functions to auctions. He is currently volunteering as President of the Canadian Club of Vancouver, Council Member of the West Side Seniors Club of Vancouver, Director of Membership Services for Probus Club of Vancouver,  Citizens Community Advisory Board Member at  the Vancouver Fire Department,  Tourism Vancouver,  Volunteer, Bard on the Beach, plus other organizations too numerous to mention.
